I think October is playing out oddly- Usually by this time, it's a little easier to climb ranks. I'm still running into fairly strong/meta decks at 18-20 so it's been a bit slow this month for me. Usually I cruise to the 12-13 area before things slow down and I stop grinding.
Yeah, It could be related to the Tyrande release timing or the nerfs... hmmm
As I already answered, it's mid rank by expected skill level of players you will play at that rank. Ranks 20-5 are full of casual players, so you can't seriously say they are players of mid skill.
No. High ranks are 5 and higher.
It just sounds weird for me but people can classify ranks whatever they want, so it's not worth discussing. Everyone want believe that he's mid rank, even he's misplaying every turn. I don't mean you, just how psychology works.
If you ask everyone, the really good players will all tell you that at rank 5 the pro level begins. Why? Well you need time and reasonable good nerves as this is when the grind starts. This is when everyone stops playing (usually).
Low ranks 25-21 & Legend : why legend ? Once you get legend, unless you are aiming for top something, you play casual style and almost fun/non top tier decks... and that's refreshing when it has been one week you only played sham/war ^^
Mid ranks 20-6 : some grind, some do not, hard to tell... and almost everyone got a good deck (not sure he knows how to use it thought ^^). You can find it harder than before cause people netdeck, and for example testing some new cool deck you just figured will only lead you to a loss most of the time... Anyway as the month comes to his end it is easier cause "good" players ore not there anymore.
Top ranks 5-1 : every one got a good deck, goes to the rope if needed to think it out, never surrender, a part from 1-2 cards you know their decks, they know yours as well and a mistake just makes you play 2 others games to come back where you should be.
Ultimate ranks top +/-300 legend. Especially at the end of the month.

There is no cancer deck in hearthstone ! You are the Cancer !
I don't think so. I've been coasting through the ranks with priest, so surely it can't be any more challenging than before? I've also seen a serious decline of hunters, so I'd imagine people should have an easier time laddering overall.

