You get about 55g/day just doing dailies without rerollling. that's 20k/year. Subtract 3500 for adventure, and that's enough for 165 packs a year, just from doing the minimum number of games to compete daily quests without re-rolling.
80 packs per expansion and the adventure (plus another ~40 classic/year from tavern brawl) is adequate to play the game up to legend.
A other complain I have about this, other than my obsessive compulsive need to collect all the cards, is that It makes it so hard for new players to join the game.
I'm trying to convince a few friends to join the game. But knowing how many expansions they are launching, I know they won't stay, they will feel intimidated and will never see a way to catch up. When I started, it was'nt so bad, only classic and GvG were out. It was possible to make decks ignoring most GvG cards (with few exceptions), but now, try making a deck with only classic cards and see where that gets ya...
Not sure if you even think before you comment these things
I was gonna type a lot but got lazy, just think about the amount of cards you need to play standard and the amount of card you need to play wild
What does wild have to do with anything??
2 expansions a year means that standard will always hold 3 at the start of the year and 4 by the end of the year.
So I don't see why it's hard for you to understand how hard it is to join the game when the meta consist of 4 expansions and you just started collecting classic cards. Back when I started, GvG was the only expansion, it was'nt a big deal if you did'nt have most of these cards. Try building a deck ignoring the 4 expansions, you would be missing WAY to many cards.
It takes less than 2 months to have a base preparation for an expansion. I say 'less' because in the past it took 2 months doing dailies + 1 '10gold quest' back when having to do 40 gold quests was more common. Now that the average has gone up ..hmmm
taking Poodris' statement of 55g/day and assuming 10 gold quest triggering, that's 65 gold a day or 455 gold a week.
For expansions, you'll want between 3000-6000 gold (60 packs being the maximum as you should be focusing on arena+dust for legendaries after that).
Thus for a base foothold in an expansion, you'll need 6.5 weeks of pure gold grinding, assuming you play purlly casual and stop playing after you complete your daily and triggering one 10g pop. For optimum, 13 weeks.
So as long as you can start saving 1 1/2 months before the next expansion, you'll be fine. If you work your quests properly to minimize 50gold quests, do NOT miss a quest (as in don't let it get past 3 quests in queue).
So assuming an April expansion (which is the earliest any content has ever been (BRM was april, Old Gods in May) then if you START saving at mid February then you'll be doing fine.
If you want the maximum BEST position you can be, at 60 packs on release, you can start saving next month, in January.
So yeah, you can spend all of your gold right now (preferrably in arena) then start saving sometime between January and Mid February and you'll be opening 30-60 packs come next expansion.
Also note that you'll also have the next rotation kicking in so you could, if you are still desperate, dust some BRM/TGT/LOE cards that aren't quite critical for more dust.
Bottom line, F2Pers who are already in a semi ok spot in their collections should have no problems keeping up with the new system. Just remember to start saving at the right time. But if you ar ea F2Per, you should be used to that. Beats spending 4-6 hours a day grinding just to keep up like in most games though.
Certainly tougher than before, and drop rates for legendaries are so low. Still a FTP should be able to collect all the commons, most if not all rares, a handful of epics, and maybe a few legendaries each expansion. So able to keep up, but maybe very limited in what they can build.
I'm FTP and I don't feel like I'm running behind. I feel like I'm finally catching up. Started playing last year around this time and recently crafted Thalnos, bought 30+ packs with gold of MSOG and am enjoying myself in arena now, which incidentally earns me gold & MSOG packs (averaging ±6 wins). I've got a variety of viable decks I can play on ladder, reached legend for the first time in October (The grind is real, never again lol...) and I'm also liking the new cards. Can't play with all of them yet, which is why I watch streamers :) All in all, enjoying HS a lot.
To climb the ladder you need 3 good decks tops. You can get those by doing dailies easily. Two expansions a year is not that much, and iandakardid the math for you to proove it.
I think most complains show up at the release, when paying players have access to all cards right of the bat. After a month or so the salt washes out.
HS is still playable as F2P. OP's problem is he is not able to dedicate the time required to keep up in this mode.

