The only thing I see wrong with it, is that it is a "rich get richer" kind of deal, which tends to encourage people to play the most horrific cancer decks that easily craftable, or can autopilot to the top of the ladder. However since people did this before there were rewards, all it does is encourage it a little. That said it is eminently fair, if you are prepared to cancer your way up the ladder, every month, then it can rapidly increase your collection if you dust the golden cards and craft any epics/legends that you are missing to make that wallet warrior deck you have always wanted :p
Then what is the alternative. Better players should get more rewards otherwise there is no real point to competitive. This isn't kindergarten anymore there are no participation awards (although Blizzard has done that to Overwatch competitive . . . ). You should have to be better and play dozens of games for good prizes. You should be encouraging the group of players that are playing more (thus will have a larger collection from weekly brawl packs and daily quests), than players that rarely play and thus will have smaller collections.
It also isn't difficult to get budget decks that can get you to high ranks.
I think the rewards are okay (not so much if you compare it to other games). I remember we used to get only the card back, but as soon as they implemented the reward system, I gradually started to get better since I was trying my best the first 2 months. Before that I think I only reached rank 9 or so. after rewards it became standard (and easier each time) to get rank 5 :p
Doing the math, yeah the dust amount you can get is almost like getting a pack (with card you might even end up d/e-ing). I prefer the golden cards any day but they should give double golden epic for legend or something like that.
I like this reward way more than a pack or two. If I get this reward, I get maybe 1 golden card I don't have yet + some dust. If I get a pack, I get insta 40 dust. Fine for me
I think things could certainly be improved a little bit. I would like to see things included in the monthly prize to help out the ftp and brand new players a little bit, as they already have a pretty steep path when they first get started into the game. Being so far behind experienced players can be frustrating, and helping them out in any way helps a lot. Maybe they could encourage new players by giving you a little extra dust or a pack or two or something to help out players in their first 3 or so ranked seasons to encourage those players.
but that being said I think it is overall pretty good reward for doing nothing but playing the game. Getting to rank 5 gives you pretty good value, Golden epic, 2 commons, and dust. Assuming the epic sucks (which is usually does lol) then it is a free 400 dust. That's a lot.
Compared to other games, yes this is very little. Also for getting legend, if you get it once for the card back, why would you climb there again? there is no incentive other than personal reasons. In games like Faeria, you get a golden card back for each season you get legend, so you have a reason to climb there and get your monthly reward.
i really dont know what else blizzard can do to try to convey to you that they dont want this game to be truly competitive.
making the game more competitive just loses them customers most likely
If you compare the top ladder players with the top arena players, the rewards are absolutely laughable.
Top 1% arena players: 50 free packs per month.
Top 1% ranked players: 1 free golden epic per month.
Playing ladder is free. Arena has an entry fee of 150. When you get ''free'' packs there is a time and gold investment (specially time) involved. Becoming an infinite arena player is not as easy as people might think.
Also, Arena is a harder and more skilled than ranked, requires time of dedication and study of all the possible movements, since every deck is different, you can't google the opponent's deck to solve a problem.
Although I agree that ladder rewards at the end of season should be higher, and include gold or packs.

If you can hit rank 5 every season -- you play enough to go infinite in arena, or at the very least, get one daily arena; 5 wins average.
First, Yes. Kinda. Looking at those rewards independently they are kind of lackluster. However when you consider everything that we can do and receive for free within Hearthstone it becomes apparent that it is balanced. The quest system gives gold (which you can do whatever you want with) and quite a bit of it over time. With time and effort one could keep up with expansions being free to play. Tavern Brawl is a mode that creates different scenarios outside of normal play and gives a free card pack. While the enjoyment doesn't last long Its still fun logging on getting a free pack and playing a few brawls. Arena gives quite a few rewards for good runs and most of the time you'll net a positive in gold. If you are playing to collect and advance I'd suggest you play that. Before they gave the monthly rewards, after people reached Legend there was zero incentive to rank up at all. People would either Win farm at rank 20 or pros and streamers would stay at legend. The monthly chest was a small bonus to those more casual that ranked, it wasn't meant to supplement those that did.
To conclude if Ranked mode was the only way to play yes, it should be more rewarding. However there are other ways to make gains and its only meant to add a very small incentive to that mode of play.
I feel that rank 10 and legend rank rewards are a little bit low and that they don't motivate you enough to go from a previous "stage" (rank 15 and rank 5) to the next one. That's a reason why so many "unskilled" players end at rank 15 every season and same goes with the rank 5 and skilled players.

Exactly my first thought when i read this topic.
Getting 2-3 cards for your achievement during an entire month while in arena you kinda get it for playing 1 decent run. Thats just rediculous, even when ranked is free and arena isn't.
But heaven forbids it turns out to be a rich get richer deal, that wouldn't make me happy either. I think reaching legend is something you do for bragging rights, no need to get huge extra reward there (compared to rank 1-5) as being legend is the reward. And current bonus for reaching rank 20 is fine to as achieving those low ranks is very easy to.
Maybe increasing the difference between bonusses from rank 15 towards rank 5 might help as that would also improve the top rank bonusses without making it to much of a rich getting richer game like arena currently seems to be.
And to be fair, i see many people write a pack is worth less then the cards we get. However, to a new, or in rich getting richer terminology a poor, player the pack is worth a lot more then the golden cards we get and the dust they represent.Therefor adding packs might allow you to get better rewards without further stacking the people who already got it all.
I wouldn't mind getting more packs as i currently keep spending all my gold on packs anyway due to me being behind so much. Not complaining about getting that golden epic every month tho, i like all the cards i get even with the current reward system.I'm always excited to see what i get at the end of the month. Just like tavern brawl where you get "only" one classic pack, i just can't wait to open it every wednesday :D
Well, i think ladder rewards are ok-ish. Maybe they could use some sort of refinement. Like, keeping current average values, but changing the form in which rewards appear according to needs:
more packs for lower ranks (to enlarge their collection)
more golden and dust for higher ranks (so they get mats to craft those few cards they might need).
For example, reward for rank 20 could be 1 classic pack, instead of a golden common.
rank 15: 3 packs instead of golden rare + common.
rank 10 maybe a mix of a few packs + golden, or just golden.
This game has no intention to reward time, it was made to make kids into gambling addicts and keep investing time and money with little to no reward so they can keep profiting per addiction.

Who is talking about competitive? We want more/ better monthly rewards....

I think its a bad idea to just hand out a bunch of packs to players in the lower ranks. Then players would be content where they currently are and wouldn't really try to ladder higher. The current rewards are mostly fine but I think everyone of them could use a little more stuff especially the reward for hitting legend.

Wait, are you kidding me??? We used to get NO REWARDS
It's better than nothing, but any rank under 5 gives you shit.
i got rank 3 top 0.5% rewards were shit.
5 wins average.
They get 10 gold for every 3 wins as well.
