I'm sorry if this has a similar post to elsewhere.
I started playing casually last week and am lost on how to proceed, mostly with how I should use gold.
I have 415 gold. Levelled up Mage/Paladin/Priest past level 10, I plan to finish the rest in practice mode soon. I used Priest to earn the 5 Whispers of the Old Gods packs for 7 wins once I reviewed a basic Priest setup and battle theory. I won 4/5 in casual today with that setup, only lost to a Paladin with some murloc change cards that I knew I'd not last against.
What should I do with the gold? Buy packs - if so which ones? Buy adventures - if so which one? I did the auto disenchant, and haven't even though about what to do with the arcane dust(140, which I'm guessing isn't much).
I'm not looking to spend money in the game yet, I just enjoy playing lightly right now and learning. Any advice would be appreciated.
First, make sure you are completing all the hidden quests. Look at them HERE
Now when it comes to what to use your gold on, the adventures are AMAZING value but make sure you're just getting the most recent ones, definitely League of Explores when you can and MAYBE Blackrock Mountain if you can. Before that you should probably get some cards to compete, i would recommend CLASSIC packs since they are generally more "useful" and will never leave standard but don't hesitate to play ARENA to get better value if you win more yet you can only get the newest expansion packs, which isn't terrible. If you aren't getting 3+ wins in arena it's better to just buy CLASSIC packs and sometimes the new expansion packs. Hope this helps, good luck!
I would just buy some basic packs! There'll be some other players who're like "Omg! You gotta totally go into arena cause that's how you learn and you can also get packs back and its a fun time" but in all honesty, as a beginner you're gonna struggle a ton! It's not that fun in my opinion until you actually play constructed a bit. In terms of what to do in the meantime, I would watch Trump's f2p stream! He shows how he actually got to legend on a brand new account. Basically he didn't grind out arena for a ton of packs, instead he just kept ranking up and over time gathered packs, disenchanted stuff, and focused on one class. Good luck in your quest!!
on hearthpwn, check the "Forums >> Quests and Dailies" section and complete all the freebies within your means.
with the gold, hold on to it... definitely refer to some resources (streams, heartharena.com) on navigating the arena. try it once and see how you like it. now, 3 wins can net 1-2packs which is really worth it in terms of expanding your collection quick, but the difficult part is to pick up playing on arena. regardless try it once to get a feel of some of the cards you don't have.
TLDR: for now try arena once and make the best of it, and don't be discouraged if you lose 0-3.
Thanks everyone. I need to get a character to level 20 to get tavern brawl open and the rest of my base characters to 10.
BRM costs 700 gold to start, and I only have 415. I'm guessing each fo the 5 areas within BRM cost gold to start, and as a new player with 415, 700*500 sounds like a lot!
I doubt in the packs I've opened that the game gave me I've gotten anything that rare, but is there any way to keep track of what you have so you have some idea how good or bad the cards you have are?
I tried arena once, and went 0-3 mostly due to having no idea how to construct a good pack I think. I overinvested in costly cards that you have to wait too long to use.
Hmm, well, the theorycrafting is still new so be ready for a lot of different ideas, but:
1. For now, I'd say buying packs. Arena is great.. IF you do well in it, but new players tend to have a hard time with it. Arena starts being viable once you can do an average of 3 wins there. For now, packs will work. As far as which packs, I'd say Classic. The meta is still VERY in flux but for now it seems a lot of classic cards are still heavy in the running. Besides, it's the 'evergreen' set and won't go away for a while so it's a safe pick anyway.
As far as dust, hold it tightly. You will want to craft some cards, but you want to be VERY careful what you craft, at least early on. The fewer commons/rares you craft to get to a good spot, the better as, eventually, dust is best placed for getting epics/legendaries, which packs rarely give out.
What's a good spot? In this order:
1. A grinding deck. A deck that you can get some wins on. In Casual, about 50/50 win/loss will work. In Ranked, I'd say something that could get you to rank 15. Sidenote, try ranked when you can as you get gold cards depending on how well you do in there at the end of the month.
Typically that's either a C'thun deck or an aggro deck. Though really if that priest deck is doing well for you then well.. there you go, stick with it.
2. decks for each class that you can win games with. Doesn't ahve to be even a 50% win rate.. just enough to complete quests. If you can manage it by just dumping some free cards and whatever you have into a deck and spamming it until you win then that'll do. I knew some 'basic' decks that did so but they are OLD and some of hte cards have been altered since then, so you may need to hunt a little for any classes you have trouble in.
Otherwise, if you need to craft cards or dust something to get #1 or 2 then do so, but try to do as little as possible. The less you spend now, the better overall. If you plan to dust anything, de A LOT of research on the card to find if it's useful anywhere (even if it's a class you don't like).
Once you have a deck you can grind a bit with and can complete quests, from there, just focus on getting gold, buying packs, hoarding dust, and building your collection.. and practice. Learn the game, how to trade ,how to mulligan, and so on. If you can add in learning Arena, that'll be a MAJOR boost as well as arena is the best place for a F2Per.. once you can do well enough in it.
I would say don't craft anything for a good few months. Any crafting decisions you make while you're still new are very likely to be bad ones you'll regret. Just grow your collection organically either by buying packs or playing arena.
As much as I want to say spend it on arena for the best value, I remember not enjoying arena for a little while when I started playing. Eventually arena is the way to go but maybe just buy packs for now.
Lots of people have said it, but I have to reiterate. Classic is the best value for a new player until you have a good collection. Then I'd get the first wing of BRM, all of LoE, and then get some WOG packs to throw together a decent C'thun deck. It's not impossible to get 100g a day if you are lucky with your dailies, and always reroll the 40g ones. The only time you don't want to do that is if you have synergy between them. Like, if you have one to win 2 with mage or priest, and another to win 5 with priest, all you have to do is win 5 with priest and you've got a good chunk of gold.

We only get one daily quest a day, and often they are for 40 gold...so to get 100 gold a day I'd have to do that and win 18 fights a day? I don't know if I have the time for that.
And now i'm playing the dreaded aggresive shaman with bloodlust and the 4 mana cost 7/7 from WoG along with a Thing From Below that has taunt and costs 1 less for each totem previously summoned.
Don't hate me. Just trying to earn some coins and buy some packs.

One does not simply walk into Mordor,
unless they want to be the best they can be.
Yeah I don't have to be great with the standard recommended priest deck I found, just better than all the other new people.
I would say don't craft anything for a good few months. Any crafting decisions you make while you're still new are very likely to be bad ones you'll regret. Just grow your collection organically either by buying packs or playing arena.

Thanks again everyone. I have a direction. It was really helpful as there isn't an easy "to get started" type of page, at least not one that I found.
