If you use something like hearthstone deck tracker it'll tell you if a card played was given by an ability because it'll have a little gift symbol by it.
If someone returned the card to their hand to play again and you didn't notice you need to start paying attention to what's going on.

To be fair, it would have said under one that was played "Created by xxxx" so he missed something.
