I wish I could say something else, since I've been playing for a long time now, but in the end I decided to quit because I just can't keep up with new packs anymore. Yes, you can totally compete without spending money, thanks to the crafting system. I got a nice deck that works very well right now. Thing is - it gets boring. Really quickly.
I saw a thread complaining about people not playing the new cards. Know why I don't? Because I don't have them. I just can't afford dropping hundreds of dollars every few months, just to be able to try out some new stuff. Would I like to? Sure, why not? The game is fun when you're actually able to brew and make your own decks. But as it stands now I could barely get enough dust to create a single deck, and that's it.
I don't know how you guys do it, but I can't keep doing this. It's boring me to death. Which is a shame since I love deckbuilding more than actually playing.
I saved 13,000+ gold from UNG to KFT. This game is totally possible to be F2P in (even though I am not). In life, you can either spend money on something to get it quick or time to get it slowly, but you can't do neither.
What is a "lot"? I bought the preorder for KFT, One Night in Karazhan, and the Welcome Bundle: that's about $75 total, which is just a little more than a $60 "triple-A" game. My income is shoddy at best, but I reasoned that spending money on a game I play every day or every-other-day was a worthwhile investment.
You can get away without spending any money on Hearthstone, and I did as such for a long while. However, one day I came to the aforementioned conclusion that there's nothing inherently wrong or evil about spending money on this game, and proceeded forward from there.
It costs at minimum $7 for a movie ticket where I live. That $7 for two hours of entertainment; for a game I play multiple times a week, $75 is nothing. I'll get my 20-ish hours of value in two weeks tops, and past that it's just gravy.
Behold, foolish interlopers! I am commanding this mortal to spread the will of the Scourge throughout the interwebs, encouraging you to seek out me, Archlich Kel'Thuzad! Now coming to you as the tenth class of Hearthstone!
I am a finalist in this Class Creation Competition, so if you could give it a look I would be greatly appreciative <3
Now that you're able to farm quests with friends (which helps you earn gold quicker since you don't have to worry about losing twenty times for every win with a , never have to worry about duplicate legendaries, and are more or less guaranteed one now once in every 20 packs, it's easier than ever to incrementally build up a decent collection over time. Just always dust your extra cards - never 'hoard' them, since more cards sooner is always better than betting on the Nerf Fairy for a dust windfall - especially now since the only way you'll ever get a duplicate legendary now is when you *have* all of them already for a particular expansion.
And I know this because after scoring Auctionmaster Beardo in my post-patch ten Ungoro packs during "The Great Glitch," I looted another Mage quest. So duplicate legendaries are still possible - you just have to have all of them first. >.>
I took a break from HS, and started saving gold from zero when they announced the expansion. Still I was busy some days and let quests stack, so I missed a few. The result for me was 3,000 gold, meaning I had 36 packs and the free DK legendary. With that, I am more than able to make one or two top tier decks.
My friend hoards gold like a dragon, expansion to expansion, and he had 130+ packs as a F2P. I'd say the mismanagement is on your end, and if this is still not enough, consider supporting the game with real money through the pre-order. Otherwise, I hear solitaire is great, and that will only run you one time fee of a pack of playing cards.
Get good at Arena. You'll fill out your collection from rewards and learn the game much better. Do daily quests to pay entry fee and before long you can sustain fairly easily.
Play some arena then. Not only does it give you superior value versus buying packs, it also improves your skills in trading, drafting, when to unload your hand, when not to, etc..
Save ALL of your gold between expansions which should net you easily 10K+. If you really want the cards you should be dusting gold cards as well. I myself could care less what a card looks like i just want the cards. That in itself will net you a couple hundred gold just on initial packs which should easily allow you to round out a couple decks on Rares and a legendary or two. DO NOT PLAY ARENA. Playing arena is a complete waste of your gold unless you can get 8 wins every time. Even then the rewards from 8-12 wins are terrible and you would still be better off saving your gold.
I've spent maybe ten bucks on this game. And bought the Welcome Bundle.
I was able to buy 81 packs the day the expansion went live. With only Gold. Same thing last expansion. Just spent the time I could saving up gold. Took MONTHS. Sure it is slower, and probably still not reaping the benefits of spending real money, but I get the cards I need, or at least dust to make them.
So being f2p doesn't immediately count you out. You just need more time.

Agreed: until you can consistently win 7+ games in Arena, acquiring packs that way is strictly inferior to buying them straight-up. Granted you need to play Arena to get better at Arena, but by pragmatically assessing the question of "how do I acquire the most cards in the cheapest, more consistent way?", you'll find the answer starting out is not Arena.

The good thing about arena is you actually don't need cards to play. You won't feel like your collection is incomplete because your collection has no impact on your experience.
I totally agree with that. I always watch streamers having fun with new and innovative decks but when I gather courage and an idea to create an own deck I just realize that I don't have any resources because I don't spend on Hearthstone. Although I can but I don't want to spend all my dust on one joke deck
Spend as much a you spend on a new video game/ board game/ new blu ray/ or whatever other hobby you're into once in awhile and you'll be plenty set up. If you like the game, it's worth the investment. It's blizzard -- not going anywhere anytime soon.

4 wins Gets you the pack for 100 like normal by giving you a pack + ~50g. Plus the aforementioned experience of game mechanics. 5-6 wins and you're only paying 20g entrance but often get supplemental dust as a reward or sometimes bonus gold.
Besides, if you aren't happy with your decks in constructed, arena offers an exciting way to experience a plethora of cards and their interactions if you're clever.
I have a lot of fun creating a new account and trying to get legend with it. Different strokes for different folks. Also, contrary to what some have said in this thread, arena is profitable* at an average of 4+ wins.
* I consider arena to be profitable if you would end up with more packs/gold on average than you would playing ranked for the same amount of games and using all of your gold to buy packs.

Fortune favors the bold, friend.
For the record Arena currently is busted all to hell. The DK cards are stupidly OP in Arena and getting just 4 wins can prove a very difficult task. You will still make out better saving and buying straight packs simply for the dust you get the more packs you open.

Save up gold and stop buying random packs you people knew a new expansion was coming so don't complain now

I got Hunter DK for free and this is the most fun I've had on my f2p account. Idk what you are talking about

With that attitude, it wouldn't be fun if you did spend a bunch of money. I have a blast on my F2P accounts
Free to try and find a game, dealing cards for sorrow, cards for pain.

I've done the $50 preorder three times, and that's more than enough to have most everything you want.