Sounds to me like it's time to adjust your priorities then. If you don't have the time to get enough gold to keep up and don't want to hand over real money, then don't. Consider not playing the game anymore if it causes problems for you. I know, that's a shitty thing to say, but such is the reality of free-to-play games. People with enough time don't have to pay anything to keep up, and people with enough money likely don't have enough time to save up gold instead anyways. That's how they get you in the end.
To answer your actual question: I had 300 gold when MSG launched because I only just finished saving up for Karazhan, so together with the packs from the quests, I opened a total of 9 (NINE!) packs on launch, and I'm doing just fine on ladder. It all depends on how much you can compensate for the lack of cards with your own ability. So, no, the game is not getting too expensive to me, because it's still easier than in any other card game to build budget decks, no matter how many expansions they release.
(Also, I would really not recommend trying to collect 100% of the cards as a F2P player, that's just insanity.)
nah i just collect the viable cards , or the non viable but extremely fun , i just wanted to mention the 100% thingy for the poor completionist collectors out there
Can you explain to me exactly how Hearthstone got more expensive? The thing that's happening now already happened last year. WoTOG, LoE, and then ONiK. Now we're reseting.
exactly, we got 2 adventures and 1 expansion , now we will get 2 expansions in a row
It is not a problem if people know how to organize their priorities.
I've collected enough gold for 60 packs, opened them, used dust gained to craft whatever is good in this expansion and now I'm saving for the next one. There is no logic in buying packs when there isn't anything that you need. Once people get that and learn how and when to start saving their gold this won't be a problem anymore :)
Neither have expansions gotten bigger, nor faster, so no, you're wrong, even if you claim that you need all the cards, which is not true.
lol do you actually think or read before commenting ? read the post and get your shit right
Yes i have? Everything you said is wrong. Every year will have 2 expansions and 1 adventure, so it's obvious there will always be 2 expansions in a row, then an adventure, then 2 expansions and so on. Nothing of this is new.
meanwhile, a small magic set has around 200 cards, a big magic set has around 300 cards and each set is released every 4-5 months. And both digital/physical all you can use to buy those is real money.
HS remains as one of the cheapest CCG/TCG in the market.

Here lies the real problem for the new players. Classic cards are the backbone of many decks, and probably always will be.
Even though we have a steady influx of classic packs with Tavern Brawl, it might still be worth to buy them. You can't realistically count on opening a good legendary, but there's plenty of good epics, crafting which would cost you arm and leg. After you have all commons and rares, classic packs have better cards then expansions IMHO.

actually, we've never had two expansions back to back before. It's always have been expansion/adventure/expansion. Even when they declared the new system, it still resulted in us going from an adventure (loE) to expansion (Old Gods) to adventure (Kara) to expansion (Gadget).
The next expansion will be the first time that we will have back to back expansions, and it IS something to look into for F2Pers.
Thing is though, the new questing system sort of pre-solved the problem as it enhanced how much gold you can get regularly. The idea of a F2P going 60 packs every expansion used to be impossible unless you did very well in arena or had gold in hand before you started svaving. Now you can spend every gold you have in December in Gadget, start saving in January, and still hit 60 packs next expansion, and that's if the expansion hits early. And you really DOn'T have to have 60 pack openings to keep up as a F2Per (though it feels REALLY good :P).
I agree with most things you wrote but not with the last sentence. When you're not especially lucky, you need at least 60 packs and some 3-4k dust to craft missing crucial cards.
For me after 60 packs it's 6 epics (Lunar Visions, Mana Geode, Sleep with the Fishes, Brass Knuckles, Fel Orc Soulfiend and Fight Promoter) and one leg (Mayor Noggenfogger). Not too useful for most of the currently developing decks, now I'll have to decide which path to go and which leg(s) to craft, will have to use incoming gold for more MSoG packs and have only one classic pack per week from the TB to fill up my sketchy classic collection...

Well when it comes to packs you don't look at your epics and legendaries. Pack opening is a BAD way to get legendaries overall (see your Noggenfogger and realize next legendary he could show up again). Even if you spen dcash, unless you are a whale able to buy the 400ish (IIRC) packs you need to get an entire collection in one bite, you stop buying packs when you have most of the commons and rares. That typically happens at 60 packs.
After that you plan on crafting to fill in the gaps and grab those legendaries. The strategy for that is to wait. DO NOT craft anything now. Wait 2 weeks.
Why? Because Troggzor was still considered a great card a few days after GvG released and Vairan/Alvara were Must Gets. Because Yogg was considered trash in the first few weeks of the expansion, except for Trolden videos. That's why. Crafting now is a great way to end up with overhyped cards and 0 dust.
Wait 2 weeks. By then the overhyped cards that seemed good will lose their luster and the good decks, or at least interesting decks, will start to get refined. They tend ot shed legendaries at that point as well.
After that point, focus on decks you can MOSTLY make that requires only a few cards you don't quite have. Meanwhile, if you are ok enough with arena to get an average of 3 wins then focus your gold on that as that will net you the dust you need for further crafting. If you aren't good at arena, it's best to learn as arena is key to a good collection as a non-whale (that is both F2P and regular cash players).
Then spend the rest of December on that path. In January, if you want that 60 pack run then start saving then. Though if you have issues with your classic set you could consider more arena runs for dust until February and aiming for 40 packs next expansion (or a May release).
Point is, you'll get there. Keep using your time and resources efficiently and you'll have what you need.
Thanks for the extensive advice :) I just updated my collection via Innkeeper and it says
Common: 94/98
Rare: 54/72
Epic: 8/54
Legendary: 1/20
So you're (almost) right regarding the Commons and Rares ;) And I will heed your advice and wait for more information which Leg(s) to craft - gonna be a Christmas present then ^^

In terms of an expansion, it will be interesting to see how they address it since a LOT of cards in high use now will be cycling out.
I am talking about Brann, Reno, and the Dragons as an example.
Where exactly was it said that next addon will be a full blown expansion? Can't seem to find the info anywhere.
