I have 6500 or so gold saved. As a F2P, my strategy is to complete all my daily quests, but as many packs as I can afford on day 1 of the new expansion, then immediately start saving. I also dust anything golden with the exception of a legendary that I want to play and anything that rotates into wild.
YMMV, but I feel that buying all your packs up front gives you the most time to enjoy them in the new expansion.
This means it is smart to start saving up for thr next expansion as soon as Day1 is past.
When a new expansion comes out, craft everything legendary you want in golden. Then buy packs for all your gold. Then craft what else you need. Then start saving up for next expansion before going to bed on the very first day.
usually one week after a new expansion comes out i start saving gold for the next one. kotft being the exception, because i got so unlucky with golden cards (no legendarys) i had to farm the pity timer (which for golden legendarys is somewhere around 220-260 if anyone wants to know)

Wrong. There is no "golden legendary pity timer". I've been playing since GvG, opened MANY HUNDREDS of packs, never gotten a single golden legendary.
My goal is 11k of arcane dust and 6,5k of gold without promo, that usually starts just before new expansion. I'm playing solo Mage in Wild and wanna get golden cards for it. Now i have 9.2k of dust and 2,2k of gold. And yes, its time for saving fore weeks already

You do know the pity timers are set specific (and haven't been around since beta)?
I started saving up on October 3rd and I am averaging 100g per day, thus I expect to be past the 6k mark at the time of release. I have only 800 liquid dust and 1k dust in less liquid dust (goldens for which I own both bon-goldens). I guess i am below average here but i like the gambling part of the pack opening
I decided to start saving for Knights of the Frozen Throne packs when the expansion was announced, but I admit I haven't been playing as long as others and needed cards from other sets. It worked out for me, but if my collection were fuller I would definitely have considered saving sooner.
If you have time, and you're good enough. Arena IS the best place to use gold as F2P. I usually buy 10-20 packs (can't hold the hype) and then spend the rest on arena since I will get more value (you just have to win 3 or more matches...).

Cool. I've probably opened 250+ packs for every single expansion since GvG.

But then you have no time to get that expansion, unless you also buy it when the previous expansion is released. When do you buy the first expansion?
You are right; It does require one ‘sacrifice’ where you either give up on a set or simply pay for it with money. I was lucky and started this during Naxx which meant there was plenty of time to save up for Goblins vs. Gnomes.
But still even better is playing Arena if you are not terrible and if you can wait with all the fun new cards. I like them on day1 but if you have patience then Arena is way more economical.

What's your comeback to that, lol??
Could you link to a confirmation of that golden legendary pity timer?
It really depends on how long you've been playing f2p. If you've been around since release you've probably stockpiled quite a bit of dust as well and are able to craft to complete decks. If you started in 2017 you have much tougher choices of completing meta decks now or next expansion, best to focus on 1 or 2 classes in that boat. Older players have the luxury of saving sooner since they have the resources to craft missing cards.
Myself I start saving within 2 weeks of a new release, just broke 8k and should get to 10-12k by release maybe more if I play lots of arena between now and then.
It really depends on your personal situation, that said 7-8k gold is a good target as a casual f2p player. This can be attained by ensuring dailies are completed and winning 3-6matches a day. 70-80 packs on release will average 3-4 legendaries (given the average) and most common and rares of the new set which will provide a good base for any meta.
I have 5k gold now, I have been saving almost since KotFT release and I should have about 7k gold for the expansion+ the preorder this time.. It is a good time to start saving if you have not already..

Even smarter is playing Arena though.
But i just cant dust my golden penguin flipper :c
Garrosh did nothing wrong.

now?
lol , I have already been saving for weeks now.

still at the same 40k dusts that from classic but no gold left too hooked to arena!
i have started saving gold right after KotFT release too.
Currently i have 5,5k gold and 10k dust.
We still have ~1 month for the next expansion.
It's nice to be IMPORTANT,
But it's more important to be NICE!

Yes I am saving up but I am worried about this next expansion. Rumor has it- it will bring back the F2P-crowd with very heavy emphasis on aggro.
Makes sense given how prevalent control has been since the jade mechanic. Also, all the death knights were control-focused.
