So I left this game completely disenfranchised with the secret Pali debacle and honestly, didn't think I'd ever come back to it. I am glad I did come back because I'm enjoying the immensely again but I missed all the news, updates and blue posts for months and haven't been able to find answers to this.
1) cards rotate out every 2 years. Does this mean on jan 1 or will they rotate expansions out when new ones come in?
2) Have they said anything about reprinting cards? They kind of did it with the ghouls but this ghoul is a warrior only card. My main concern is with emperor thaurissan. my favorite decks to play are combo decks and without him, a lot of combo decks simply won't work.
1. they will rotate when new expansion rolls out, so for example every spring they will release a new expansion I think and then they roate out old sets. after 2 years ofc.
2. They are not going to reprint cards as far as we know.
1. each year's rotation will kick in with the first new expansion. Thus the whole "stuff comes out as stuff comes in" event will occur regularly.
2. They said they have no plans on reprinting cards, but they are keeping all optiosn o nthe table as this is a new situation for them and they aren't sure what they'll need to do as the years go on. Note that the system they are modeling, MTG, reprints, but doesn't have an 'evergreen' set. Classic is meant to make it so that we don't have to have reprints. That could mean things like having cards from an expansion move into the classic set.
Note though that the entire point to formats is to force people to find new decks and strategies and not hang on the same thing over and over. Thus cards like Emperor, which are key components of certain deck types, are probably exactly the kind of card that is cuasing the rotation system in the first place. Simply put, the deck you are playing 2 years from now shouldn't look anything close to what it looks like now.
Thanks for the replies, that clears some things up. When will Emperor rotate out then? I'm debating whether to craft velen for an otk priest but without emperor that deck would be decimated.
Everything that released last year will be gone next year with the first expansion.
That includes everything in BRM, TGT, and LoE. So not just Emperor, but also Challenger, Anyfin, and Reno.
What will remain next year will be Old Gods, Classic/Basic (which blizzard suspects will face another revamp), and whatever they release afterwards (which, iirc, will consist of another expansion and adventure this year and the first 2017 expansion).
Thanks again for clearing that up. I'll definitely be crafting velen soon then seeing I have a whole year to play a deck I know I'll like. If it dropped off when the next adventure hit I wouldnt have bothered.
Interestingly I was in the opposite boat. I was all set to craft Vo'jin as mynext legendary. Then, befoer I got enough dust, the announcement came in.. the one people scream about was too early. Because it came in time, I avoided making a legendary I wouldn't be using after 2 months.
And instead I have enough dust to make every legendary I'd want in Old Gods if I wanted to. :D
So does this mean the adventure and 2nd expansion will see less time before rotating out?
For example, let's say this year the sets are scheduled on:
Expansion 1 - April 2016
Adventure - August 2016
Expansion 2 - November 2016
Assuming next 2 years they have the same release schedule, the sets would have the following duration:
Expansion 1 - 2 years
Adventure - 1 year 8 months
Expansion 2 - 1 year 5 months
So in essence, the later sets would have less time in standard compared to the first?
Pretty much. The sets at the start of the year will last longer than the sets at the end of the year .
It's messy but the alternative is to have a set fall off with every new addition so that they get the same 'amount of time'. That might be too much to plan around, development wise and too much chaos player wise.
Might be. Note that everyone, blizzard included are sort of playing this by ear and seeing what sticks. They HAVE said they are willing to change/revamp/gut this whole thing to make it work if parts, or all of it, doesn't work.
That's something else to remember. Blizzard has made it clear that NOTHING is absolutely set in stone. The way the system works now isn't 'their baby' that they will defend from the 'mean players'. This is an experiment in a way that they are expecting to be partially wrong and will need to be fixed over time. That gose for everything from the evergreen set, the time periods, what goes in and out, and what happens to the old cards over time. Everything can and will change if need be.
Thanks again for clearing that up. I'll definitely be crafting velen soon then seeing I have a whole year to play a deck I know I'll like. If it dropped off when the next adventure hit I wouldnt have bothered.
you're aware you will still be able to play it in Wild though?
Yes, but wild will be the exception and I won't dust cards but it's not the "standard" format. Wild is just going to be a for fun format. Shit, I might see secret pali's in there, the whole reason I got disgusted with the game in the first place.
To answer Jack, I take some of this to mean that there will be 1 xpac first every year, followed by 2 adventures. Who knows though, I guess nothing is set in stone
Thanks, see, I'm totally out of the loop. It's too much to find but this thread caught me up nicely on the things I wanted to know. Thanks for all the replies.

One does not simply walk into Mordor,
unless they want to be the best they can be.

I believe Emperor rotates out next year