Look, I want to tell you something because you're very dear to me. And I hope you understand that it comes from the bottom of my damaged, damaged heart. You are the finest piece of ass I've ever had and I don't care who knows it. I am so glad that I got to roam those hillsides.
As already mentioned, ranks 1-5 are the top 2.5% of players. That is not "Mid Ranks" by any stretch of the imagination. Also, by that bizarre definition the only "High Ranks" that exist are Legend.
How is Rank 1 not a high rank on a pyramid of 25-0?
There also another possible explanation for the phenomenon - it's possible that hardly anyone has bothered much with ranked this season, and as a result, a lot of players who would normally climb quite quickly are still hovering around much lower ranks than normal.
If you're better then other random 50 players - it doesn't mean that you're high skill player, probably it's your opposition is low-skill players, and you're middle. Just understand that it's classification by skill level, not by player count.
That still doesn't make any sense. The ranked ladder (or pyramid) already approximately divides players by skill, and 97.5% of players don't reach level 5. That's the whole point of it.
By your definition, all of those people who sit below Legend are 'of average skill', which is obviously not the case, since that's 99.5% of all players. I'm beginning to think people are being elitist for the sake of being elitist.
No, it's not my definition, you're wrong. Not all of those people who sit below Legend are 'of average skill', but in average skill level of players at rank 6 and below is low. And yes, it means that skill level of 97.5% of players is low. That's why I call it 'low ranks'.
Yes, all winstreaks broken by midrange shamans on rank 9-7 is just a skill test for players
At the end of september, i played losestreak from 7 to 12 in 4 days, because 5 of six games were shamans. Played as midrange hunter (shame on me, but at least not shaman), winning really lot of games. That's not salt thread, bot not so many classes can get that perfect curve: trogg into totem golem into flametongue. Pure skill
That's absurd. You're literally claiming that 97.5% of players have below average skill, 2% are of average skill, and 0.5% are above average.
Seriously, think about it. Think about what the words middle and average mean and come back.
By statistics 50% of players are below Rank 18 at the end of the season. By your logic Rank 18 is Mid Rank. In reality it's the bottom.
Your mistake that you claim that average player is middle skill, but in reality average player skill is extremely low. Probably I'm too bad in English to explain this.
I'm fine if you want to call ranks 25-5 the low range. It just makes you sound extra douchy.
Doesn't change my question at all though.
Lol you certainly started a war of semantics. I think that ranks 20-5 are much harder because the meta is so straightforward now and most decks just try to play on curve. When Patron warrior was the best deck around you still wouldn't see it too often below rank 10 because it was fairly hard to play correctly. Same with Miracle Rogue or other combo decks. The way a top 100 legend play would play aggro shaman is almost exactly the same way a rank 14 player would play aggro shaman.
All the people you see playing Hunter or Shaman at low ranks are probably pretty good with those decks but wouldn't be able to pilot a miracle rogue deck with any consistency. It's a lot harder now because the top tier decks are more consistent and much easier to play than some previous tier 1 decks. I think these decks are about as strong and easy to play as mech mage and zoolock, easier than miracle or combos but harder than secret pally and face hunter.
Rankings are relative to other players. So if 97.5 percent of people do not reach rank 5... then rank 5 and below can never be mid-ranks as this is not relative to other players. Rankings in ladder are not directly correlated to skill (they do to some degree, but there is the win streak bonus system) Also some players do not grind games hours upon hours to rank up, some just play for fun an hour or so every other day (as they have lives, wives, kids, jobs, other hobbies, etc). The mid ranks would be whatever rank that at the end of the season said you were in the top 50 percent of the player base... which is probably 18 or so I would guess. I want to clarify what I am saying as well. Ranks here is not correlated to skill, but your position on a ladder compares to other players.. so ranks 1-5 may contain people of moderate skill, but they are still in the top of the player base on the ranked ladder. Those at rank 10-20 are in the average ranks of the player base (mid ranks), but may be composed of people with little skill, moderate skill, or alot of skill (depends where they spend there time and how much they spend in the game).
A reminder to everyone on here too, do not start spouting the fact that it was easy for "YOU" to make it to rank 2 in just 14 hours of gameplay in a month playing a fast netdeck. Let's be friendly to each other, and other's. We must remember that ranks do not equal skill, they are best described as a product of skill, deck quality, time, and luck. Time spent playing ranked * power level of deck * skill level of player * luck with win streaks = rank. This means you can have a high skill level and be at rank 17, or a low skill level and be at rank 5.
September was the second time i didn´t reach rank 5. Usually only do dailies, play every class both in standart and wild, and get rank 5 both. Last month had less time to play, but couldn´t get past rank 7, the meta was so diversed that my winrates went too much close to 50%, and at the end of the season didn´t have time to grind. I think the "average skill" is rising little by little. And this month did 8 games in wild, 4 Secret paladins, 2 freeze mages, 1 midrange hunter and 1 nzoth priest. Nothing wrong with that, except that i am rank 19 at the moment, the players i faced had non budget decks, golden heroes and knew how to think ahead.
I wait until about a week or two into the month before climbing to let all the Legend players climb up or whatever. But the past few days I have been struggling a bit to get up to 15-10 on Standard and Wild. Possibly due to my deck choices (Maly Rogue, Thief Rogue, N'Zoth Rogue, Curator Druid, N'Zoth Druid), but normally I'm up to 15-10 in a hearthbeat with basically any deck I throw together.
This month has been a bit tougher, but I think I'm going to go back to Miracle Rogue for a while to try and get some better wins. Imo Miracle used to be the most fun Rogue period, but honestly I have been having way more fun with Thief (Standard) and N'Zoth (Wild) lately. Probably going to continue to piddle with Thief for another week or so, but most likely going to switch to Miracle to climb ranks a bit later.
I think someone mentioned this already (hard to tell with trying to read the posts that are actually on topic in this thread), but I think a combination of the nerfs and Tyrande's release had something to do with people experimenting with other decks, but now are returning to the toughest decks to make up for "lost time" so to speak. To the point of the nerfs, I don't think I've faced a Yogg deck once since his nerf, so possibly a lot of those decks disappearing are increasing the matchups with aggro/face stuffs. I don't have enough games in since the nerfs to back that up, but I know a ton of people rage-dusted Yogg since the nerf so it seems kind of likely.

Does it only count in casual, arena, and tavern brawl?
Casual only.
Arena matches you with other players with the same number of wins, Brawl as far as I'm aware is just random.
Actually that isn't true. Hearthstone does have MMR that it factors into your match making. However, there are two things that prevent you from seeing it all that much.
1st. Generally there is a healthy player base so you don't see it that often just due to sheer numbers of people playing at any given rank.
Going along with that, the second reason is that heathstone is balanced to try and keep you as close to a 50% win rate as possible. No, I do not mean tin foil hat argument that it matches you with winning / losing match-ups, but that there is less skill involved in the game than many other card games which forces even excellent players closer to a 50% win rate than skill balance alone would do.
If you have a significantly higher win % than normal, you can pretty easily get matched up with someone 3-4 ranks higher. If I am busy with work at the start of the month and do not start laddering until the 3rd week, I will generally see matchups like this.
For me it tends to be the time of day that I've noticed more than anything else. At certain times of the day I can hit a few win streaks. At others, it's a grind to climb. Otherwise, I've found it about as challenging for a while, even before WotOG.

tbh i found 20-15 insanely difficult compared to 15-~8 , no idea why but it is hard af
and 15-5 is certainly mid ranks
You guys should make an account on Asia server - insanely difficult. I'm talking tier 1 decks at rank 20.
