Emotes are a rorschach test. You tend to see the intent of the other person as what you would have intended had you done what they did. So a polite person could be saying "Thank you for playing with me, I enjoyed the game." While you are thinking "Thanks for being such a chump you f-ing looser." If you are seeing others as being full of anger and hostility, it is probably because you are feeling a lot of anger and hostility, not because they are feeling that way.
Is it possible they are also feeling like you are? Yep, but it is just as possible they aren't and are trying to be polite.
In most arenas of sportsmanship, it is considered polite to greet your opponent before competition, and then honor them with some statement or gesture after the competition. Thank you, is a pretty common way to express appreciation for the competition offered by your opponent.

I really only get annoyed when I emote "well played" and they give a "thank you". Don't know why, but for a solid 2 seconds I'm slightly tilted by it. Then I realize it's an emote and I move on with my life.
The levels of BM haven't really risen either from what I can tell, people have always been pretty emote happy.

Personally I emote most of the time I beat a PW and aggro druid. I don't spam. Just the occasional thanks. And if I have lethal on hand but top deck a lethal card, I emote 'wow' and kill them with it.
I just like the thought of maybe putting these guys on tilt.
I mean I use well played the second a mage finishes thier quest and continue to press that button as much as I can because I know i'm already dead so... yeah probably.
I think its only triggering for those on a bad loss or the short tempered. I personally enjoy the "amazing" for face slap moments of opponent misplays heck I even enjoy being on the receiving end of it when I'm about to let go of the mouse button I realize as I try to stop moving my finger that last mm exactly what I've just done wrong "amazing!"
The warrior and mage greetings are the worst. "Heh, Greetings" makes it seem like he's laughing at you. And "Hello" is too easy to abuse- like it can be used for hurry up or look how great that move was, so annoying.
Like I could care less about emotes and someone getting tilted by it should take a step out and get another hobby.
But I noticed there are some decks that use more emotes. And I am not even surprised about that. From what I experienced the more agressive the decks the more emotes.
Why I am not surprised? I think it is pretty obvious which kind of people are playing those decks.

I don't think deck type has much to do with it, since in my experience Control Priests are probably the worst offender. However I do think there's a correlation to ranks, because lower ranked players are especially bad about it; higher ranks people are just moving on with their lives and ready to get into the next game.

If you think an emote qualifies as "toxic," you need professional help.
I think it was Sottle that had it on his Twitter, but someone in the HS scene pointed out complaining about emote BM is adorable and then linked a video of a fighting game tournament. There were two dudes sitting next to each other in those crappy metal folding chairs, one of them makes some kind of crazy comeback, and then stands up and starts literally screaming at the losing player. Who just has to sit there and take it, because no one in the crowd is blinking an eye. Pretty sure those guys would kill for the closest thing to trash talk anyone could get during a game would be canned emotes.

Squelch to remove their ability to be toxic (more or less).
This. I squelch players as soon as the match starts. Then I imagine that the person on the other end is completely civilized and it's saying "Thanks" each and every action I do.
oh my god they emoted at you. How dare they. Let's go make a broad statement on the forum about toxic players because of that.
Is this your first video game? Do you know what actual toxic players are? I've had people message me in games telling me to kill myself. That is what toxic means. I'm jealous that this is what you consider toxic.
Yeah the emotes in this game aren't toxic. I've heard people tell me to kill myself, to kill family members, wishing that my grandmother got cancer, etc. I've had people I banned make new accounts to hound me again multiple times on certain forums and chat-rooms. This isn't toxic. Of course the latter example I had was extreme harassment, but yeah this is nothing. Even a 'go kill yourself', is tame to some of the stuff I've seen. And do you know what ticked that guy off, what I apparently had done. I said Charizard was the one of the Worst Starter pokemon. A harmless opinion about Pokemon. And this guy went through all that effort to insult me because of it. The internet is full of crazy people and angry people, you gotta get used to both. Doesn't make it right when they do this kind of stuff but it doesn't make it false that you need to learn how to deal with it.

So have I, but it actually just means the same thing to me honestly. You know that if Blizzard added an in-game chat that people would be saying the exact same thing. I've been flamed by teammates and opponents in both League and Overwatch, and I still consider the emote thing to be pretty rude. That's just me though.
Sometimes im in the mood to emote, so i just emote on great plays and things.. i find it funny and a nice way to interact, and i think its really amazing how triggered people are by anything.. i find if kind of to taunt opponents, but i dont think you can ever be offensive or even toxic while emoting..

You're saying that someone emoting to you is the same as someone telling you to kill yourself.
The other day I was playing The Ancient One Rogue in casual. Got matched against a Quest Rogue. I managed to get The Ancient One on turn 7. He freezes it with Glacial Shard twice, and wins the next turn. After the match, I get a request and he calls me an ass. Um, I'm sorry that I lost?

Yeah, a toast!
People make such silly threads. Why does it matter? Squelch and carry on. BM is only a thing for people who have weak minds and get distracted.
