With the plan to expand to a Wild and Standard format and old sets becoming obsolete in standard, there is no doubt the problem of losing some excellently designed cards in standard.
I'm guessing the plan to mitigate this is to design a replacement card that is close, but not quite the same. I guess that does keep the content fresh, but still there are some cards I'm really going to miss that don't need any tweaking.
Would the devs ever consider migrating a card from an obsolete expansion into the classic set instead? Perhaps they could even involve the HS community through a voting process?
I don't have the source, but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that over time they would think about adding a few cards from the expansions into the classic set.
He said in a tweet somewhere that they'd consider making some cards that people really love that rotate out into basic cards. It's a older post so idk if I could find it. He did mention that they probably wouldn't do stuff like Sludge Belcher though.
I figure reprints are inevitable at some point in the future, but it might be a while away yet.
If they make new cards that are similar to old Wild cards, that will fill the gaps in Standard when they need them. (I don't count the corrupted cards we've seen so far in this category, because they're all mechanically very different from the originals.) But for some cards, that could cause problems because it might break the Wild metagame if players have access to effectively 4 of the same card. In those cases, it makes more sense to simply re-print the same card in a new expansion. There are tons of examples of that in MtG.
Do remember, though, that the purpose of formatting is to make sure that decks rotate OUT of the system in due time and to eliminate stagnation. Thus any card that is key for a particular deck will NOT go into Classic. Jeesh, they are nerfing classic cards specifically TO remove the key for a deck cards that exist there now.
Thus I can see Loatheb being an option, but not, say, Patron, or Quartermaster. Basically, decks should have a 2 year lifespan before they need to be radically redesigned in their mentality or outright gone from the scene.

If that's the case, it would be nice if we did not have to re-craft them if we already own them.
To add to that, it would throw a bone to some of the HS faithful.
And allowing a voting element to what's brought in and out would sure be fun. For example, they list a set of cards they are considering rotating in. They poll the community on which they'd most like to see. Just an idea.
rather not have that honestly . I wouldn't trust the wide community with anything like that.
Besides, it's not like there's only so many 'slots' that we need to decide on. If it's decided that Loatheb or Justicar can both be in the base set then there's no point in the community decided whether to keep one or the other when you can just add both in.
What goes into Classic should depend on what it'll mean for the meta and the design teams. I can see them asking us for advice or information and listening to us on teh forums and the like. But an arbitrary vote for the 'fun' of it just sounds like a unnecissary nightmare.
I have no idea what Blizzard's plans are, but what I would do in 2-3 years is rotate out the classic set and introduce 2 new sets: A core set of all new cards and a reprint set. The reprint set would contain all old cards I'd like to pull back into standard. Split set because veterans will be pissed if they have a 50% chance to pull a card they already have right from the start.

Brode has voiced against the straight reprinting of cards. The corruption of cards is about as good as you'll get.
Wants to play Captain Cookie Druid because why not?

One does not simply walk into Mordor,
unless they want to be the best they can be.
