I'm playing HS for over a year now and still consider myself a noob. I unlocked all adventures, have a good set of different cards to compete with the upper ranks. And the best: All for free. The problem is, I suck. No, really... I am really bad at this game. Sure, I can't put a single top tier deck together, even thoug i own some really nice cards already. I'd say, a good player could make it to legend with my account, while i have problems climbing to rank 10 or so. No amount of money can buy skill though, that's why I'll continue to play for free.
Rank 10 is in the top 10% of all HS players. If you can make it there, you dont "suck" at this game.
Rank 10 is not the top 10% of all HS players, it's the top 10% of Ranked HS players who played that season, keep in mind most Ranked players only get the cardback, are newbies on 25-20 and even more newbies who're attempting to ladder with sub-par decks.
Ok, so it puts the player in the top 10% of all players he's actively competing against. HUGE difference.

You should try reading my comment again, even if someone does only one game on ladder, it writes them up all the same as players who actively play on ladder.
Bottom line is, those percentages don't mean much as they're highly inaccurate.
I think it really has to do with the rank of your character to an extent. I have a full collection, about 80-85% golden and have played since open beta. I don't have all the time in the world to grind but I've found this month that it has been much harder to rank up in standard. All of my heroes are rank 60.
That said, my wife has a seldomly played account, not even logged on since before The Grand Tournament if I'm correct. She hasn't even gotten all of the basic cards yet. I logged in her account to get her the free WoG cards in case she decides to play sometime and built a very basic aggro warrior without even Arcanite Reapers since she hadn't earned them yet. I moved up to rank 19 in standard in about 11 games so matchmaking for higher ranked heroes must be part of it. Ranking is still possible at her levels.
I find it not much of a coincidence that a thread has now popped up about is it ok to farm gold/wins at rank 20 on the forum. Food for thought there as well.

U can't expect to be as competitive as others when u spend little to no money, that's ridiculous. People should be happy that They are even able to be 100% FTP, it's easy to earn gold, hell u can earn it from tavern brawls, not only that but u can even use it to buy adventures. To think that FTP and IAP players should be on the same level is absurd.
I have a FTP and a IAP account, both of which I reached rank 5, it takes more time when u spend no money, more grinding, and a lot more losses. That's all part of spending 0$.
Lol, my old account I have in my signature got hacked. I've been playing on a new f2p account for 3 months. I've made it to rank 5 every season with garbage budget decks. I run a mech mage that has BOULDERFIST OGRE and no Dr boom. It's quite depressing actually.

Yes, the game is very easy with auto-pilot decks like mech mage.
Oh please....things is even worse in the Asia Server. How bad? You're bascially constantly seeing legendary players right after Rank 10, and at Rank 20 you can already see super expensive decks such as Freeze Mage and Control Warrior.
And the ladder is always flooded by cancerous decks....I still remember myself being almost forced to play mill rogue as it was everywhere when Gang up came out...
Basically....please F2P is too tough for kids. You either buy them a full price console/PC game so that they no longer have to think about all these packs stuff...or you sponsor them at least 60 each so that they could at least get enough dust to made a viable deck
The model is same for all f2p, p2w games. All spending money does is speed up the process.
Though admittedly, the game does become funner to play once you have access to a larger pool of cards. So whether they can stick around long enough to "get there", depends on the individual.
I felt that when I first started playing this game and reached Rank 20. Hell, it was terrible to build an average deck that could get past 20.
A solution could be blocking players from losing stars once they win 20-30 times in a rank, up until Rank 15, I guess.
How does that fix anything? It just moves Ladder Hell to rank 15-12.
The only real solution to this would be adding a 3rd Ranked option called Baby Ranked where you can only play with premade basic decks, can't earn gold or golden portraits and as a Legend reward you get a cute Baby Legend cardback.
Oh, you also shouldn't be able to loose Ranks on Baby Ranked so nobody gets too upset.

