I am a little bit disappointed with this new set. While the cards might be okay it is still the same thing all over again. No new keywords, no new strategies, no new archetypes. We are in the 5th major expansion, not even counting all the adventures and all that and it feels like magic the gathering alpha edition. The game is not progressing.
What this game needs is more tribes, synergies, fun combo's and more variety. How many battlecry: give minion +3 do you need really? It is turning into this game that you check every 2/3 sets or so, to see if they finally introduce new mechanics and overal strategies.
I agree with you. But the problem is that they took the failure of the Joust mechanic too hard. WotOG was a good expansion, it had good content, People were playing all kinds of decks ( at least in the beginning). They had a great opportunity in MSG, Tri Class cards sounds good but there are only 9 tri class cards which is truly disappointing. I think the number of tri class cards are low because they don't want to screw up like they screwed up joust. I hope they carry forward the tri class card theme forward.
Overall technically its the same thing again BUT one must not jump to conclusions till all cards are out. Maybe this expansion will be better then old gods.
I still do hope they incorporate more complexity to the game then what it is now like Adding tribes Like UNDEAD, Orc, Elves, Worgens, etc and cards that synergise with them would be nice.
I think the expansion is really good in comparison with other expansions, don't get me wrong even with the little stuff that is out but HS as a game isn't progressing. I agree with joust.
They have introduced several new mechanics. To name a few: Discover, cards that care about your deck state (Reno), cards that care about previously played cards (C'thun, Arcane Giant), cards that shuffle other cards into a deck, cards that play other cards directly from your deck, cards that trigger on discard.
The reason Magic keywords everything is because those effects otherwise needs a lot of text, which can be troublesome if you want many effects on a card. Hearthstone instead leaves out information to simplify reading, for example there is no information on Lord Jaraxxus or Majordomo about their Hero Powers.
If there is any criticism that I'd give in this area, that would be the lack of new card types. Minion, Weapon, Spell and Secret are all we've got, so there could easily be more progress made there.
Tribes have been expanded on several times. Beasts were promoted in Druid recently, Pirates were promoted in Warrior, Murlocs got a whole new archetype in Paladin, Dragon interaction was introduced, and back in GvG there was the Mech invasion. These aren't new tribes, but they didn't have much of a representation before these additions.
New strategies and archetypes are sometimes introduced, but in the end it all breaks down into a few eternal archetypes, like Face/Burn or OTK. This never really changed in Magic either, it's hard to make something truly new without changing the core workings of the game. But to name some additions: Fatigue, Mill, and many decks based on single unique deck-enabling cards like Astral Communion, Patron and Reno.
In relation to the topic, actually look at all the cards so far. Can you honestly say nothing revealed so far is good?
No I didn;t say nothing revealed so far is good. I say the cards are good and probably better than previous expansions but the game isn't progressing as a whole. That was my point.
And this expansion again doesn't do anything for the game to improve THUS far.. i havent seen the other cards yet :)
You realize that a game can improve without adding new keywords right?
Archetypes aren't a big thing in hearthstone. I'm sorry but if you like archetypes play yugioh. Theres not that many groups of monsters to begin with.
Almost every time new cards some out synergies are figured out and discovered. So saying we need new synergy is strange, since it always comes.
Just now secret hunter has become a real thing. Completely new druid decks went straight to top tier with the cards they had access to. Like 5 warrior archetypes were played since WOTG. I have no idea what you are talking about.
Don't expect HS to grow as MtG in complexity and mechanics. It will always be using some or much RNG which is something that traditional card games can't use in a big extent, and that's about it. Keep in mind that it's a game that needs to be kept simple and seem fun for new people to get in quickly.
You can't use complex card rules in HS so they mix and match existing stuff into new ideas that are keeping their code workable. SInce there are no reaction windows to opponent's actions, don't expect anything fancy.
And this expansion again doesn't do anything for the game to improve THUS far.. i havent seen the other cards yet :)

I realize that but battlecry: +3 health until end of turn doesn't do that. I skimmed over the new cards and see nothing that does improve the game that's in any way different than what other expansions did :P But in all fairness: only 33 cards have been released out of 132.

Improving the game is EXTREMELY vague. What if I liked priest and thought priest being good would improve the game? Then this expansion looks amazing so far.
If you are looking for unique mechanics I can list the ones so far from recent cards released
-Discovering from opponent's deck
-Creating a custom spell
-Multiclass Cards
You can argue that some of the cards are borderline new mechanics, like pirate summoning from the deck, but most of them are variations on some other cards. If you wanted a set to complain about talk about karazhan. That adventure was very lame in terms of unique mechanics.
Otherwise wait until the expansion is fully announced to pass judgement.
On top of all of this, I'm going to let you in on a secret. Hearthstone is meant to be a casual game. It was designed that way from the ground up. Adding more mechanics complicates the game, which is something the designers very much want to avoid.
If there is any criticism that I'd give in this area, that would be the lack of new card types. Minion, Weapon, Spell and Secret are all we've got, so there could easily be more progress made there.

Magic introduced one new card type after 20 years, planeswalker. Hasn't even been 5 for hearthstone.
But the second part is the big one, unique "interesting" effects tend to be do nothing cards that see no play, or (in hearthstone probably broken) combo pieces with little in between. If it doesn't affect the board or provide value, why are you playing it? And too much value is just durdle, shit this game massively caps and punishes durdle.
There are a lot of great cards so far many of which are something new BUT:
Everyone of them is much weaker than:
Fiery War Axe, Fireball, Hex, Preparation, Innervate, Flame Imp, Tyrion Fordring and tons of other Classic and Basic Cards.
In M:tG they almost always had the expert expansion a power level higher than the basic set - so excitement was correlated to the power as well as the freshness of the cards.
First of all, tri-class cards is just neutrals limited to 3 heroes, nothing to be excited about, it isn't some super duper new design lol. Hearthstone was limited by design since it's first preview, the fact that it is so popular and ppl fouly think that it is somewhat competitive is the problem that people like you don't understand why the game doesn't change. They never planned it to change, it was casual card game in the universe of warcraft with easy mechanic, not some skillful strategic combo-based game (and pulling 6 cards for patron/worgen, then hitting them all in one turn without any chance to react from your opponent isn't skill). So yeah, don't expect many new mechanics in hearthstone ever, the game is meant to be easy to pick up for total newcomers including ppl that newer played any video game before and they saw this on play/apple store. If you wanna more competitive card games there are plenty, but they aren't blizzard games so they don't have milions of fanboys.
What have we seen... 34 of 132 new cards? Do you get 25% into a movie and complain that that there is no story arc, no character development, and no ending?
Wait until all the cards are announced, and then wait until they are released and we can play them. Then come and share your judgement on the expansion.
I actually like that way, because surely youve seen what happened to Magic in which it simply forces a gimmick keyword in every new set which is generally pointless.
People saying that we have only seen 25% of cards. They say that every expansion and every expansion we get same boring cards, no new game modes nothing.

Tri class cards are not good enough for ya??

If you got the coin, the Mercenaries get going. Vote for The Mercenary for CCC #3.

I wait are u talking about the new priest card you understand it's not till end of turn right
and the new create a custom spell card that's not new . When did. U see that before
