This topic surprises me because I didn't realize so many people saved up gold to buy packs. It is a pretty big time investment, but playing Arena is a surefire way to get a lot of packs while maintaining your gold level (assuming you can get enough wins).
A question for people in the thread: Do you dislike Arena that much? Is Arena a poor investment of your time / gold (I.e. not able to get enough wins for it to be 'profitable')? Would you rather just only play constructed?

I played mostly Arena for KFT, until I packed my fifth Legendary, but I don't plan on doing the same next season. Maybe I'll alternate, I don't know. Arena is fun, but after so many games, I grow tired of not being able to create a working synergy through all my deck. It's tempo-top deck-stone, always and always.... I like to play special cards and make them work in constructed, even if it means finishing at rank 10. When I grow tired of Ranked play, I go back to Arena. Also, the best time to play Ranked are the first 2 weeks after expansion release, and by playing Arena to gather your packs, you miss the most delightful Hearthstone there is

Because that's when people are trying things and there is no meta yet, at least, no strong decks that you can't beat by using your own decks. In KFT, the most used decks in the first week were a Demonlock (and a vomit-inducing version of Jade Druid), Razakus wasn't a thing yet. You would see crazy decks all the way up to Legend. If you wait for 40-or-so Arena runs to get a playable collection for constructed, the meta is already settling and decks get similar already.
usually one week after a new expansion comes out i start saving gold for the next one. kotft being the exception, because i got so unlucky with golden cards (no legendarys) i had to farm the pity timer (which for golden legendarys is somewhere around 220-260 if anyone wants to know
Wrong. There is no "golden legendary pity timer". I've been playing since GvG, opened MANY HUNDREDS of packs, never gotten a single golden legendary.
You do know the pity timers are set specific (and haven't been around since beta)?
Cool. I've probably opened 250+ packs for every single expansion since GvG.
What's your comeback to that, lol??
Could you link to a confirmation of that golden legendary pity timer?
As far as I know, there isn't any confirmation of what the pity timer for golden legendaries might be, as the number is so high (IIRC, the highest interval between golden legendaries for which there is video proof is well over 300 packs) that it would require a few hundred thousand recorded pack openings to have a reasonable confidence in what the actual number might be. However, 400 seems like a nice round number, and it happens to be 10x the regular legendary pity timer - it likely isn't too far off, in any event.
Counting to have around 6000gold (depends of how good quests i get) when next exp hit. Im just playing like 3-4 classes. So 50-60 packs + dust is for the most part enough for me.
I see alot of people answered the post saying they started saving gold at the start of the expansion, personally i didnt start playing right at the start of beta but i did start abit before Naxxramas was released(rip never should have desenchanted it). I also didnt really care too much about the game so i dont have as much dust as i should, the main reason i managed to save so much for koft was because i didnt really like un'goro and saved from the start but koft seemed pretty fun and balanced for most classes so i was ok with keep buying packs for those sweet legendaries. Tho Blood Queen lanathel isn't that good without the discard quest.

Yes, yes, and yes.
OK! Sorry to hear about it. It's such an alien viewpoint for me, because I really enjoy Arena and have turned it into 'infinite' gold. It is a pretty big time sink though.

A far simpler explanation is that there isn't one. There is no indisputable evidence that there is one. Not sure why people insist that there must be one specific to goldens just because there is one for regular legendaries. What exactly would the point of a pity timer that is extremely rarely (if ever) met be anyway??

Different way of playing.
I don't have the time to hone my arena drafting and playing skills to the point of infinite gold, and like playing constructed. If my plan was to play arena runs to win packs then it would take me a long time to build a nice collection for the new expansion, while if I hoard gold I can buy a nice set all at once on day 1.
I usually start savin Gold one day after an expansion hits to have around 11000 Gold for the next one + pre order 50 packs and I have everything needed.
Will start saving the moment I FINALLY hit the pity timer of KFT it's trolling me and I am gonna get it exactly at the 40th pack

It was time to start saving gold last month.
Started saving the week after KOTFT was relesed.

Indeed
I always start saving atleast a month before the next expansion to get atleast 30 packs with gold when it drops (usually more)
At the very least you should have 2k gold already.
Garrosh did nothing wrong.
Since we get a expansion every 4 months, the first 2 months i use my gold and buy packs and second two months i save for next expansion.