This solutions is stopping freeload and so pay some money to get good cards. No game are free and hearthstoners should not freeload the game.
What a full life you must live... How many hundreds of dollars did you dump into digital dust to have such a shitty attitude. I'm not talking about F2P going to legend I'm talking about at least having a chance to find ranked play fun and competitive thru like rank 15.
No matter whethers rank 15 or legend, you must pay so u want to play a game. Easy as it, to get it, you buy it. Nothing difficult.
Been a F2P player since April 2014, all I can say is for some months you just have to log in, do your quests and then log out. Get the gold, buy the adventures first, then some packs. In the meanwhile try to educate yourself from Youtube, Twitch, and sites like Hearthpwn. By the time you have the cards you need, and trust me when that time comes you wont be thinking oh no how much time did I put in this, then you can even play competively, Yes, you got that right, even before you get all the cards you need you can get legend. The most common thing people confuse with F2P is that they cant reach high ranks in ranked play cause of the lack of cards only, I used to think that too. Learn the game, grind a little bit, and then the fun begins, at least for the people who want it.
So I have a secondary account that I have spent no money on. I set it up to have a quick, surefire way to complete Spectate quests on my main account (I have friends, they're just never online BabyRage), so I started with a basic Priest deck, and after some dust from quests and arena, built a decent f2p circle Priest. Now I only play one game at a low rank whenever I have the spectate quest, so I spectate myself on my tablet. Just about every time it's a free win, not because the deck is OP but because I make better trades and get value out of high health minions. But one day, at rank 23, a week or two into the season, I run into a freeze Mage. I had crazed alchemist in that deck, so it felt good to kill that first doomsayer, but I didn't have an answer to the second one. I watch streams, tournaments, and have played freeze myself, so I know the deck and how to play around it, but there's only so much you can do, and I imagine running into one of these T1 decks would be really discouraging for your nephews. And you can't even escape powerful decks in "casual" mode. Last game I played in casual mode was against face Shaman. I beat it with Reno Hunter, but a new f2p deck just gets crushed by that, because healing in standard is not easy.
I have been free-to-play since shortly before LoE came out. I wasn't that interested in the adventures when I first started, simply because I didn't really understand what they were. The release of LoE got me interested, so I spent my gold on it and ended up with some pretty nice cards. I became more interested, did a little research online, and discovered the others were a guaranteed good source of cards for my gold.
Now I've unlocked all adventures, picked up something along the lines of 70+ packs through gold+tavern brawls (I didn't always play daily) and I have only 3 legendaries that I opened from packs (Y'shaarj, Sylvanas, and Boogeymonster Yay). I had no interest in playing ranked because I had no business there, in my opinion. Recently, I saw that a Shaman deck was cheap and easy to make, and I had never really played the class before. Instant rank 15 where I figured "Eh, that's good enough for me for now."
As far as new players just starting? Free C'thun, free cards to support it, 13 free packs, and an entire set+adventure of old cards they won't have to worry about. Seems like a pretty decent start to me. On top of that, Grand Tournament, Black Rock Mountain, and League of Explorers will be gone next, leaving us with Classic (Where a new player should be putting their money/gold for best results), WotOG, and whatever Adventure and Expansion releases next. If you can't compete currently, grind and save and get on board with the next new Standard.
Even though it's Free-To-Play, as with any such game, you still have to spend time or spend money.
while i can understand the pain of doing ranked matches (myself being new and not able to breach rank 17 after a few months play), i do wanna remind some that... there's always casual matches which still helps with the quests.
sometimes, i just resort to casual matches to complete my quests as i noticed that it's really very much easier to win there. sorry if i seem like a bully when i play on casual (stomping on those decks made up of free and common cards). i really do feel sorry and i just wanna get my win. on a side note, i told myself i'd give out free wins in casual as well.
anyway, my point is... ranked matches can be hard. if one is feeling the heat, take a break and just go casual. :)
Guys I think Blizz give a teen rating for this game for a reason, kids need to pass their math test before playing HS.
I used to be F2P and I do agree that F2P player have all the access to get better and eventually able to compete in competitive level but they need to invest a lot of time or in exchange they can spend money, there is no other short cut.
I would've honestly preferred to pay a 1-time sum for the game and be able to grind cards same way, and with adventures being free and more rewarding.
You can do exactly that. If you had taken advantage of the promotion, you would have gotten 50 packs for 50 bucks.
That is more than enough cards to build a decent deck, several epics, a couple of legendaries, and enough dust to fill the gaps in the competitive deck of your choice.
Once you're off to that pretty good start, you need only complete your daily quests (which are free), and by the time the next adventure comes out you'll have more than enough to get it without paying a dime.
By the way, adventures are already extremely rewarding, so that part of your wish is a bit unrealistic.
