So, post nerf, I queue up my (fortunately unnerfed) Hunter deck, and of course my first opponent is a priest. And, of course, I lose in a completely one sided match. He counters everything I play perfectly: potion of madness, shadow word horror, shadow word death, obsidian statue. There is no end to the tools at the priest's disposal. And finally he plays n'zoth, and finally I concede.
What decks counter priest that aren't totally unaffordable? I've already dropped a fair amount of money on the game and I wasn't blessed with great legends. The best death knight I have is Guldan, but warlock is still not very strong. What can one play and still be competitive in the New Priest Order without breaking the bank?
Well that depends on your collection and what do you consider unaffordable. Most decks require a lot of dust right now (R.I.P. 1600 dust aggro shaman).
Jade druid is still favored even after the nerfs and it's one of the cheapest meta decks.
Quest Mage is favored but not as cheap as Jade Druid.
Midrange DK Hunter I guess is not favored? Not sure about that one.
Secret mages are quite good against priests as counterspells completely shut off big board clears.
You can consider playing a cheaper version of the following deck: with bonemares and maybe medivh to replace the archmage package (bully, conjurer, antonidas).
Oh yeah and I am currently sitting at rank 3 all thanks to that "Rank 1 Legend Asmodais mid range hunter deck" on hearthpwn front page right now. That deck counters priests as long as you choose mulligans correctly. You should mulligan for 3 mana 4/3 can't be targetted.

Secret Mage is pretty good yes. I crafted Tony so use the Tony package, haven't tried the Bonemare version.
Does well against Priest, Warlock and Rogue. Loses usually to aggro and gets roflstomped by evolve shaman. It does ok against Jade Druid if you counterspell nourish or get a free UI from Mana Bind.
Timing of when to aim all your burn and minion damage at the face and ignore minions is the most important part of playing the deck. Usually if you are about to lose the board or are in a race (e.g. shadowreaper Anduin gets played) it's time to go all face.
Priest HAS all the tools to perfectly answer you as hunter, but the thing is, he's not meant to always have all of them.
Your most affordable tool is average luck really.
If the priest perfectly countered every single move you made then you're really just not meant to win that game.
+1 for this.
Beating the current priest decks right now is 50% or more just luck of the draw ... theirs and yours. Without their god combo's and removal for everything, they got nothing a little aggro can't fix.
Problem is, like you experienced, more often than not, they will counter damn near everything you throw at them, so your luck is just as important. Best you can do is try to play as many 4 attack minions as possible (play smaller minions as a combo with Razormaw if you can), and hope you can get in their face before they hit their combo.

Just wrecked a priest on my US arena account with the arcane giant build of the secret mage (2 babbly books, 2 counterspell, 2 mirror entity, 2 arcane giants plus the usual crowd). Very cheap to build (2 epics required: primordial glyphs, +Karazahn for the giants of course).
Thanks, but I tried this deck and I'm finding that it's just awful against priest. I'm 1-4 against them, and that's each loss was a slaughter. Hunter just doesn't have the answers even with the 4/3.

Depends on what priest decks you face the most. Secret mage is probably pretty good as others have said, and with nerfs to pirate warrior and murloc pally it's a little better now. If you face lots of big priest, I would recommend running double polymorph, that can completely shut them down. If you face more razakus then a traditional list with either antonidas or pyroblast for a finisher. Play counterspell into aoe turns and hope he can't trigger it with a PoM or PW:S first though
Mid-range hunter even without DK is one of the worst match-ups for priest, yes they technically have answers for everything but they only have one of each of those cards to answer you (Ofc in Razakus). If you are having such a problem with priests then, you are the problem, not the deck or the class you're playing, beating a priest with hunter is as easy as playing curvestone and you can finish the game before they find their dragonfire potions or evenget the chance to go into Shadowreaper form.

Yeah, since Hunters never have bad draws and are always able to just play everything on curve ... and its almost guaranteed a priest will never have Dragonfire in their hand on turn 5.

Midrange hunter is strong against priest, you just had some bad luck I reckon. Run two Bearsharks, try to buff minions to 4 attack whenever possible and go face.

A cheap mid-curved tempo-mage deck build with counterspell will do. I did a F2P recently and comfortably beat a lot of priests with that.
Full fledged secret mage is probably better though. But at least you can do it with relatively cheap mage decks.
