Before the release of MSG I used to get rank 5 every month. Now the closest I get is Rank 9. I used to play Tempo Mage. Any reccomendations based on that play style?
Play pirate warrior. I mean don't because it's dull as bricks to play but if all you want is an increased winrate that'd be the go to "broken" deck for the current meta.
Can't tell you what you could do better as tempo mage having seen none of your games so this was genuinely the most helpful suggestion I could think of.

I see very few aggro tempo mages now. They are outclassed by the pirate nonsense. You will either need to join the pirates or heavily tech against them, such as reno lock/mage/priest.
Im laddering in wild since Standard release, its indeed the toughest season to climb this time, I was stuck between rank 6-10 for 2 weeks and only made it to rank 5 last 10 days of the season. Its the wide variety of the decks being played that makes it hard to climb.
Can I assume that Pirate Warrior decks get tougher above rank 5 or so? Only because they aren't half as terrifying at the lower levels here than seemingly made out to be - I'm guessing this is in part due to more misplays at this sort of level?
That's a legitimate question. (Not trolling) Sure, I've lost a couple against them but so far the one's I've come up against seem to crumble after you drop a few taunts and removals. I'm playing heavy Dragon Priest and Undying Shaman at the moment, so that might be partly why I do well against this deck perhaps.
Top two decks according to all the snapshots out there are still aggro shaman and pirate warrior above legend it goes to aggro shaman being clearly on top..
I find at level 5 and above that its all on the mulligan as well as having the right cards (im missing patches so pirate warrior is not to effective at higher levels for me.)
You were finding it easier because Tempo Mage was OP at the time, and easy to run up the ladder with, not because you were good. Just like the Aggro Warriors now, all excited because they're soaring well above their actual level.
Play aggro shaman, went from rank 5 to 2 today playing that.
Main reason I started playing aggro shaman is because I got tired of the cancer that is renolock, so I wanted something that can bash their face in within 5 turns so they can't reno.
The reason why aggro shaman is so good is it's favorites are heavy favorites, like 60/40 or better, whereas it's dogs are only 45/55. Whereas if you look at stuff like control warrior, it's favorites are slightly worse than 60/40 and it's dogs are huge, like 30/70 for some matchups.

Every deck has it's day. As does every player. Even Pirate Warrior can be played badly and lost with. Good players have good runs. Bad players don't. Simple.
There is always a top deck. You either play that deck, or a deck that beats the top deck while having only slightly worse matchups against other decks. The more popular the top deck is, the more you can tech against that deck (which is how we get decks like Control Warrior, with horrible winrate against many classes, but still climbs since its good matchups are so dominant.
Tempo Mage is currently not favored against the top decks, mostly because it can't run the pirate package to compete with Shaman, so it is not a good choice right now.

Mage needs some good pirates that enhance spells and abilities (rather than most of them being about weapons). That would possibly make Mage Pirate a possibility. Maybe.
Midrange is my prefered playstyle. I used to play Tempo Mage, Midrange Paladin and Midrange Hunter. I think the meta has polarized and Aggro and Control dominate it. You may try Dragon Mage or Midrange Shaman (with pirate package).

Soul Parade :)
Been playing buff paladin which is really fun most of the time, mainly because people don't know how to play against it.
But I'm only rank 7 so far. 10-10 on ladder today...smh
Still not sure if I hate Hearthstone...or love it.

Midrange/aggro shaman is for free a strictly better deck than Tempo mage and it plays similarly.
