This is not really true. I just fooled around a bit with a steward of darkshire deck that had a sword of justice in it and steward doesn't give divine shield to the minions because they get buffed by the sword before her ability triggers.
It's likely that "after you summon" and "whenever you summon" trigger at the same time, despite the different wording. At present, I would guess that you played Sword of Justice before Steward of Darkshire . But it might be that the unconditional sword just prevents the Steward from triggering. Interesting point, I will test that when I can.
But that doesn't really have anything to do with the difference between "play" and "summon", does it?
So I tested it. The results are a little bit weird. I played first the Steward and then sword of justice. This works fine if I play the minions from my hand. However, if I summon a silver hand recruit with the hero power, somehow the Sword of justice triggers first.
I have enclosed 2 screenshots. On the first one, you see that the heropower recruit is buffed, but has no divine shield. On the second one, I played a stonetusk boar (right after the recruit) which is buffed and has divine shield. I don't get it, since the recruits get their divine shield, when I am not haveing a sword of justice equipped.

Same results here, at times the recruit from the hero power gets buffed without the divine shield, even though I have played Steward of Darkshire the previous turn .

The "Aura Update (Health/Attack)" step of summon resolution occurs before the "Aura Update (other)" step. This is why the Sword goes first when both are processed during the same phase.
They are NOT processed simultaneously when you PLAY a minion, because there is an extra summon resolution step that causes "whenever you summon" to happen before "after you summon."
When you summon (but do not PLAY) a minion, "whenever" and "after" auras are both handled in the after-summon phase, giving the Sword's aura priority because it is (Health/Attack), whereas Steward's is (Other).
It's complicated and weird, but that's how it happens. I think.
