Alextraza is most disappointing to me, since it can apply to future design so much as well. Now Old God decks can also follow the stall/draw/Alexstraza/Old God win/tell therapist you had human interaction even though you did everything to avoid it pattern.
The fact that mage is not getting any nerfs at all is also something that worries me quite a bit. They slowed down aggro by lowering some of the neutral minions and cutting into charge.
Its hard to say because we have not seen all of the set or any results moving forward but freeze mage might be just freaking terrible moving forward.
I know, right? Freeze mage is losing mad scientist and healbot, and that's it. And healbot is not even such a big deal given that the new Cult Apothecary should work best in a deck that does what freeze mage does. Scientist is a different subject, that is true, there is no replacement for it at all.
I really hope we get a statement from blizz on this, because I no interest in playing a format if it's only freeze mage and warrior decks.
Dont underestimate the impact Mad Scientist leaving standard will have. Now that mages have to both find and play all their secrets on top of Eater of Secrets being a good card will mean that freeze mage will be very vulnerable,
Don't forget that Freeze Mage gets eaten by Secret Eater.
Do you really think people will run Eater of Secrets? I mean, it's even worst than Kezan Mystic against secretless classes, such a big commitment, especially because secret pally shouldn't be a thing in standard with avenge gone.
Not to mention the loss of Loatheb and even Dr. Boom (I've lost the count of games won because the mage player plays Doomsayer and I counter with boom, making the bombs kill him through ice block.
Don't forget that Freeze Mage gets eaten by Secret Eater.
I won't put a 4 mana 2/4 in my deck just to play against mage.
If freeze mage becomes a powerhouse you will. That's how meta's work, and how tech cards are used. For a long time Kezan Mystic was run which is a worse version in many ways.

When a single card can guarantee you a win in a specific matchup, yes it will be run as a one of in most decks. Against freeze mage Eater of Secrets deals 8 damages and removes their main strength of surviving an extra turn. This will single handedly win against freeze mage.

That's a best case scenario, but I agree that in such case it would pretty much assure the win. Maybe you're right... I hope you are...
But wouldn't mages just play around that never playing 2 secrets? Idk... feels a little optimistic.

So... am I missing something or is freeze mage going to be the boogie monster in standard?
I mean... no nerf to Alexstrasza or any of the classic class cards, like Ice Block. Seriously, please say I'm missing something.
The boogie monster as in the thing everyone will fear? Or as in the terrible new legendary card? Am confuzzled.
Instructions unclear, head stuck in mill rogue.
I returned to this game much like how a recovering alcoholic can relapse.

CCGing since '98.

Mage is losing Flamecannon, big trouble for surviving early game or keeping anything on the board.
Free to try and find a game, dealing cards for sorrow, cards for pain.
Losing Healbot, Mad Scientist and Flamecannon hits them a bit but it will still be around for sure.
Eater of Secrets might be a good tech if Mage and Mysterious Challenger (without Avenge) stick around.
