Back in the day, when Hearthstone was still fairly new, I used to see a lot of threads about etiquette when it came to using the chat emotes. Most of the time these got ignored, mainly because one man's etiquette is another man's troll at times - and the emotes are limited, so there's not a lot you can / can't do. (Though spamming was generally considered bad form back then).
So that said, I noticed a comment on the "Salty" thread which mentioned about a person playing a "pirate deck" saying "Well Played!" before their lethal / finisher. While I get the frustration of the fact that it's a pirate deck (and though I have actually yet to come up against one, I gather they are irritating to play against), it got me wondering:
Is it no longer good form to say "Well Played" on your finishing turn? Should you only say "Well Played" AFTER you have dealt lethal? Sometimes you can bluff your way to a concede win by saying WP and making the opponent think you've won already. I admit I've done this once or twice before. What are people's thoughts on this?
I perceive "Well Played" either before or after lethal to genuinely mean; well played.
I tend to emote "well played" to pirate warriors on turn one for their complete lack of imagination, sarcasm after all is the finest form of wit, right?

Lol - you know I have a slightly masochistic desire to find a Pirate Warrior to play against to see how bad it is. Like I say, I've not come across them yet - I'm guessing they are sitting around further up the ranks.

You have not encountered a Pirate deck yet? What? They're even flooding casual!
Anyhow, saying well played on the final turn is, in my opinion sincere. However, I do understand it's irritating when you opponent sends you his well-played when you're dead on turn 4-5 and the only thing you did was Hero Power once and play one minion.
A part of game etiquette should be to be bold enough to play netdecks in ranked, not casual. Also, when you see me playing stupid Divine Shield minions without any thought put into gameplay (obviously for my daily), just let me play 10 of them.

HAHAHAHA! I literally did this yesterday! :-)
15 Divine Shield minions in game 1. 15 Demons in game 2!
:-P I didn't even play for win. I just spammed out the minions as fast as possible for Teh Goldz! :-)

IKR?
I dunno why I've not come across one yet. Though like I said in another thread, I don't play as much as I'd like. I reckon they're all afraid of my l33t Mage Secrets deck! XD
Mmm there is also a grey area of prematurely 'well playing'. I remember some matches where for example I had 8 health as a priest against a mage and he/she said well played on my turn. I was quite sure he/she had Pyroblast to finish me off even with hero power. Fortunately I could heal enough and had almost lethal on board, so the mage played his/her pyroblast next turn and I finished him/her.
Does anyone else sometimes make the slightly embarrassing mistake of mis-clicking the greetings at the beginning of the match, only for it to seem like you're being a troll instead?
I always feel really guilty when that happens! Lol!
Greet again when he's thinking a lot, actually it could be good idea to greet him every turn to remind him to play fast
Thank him or Oops when he misplays
Wow when RNG strikes, or some funny minion comes into play (like you're playing Reno, or he's playing Patches from the hand), if RNG was favourable, you can Greet your opponent as well
Well played or Greetings when you won, or even both
Threat when you lost
Allowed to Thank opponent if he said Well Played after the game
that is my usual opponent 4wd :D plus wow when he adds Arcanite Reaper for the final blow :D
honestly, it doesn't happen THAT often :) and then again 80% of these BM guys I don't even see it because I squelched - so everything's fine
PS: Hello when End Turn isn't pressed might indeed be useful in rare cases - I've seen it happen to me more than once that the click on End Turn didn't work and I was wondering why my opponent didn't play until his Hello showed me it was my fault ^^
Well played is completely degraded now. I think it should be used only to tell someone who really played well. If I lose in turn 4 doing absolutely nothing in game, i did NOT PLAY WELL. So if someone should use Well played it should be the one who loses to tell the winner, not the other way around.
For the past weeks i have been auto squelshing every single opponent due to the fact that people are just plain stupid.
If you have lethal and start by saiyng "My Greetings" or "huh Greetings..." and keep spamming emotes while playing all the cards possible, you are just a piece of ***.
"Greetings" at the start of a match "Well Played" right at the end - typically once a player has actually won or conceded rather than at the start of your turn or something. That's about all I do. Sometimes I will throw some extra emotes in if particularly crazy stuff is happening - thanking my Mad Bomber for hitting my face three times is a favourite - but that's about it.
This sums me up. I assume that it's cultural, going by the spelling of "favourite". British (or Brit-like) cultures would expect a greeting at the beginning, and an acknowledgement of play at the end.
When people threaten or BM me, I thank them each time. It seems to annoy them. When people give me the rope on purpose more than twice, I give it to them, and read Hearthpwn in the background. Funnily enough, they speed up pretty quickly :)
I allow my opponent the first turn to offer greetings. If they do I return the greeting and squelch. If they don't I squelch on T2. The emote system is idiotic and there's no way to ever know the intent behind any given emote so I see no reason to try interpreting it.
True - the emote system is incredibly limited. From my work on Runescape back in the day, I would imagine that it is in part a way of getting around the laws that govern "free" chat systems (which require age restrictions due to swearing and that sort of thing that can occur).
By using a fixed emote / chat system that only allows candid responses, it nullifies the requirement for an age restriction and keeps the game open to youngsters.
I typically just stick to "well played" at the end, and "wow!" when something crazy happens or when the opponent has an awesome turn with something creative I haven't seen before (and I might then also add "well played" for emphasis).
I will also say "oops" when I misplay a card or just completely screw up, so they know that I know I'm an idiot.
However, I do NOT say "well played" at the end of a match if I just steamroll someone and have close to all of my health, because it sounds kind of sarcastic.
I kind of wish there was a n "Agreed" or similar sort of emote. I sometimes get an opponent saying "Oops!" when they make a mistake, and I want to sort of commiserate / agree with them, but there's no emote that seems to work very well for that. All the other emotes come across as a bit troll-y if I use any of them after a mistake! Heh!

Please don't tell my girlfriend about my card collection...

When a Pirate said "well played". I replied "Thanks". Because I accept their compliment on my creativity.
Rongchoi's heroic adventure decks
They're even flooding casual!
I'm not afraid of the emote spamming, because at the start of a match I squelch my opponent so they cannot emote BM.

Hehe! It certainly sounds like everyone has their own individual forms of etiquette in these sorts of situations! :-D
