I think instead of adding chat just give players a bunch more options of emotes and they can choose which ones they want, so for example a 12 emote pool and you choose which 6 you go armed into (verbal) battle with. For example, something like enjoy the game, or hurry up, or laugh, or some other variations of well played like good job, maybe good game for the end of game, maybe even your welcome if you play deathknight and dancing swords or whatever.
On the chat topic tho, I agree with the 'if you think you can handle it you can sign up', and then hope people will be good enough to not BM and toxic sh*t talk and all that. Also sending your daily quests to the opponent so that you can earn some gold faster in casual mode by telling them you have a quest then showing them the quest and if they don't have a quest they let you win or whatever. But hearthstone is too toxic for cooperative stuff like that. There should be a day where all people do is concede and you play as decks you need to win as for quests and you get all of your quests done before T1 starts cos everyone is conceding
I was really curious what my opponent had to say yesterday when he invited me as friend, but I felt it was safer to decline.
We played the not so rare Secret Paladin vs Midrange Druid encounter. After I cleared most of his board with some nice Coghammer combo, then preceded to draw about 6 cards with Divine Favour, it seemed like he exploded, did the Threaten emote 4 times in a row and kept spamming.
And he is playing the nr.1 meta deck, like what does he have to complain about..
For me, if I was about to win I'd totally roleplay Yami Yugi in this scene.
Talk online? What for? Some people will hide in the anonymity of the internet and say things they would never say in person. That's one of the main reasons I enjoy MtG more than HS, I can interact with the other player in person and discuss the game afterwards. Playing in person has the tendency of making people behave better. I think that's one of the reason why some of the HS community is so toxic since they are hiding behind the innernets.

Great art can never be created without great suffering.
I would seriously consider dropping Hearthstone if in-game chat was a thing. The current setup with emotes and friends list chat is fine. Nothing good ever comes from in-game chat with strangers.
Even if my opponent is playing some kind of rediculous Aggro list, sometimes I try to add them as a friend afterwords to compliment they're list. Especially if it's something I haven't seen before. Like "Dude you're aggro Mage list is dank"
Game from today: I had 1 hp, my opponent had 15 or so. the turn before I had like 20 hp and he brought out cenarious and buffed like 4 other minions and attacked directly, attacked me directly and left my 3 minions alone. He then ends his turn and emotes sorry. Was so obvious it was just shit talk but I had an ace up my sleeve. I say sorry back and use bloodlust. Attack him directly and have barely enough atk to win the game. He adds me immediately after. To me, it was so obvious he just wanted to talk shit. This sort of thing happens all the time.

I've done this before too, I think the problem is since the Hearthstone community seems to think Aggro equates to you being a bad player or even worse possibly the most morally corrupt person on the planet at that given moment... I'm sure they've been conditioned not to accept.
I got wrecked by a Hobgoblin Mech Warrior a long time ago and tried to add them to compliment them and ask for the list and was turned down. When the weird vitriol for Aggro dies off maybe people will accept. :(

Articles I suggest every player reads to improve at the game;
Game would be toxic as fck if that was possible, possibly even more than LoL.
I don't think I'd have to say anything, one emote basically covers all that I want to say: OBLIVION!
Why?. I played Might and Magic Duel of Champions for two years, it has a chat, and I made lots of friends due to the chat. Barely met any toxic player.

It's not a massively popular game. Any competitive game that attracts the masses, especially those involving teamplay with random people, is bound to get toxicity through the roof.
Borderlands, Dark Souls, fighting games in general (kinda)... All of them have great, non-toxic communities as well.
Most of my friends list is composed of people I added to compliment them on their non-typical decklists post game. Got rekt by Curse of Rafaam lethal? Gotta give kudos for a stylish finish. Managed to beat some kind of weird deathrattle paladin? Gotta thank them for not playing secret and for the creativity.

Apparently, Hearthpwn won't save your signature if it's empty.

Also note that different communities breed different mentalities. We aren't the M&M community. We are a Blizzard community. I rank us as somewhere between Youtube commenters and Xbox FPS voice chatters.
Chat is a nice thing to have for most communities. We, OTOH, can't have nice things here.
I'll probably call them out for their retardo mode luck. like top decking the innervate to do force double roar. The fact of the matter is that people are shit at this game, however. by some miraculous creation, decks that just have a high win rate were born. So i'd sit there just bming every shit play they made and every time they top deck boom to save their game.
Probably the most obnoxious thing i've ever seen. Me playing an over 7 attack minion, them top decking bgh and fallowing up with dr. boom. Like lets be real. There is no out play there, they played every move like shit up until that point and that luck swung them game. And id call them out on robbing the game and that they will never get to legend because they only win games that they can barely rob.

I would legitimately ask what deck they're playing if I haven't figured it out already.
Oh, and, say stuff like "You know, I expected you to do a thing, but okay :c"
I would love to change medivh's emote. He's too boring
I would swear a lot more. Also the OP video: BGH says hello
Maybe i will jz say the quotes of the minions I play.
To be honest, I would just call people P2W when they pull out legendaries I don't have even if they are F2P

enough BM just with the emotes to my mind ...

they get me mad using 1-2 emotes.. but if I cooooould, I'd say: "hurry up, friend, don't be a murloc, your stinky dirty little.." oops
that's why I can't
