Rank 20 (Zero Stars) to Rank 5 (Zero Stars) are 60 Stars. If you don't count winstreaks and an average of 4-5 mins per game with an average winrate of 60% you need around 100 games and 400-500 mins to reach rank 5 on average. Winstreaks and a higher winrate will decrease the number of games needed.
Rank 5 to Legend are another 25 stars. These matches tend to be harder, since you don't have the winstreak buff there and you can face legend rank players. Only 2% of all hearthstone players reach rank 5 or better, so the opponents are much better players than in the lower ranks.
The last time I reached legend, it took me around 100 games – bouncing back and forth between rank 2 and rank 4 until I reached legend with a 6 games winning streak.
Usually, I am reaching rank 8 (from 20-17) in no time. Then the grind happens. Half of my opponents with legendary card packs, no one really makes obvious mistakes, so it takes me a lot of time to reach 5 rank. Yesterday I played more than 1 hour and gained only 4 stars in rank 6.
No information about Rank 5 to Legend, because I never bothered.
I play about 3 hours of ranked play per week due to a mix of heavy schedule and mix of arena and tavern brawls. I typically reach rank 5 most months with a few days to go. I've never reached legend before time runs out.
I also tend to play controlly decks and rope many turns, so my average game is longer than most.
My estimate is 8 to 12 hours to get to 5. Obviously really good players could do it even faster.

I'm looking for some way to estimate the average amount of time someone needs to play to reach rank 5, legend rank, etc.
theres bound to be a correlation, thats why they call it the grind my man
I'm pretty sure some regular legend players have recorded their averages on hearthpwn.
Id say anywhere between 3 to 6 hrs none stop for rank 5 for me
Ive only ever reached legend twice and it took ages lol
hypothetically:
