it's pretty irrelevant, but people with card backs predating goblins vs gnomes are at a higher chance of knowing what they're doing then someone with a card back that came out last month, and this is a game of stats and chance after all.
i think you should take every game seriously no matter what card back your opponent is playing though, even if it might seem like they're a total noob, and as far as mulligans go you should always mulligan for your own win condition and try to make the opponent have the answers
Thats true, even legend card back doesnt matter, because he could be legend on first season and being a totally noob in the current season.
I often make the mistake of assuming that those with the legend cardback have some class. When some of them add me to rant at either a loss or what I'm playing I tend to learn I'm wrong.
I often use the TESPA card back, which hopefully makes people think I'm a US player playing on the EU tin. Not the case though.
Otherwise, I tend to try and match card backs to my hero rather than the deck. Morgl gets the TinyFin Beach, Arthas gets FrostMourne and so on.
I DO like the idea of dicking about with the OOB card back to see if that changes how people play against me.
Thanks for your responses everyone. I was curious to see if anyone else had thought about it the way I do, and also if decks with tribes/high card synergy are more likely to have a thematic card back attached. Obviously this doesn't apply to the vast majority of players because they either don't care about customising the card back on a per deck basis, or go with the most recent month/basic card back/legend etc. The post about golden Warriors with legend card back having a high change of being Pirate Warrior is so true haha especially if it's in casual.
Only card back I've noticed being a giveaway is when Warriors are using the default card back they are always Pirate. Not directly about the card back, but if I see a Warrior with Magni as the hero it is Quest or some kind of control deck. Other than that I haven't noticed anything that I could say I actually use during decision making for mulligans.
I've noticed that some players give away their deck archetype based off of the card back they choose. This wouldn't matter much during the game (or in arena), except the mulligan is important. For example, I've played against quite a lot of Rogue and Warrior players that go with the Pirate card back. You can expect in most cases for those players to be running pirates. Queue into a Druid with the Jade card back. Could it be aggro or ramp? Definitely jade. If my opponent has a Christmas card back, Valentine's Day card back, or the Rainbow or Cupcake card back, they're probably going to emote the most and play a troll deck. The legend card back is interesting, as it can be super frustrating for a new/F2P player who queues into someone using it at Rank 20. Do you think the card back choice matters? Should players care that they let their opponent know what they're going to be before playing a single card?
In this game even if you could see the hand of your opponent at all time it still wouldn't matter as much as the RNG element .
Try sniping a streamer and you'll see that you still lose a lot of time even with perfect plays because of bad luck .
So to answer your question the fapt that your opponent might guess your deck based on your cardback is almost irrelevant for gameplay .
Dude, really? Where was he salty in that post? Did he curse or insult someone or even sound even remotely angry?
Man, this link has been thrown around so much you people don't even know how to properly paste it anymore.
Seemed pretty salty to me too. He's basically saying "blame it on the rain" (Look it up if you don't know), and it essentially means he'll never be a good player because he blames losses on RNG, instead of understanding how to better control the outcomes.

Not being good =/= being salty
True, he said this game didn't require any skill (wasn't the first to do it, and won't be the last), but salt would demand anger or some bitterness at least. (go to the Salt Thread yourself and you'll see what kind of posts you can find there)

IDK why, but i never switched card back from default. I even dont know how to do it and it has no point for me to switching card back. I never watch on my oponent card back. I only notice when oponent have golden hero.
I request all cardbacks to be nerfed immediately so they always match the deck your opponent plays before you mulligan cards. That way it would be much easier to choose your prefered removals and a better game for everybody, right?
That aside, there is definitely some psychology behind card backs. A legendary or jubilee cardback might intimidate your opponent. However, from a gaming-psychological perspective, it would be better to give as little information on your experience, playstyle or general behaviour as possible. Solution -> play the basic card back or maybe the current expansion cardback, everything else is information.
Pandaria (aka season 1 card back) is by far the worst card back to see in an opponent. It means they were here since the beginning of hearthstone and know their shit. It's WAY more scary than the Legend one. When I see an opponent with a Pandaria card back and a golden alternate hero to spice it up, I know my anus will suffer.
I also noticed that Legend card back players are significantly more likely to BM, which contradicts the popular idea that it is bad players who BM. They may see it as a tactic, but at the end of the day that still makes them dicks.

Yeah, jokes aside, I'm with you on that part.
In my games in previous metas I also saw a slight trend of having a specific card back based on your deck. My memories don't extend that much in the distant past, but I recall seeing jade druids mostly having the jade lotus card back (or the legendary one). Back in MSoG I think, that mages, priests and some warlocks, who played Reno style decks, also changed their card back regarding the Kabal family. Point is - I also saw how my opponents "leaked" a bit of information in the mulligan stage and although that's not an objective regularity, but a personal preference, small details like this can be helpful sometimes.

Dr7 its back!
I used to get nervous whenever I queued into a legend player.
Then I got legend a few times myself, and I realised all it meant was that they understood the basics of the game.
Fuck cubelock

Everywhere else: Workin on it.. (0/9)
I had forgotten about cardbacks.
By your title I thought you were going to point out how silly it is to care about card backs.

I dont know which cardback I use cause I never really cared....
I used to play control warrior with the pirate card back just in case I run into somebody like OP :)
Personally, I never even look at my opponent's card back during mulligans and after that it doesn't really matter.
