We now have two new cards this expansion that include the new langue "Cast this when drawn," Spider Ambush! and Scroll of Wonder. While there have been cards with similar effect in the past, Ambush!, Ancient Curse and Burrowing Mine, none of them has the "Cast this when drawn" language and, notably, all three prior cards cost 0, whereas these new ones cost 4 and 5 respectively.
My question is, does the auto-cast when drawn spend the mana cost? That would be a pretty huge drawback... And if the only point of giving them a non-zero cost is to trigger new cards like Grand Archivist, Arcane Tyrant and Spiteful Summoner, it would seem kind of inconsistent to not have to pay to cast the spell, yet still to be able to trigger these cards with it. And why were the old ones all zero if it did not matter?
it does not trigger mage quest, or auctioneer, it works the same way as Roll the Bones this pretty much cast itself, and doesn't count as casted by player
I think the mana cost is for if you get a copy of the card through some means, such as Mimic Pod. I don't believe it would spend the mana or else both cards at completely unplayable.

Huh. I am intrigued to know whether (if yuo got two from Mimic Pod) they would both trigger, giving you two minions and cards.
My gut assumption is that it would? That would be kinda fun - especially if it drew you yet another one! heh!
I posted this in the other thread, but it's so darn quick moving. Mike Donais already answered this. It doesn't take mana to cast when it casts itself. It might not be consistent with how the spells cost 0 before, but now that spell cost matter, it seems they are adding a cost so it activates cards where costs matter. Although it probably won't activate Arcane Tyrant since that card needs YOU to cast a spell, not for the spell to cast itself
Ok. I see there was a clarification for Ambush that it spends 0, does not trigger any spell effects. Cost is for thoughtsteal, etc. So it seems it would work with Grand Archivist and Spiteful Summoner, but not Arcane Tyrant
In the case of mimic pod or thought steal, I'm pretty sure you'll end up with one (or two) in hand, that you can cast using it's mana cost. Since mimic pod doesn't draw the card, just puts it in hand. I'm not totally sure about this, but I think if you mimic pod one of the older ones like ambush, what happens is you end up with a zero cost spell that does nothing when played in your hand. That's why the wording on these cards is important. Since drawing it just makes it cast itself, rather then giving it some effect, it means if you end up with one in hand, you can in fact cast it for it's effect.

Since mimic pod does not "draw" both, I'm guessing the drawn one would activate and the other would go into your hand as a copy, playable for 4 mana

That's true. Though I imagine that since you still draw a card from the first one, it would chain on (if another spider, etc)
does anyone know if it lets you cast the spell manually.
since it doesn't say " cast it with random targets" the way i understand it is when you draw the spell, it lets you target your enemy if its not aoe(flamestrike) like a fireball to the face?
I'm going to guess since that scenario is going to be rare (casting it manually) they left out the "random targets" part to leave room on the card. Since you can draw cards when it's not your turn, it's going to have to be random targets.

Hard to tell for sure (unless it's been reported anywhere in a rules post). Since the wording states "Cast a random spell", I suppose we could make the logical leap that it is either only non-targetting spells, (unlikely) or that the targets are also random.
From a practicality point of view, the spell is cast upon drawing it from the deck, so there is no state where you can target - and it could potentially break the game if it was a "target minion" spell and no target available, so you couldn't ever cast it (and the game gets stuck or something).
(This is obviously speculation, but going from a logical perspective)

Thoughts?

You can try Roll the Bones with Violet Teacher or auctioneer to test it yourself
It doesn't cost mana to cast when drawn. I guess the 4 mana matters in certain cases, such as Thoughtsteal
Fuck cubelock

they added cost to such spells for synergy with new cards like Grand Archivist and Spiteful Summoner
I can see it now. You mulligan Scroll of Wonder only to get TWO of them back in your hand! lol

Casting doesn't take up the mana. We've seen this before with Beneath the Grounds.
It has a mana cost in case pulled via Thoughtsteal. And generally tokens created by a card cost the same mana as the card itself.
yeah, you're probably right, guess that means there's a chance we get to fireball our own minions. oh goody.
