I've heard a lot of people complaining about the mechanic lately and I'm also annoyed by it a bit so a random thought occurred to me (and I wouldn't be surprised if other people brought this up already).
Silence by default should last only until the start of the player's next turn. This already would help taunt minions against aggro a lot considering that the aggro face deck has to deal with the minion otherwise the taunt just comes back (unless it's to finish off the game) and they have to waste multiple slots for multiple silences, and only Owl would be cost effective. This also leaves room to distinguish between temporary and permanent silence to make use of some other cards. Specifically Light's Champion would make a lot more sense if his effect would be permanent unlike Ironbeak Owl's.
So I'd say Ironbeak Owl, Earth Shock, Spellbreaker, Silence and Keeper of the Grove would be much more acceptable with their silence only lasting one turn, to remove a deathrattle, divine shield, attack a minion like Gurabashi Berserker or the new Corrupted Hogger and something like that.

Who is complaining about silence, and why?
Most long playing members who are annoyed buy it ruining everything (aka fun). It's a shit mechanic.
And if you really need a recent example, Noxious mentioned it in the WoG video. If you need an older one, look up the Bolvar or the face hunter threads and Keeper discussions.
That's ridiculous, I am a long playing member and I think it's absolutely fine. Everyone has access to it and you rarely find more than two silences in any given deck anyway... If anything they could introduce a mechanic which reverses silence effects.
If silence shouldbe be temporary then Big Game Hunter should be temporary as well
Ignoring your poor attempt, that the general consensus... And it's being hinted at that BGH is getting nerfed because it's design limiting. I don't see how the currently used silences are any more design friendly since they flat out deny fun or necessary effects and work too well in the decks that can abuse them the most, meanwhile making other cards not used because they are just worse.
I'm not sure that it should be temporary, but some way to remove it (or more likely to actually see play: to restore the original abilities of the card) would be nice.
Well on YuGiOh there are cards that have that effect that negate the card effect so u can get enough time to find a way to deal with that minion that u dont have resources to deal in this turn, if that was implemented i believe it would be fair, because erase a card text is just too powerfull, maybe owl would negate the effect for the opponent next turn and higher cost silence effects would negate for more turns
if we where to "correct" all unfun things in the game thay can also limit the amount of Armor stacable, and sadly half priest card pool( for me priest is fun but i understad other people think otherwise)
I don't agree that the Silence mechanic is currently an overpowered mechanic, but I do believe it negatively effects the way cards are designed (In the same way Big Game Hunter/Cabal Shadow Priestetc do)
Well no one mentioned it being overpowered, just annoying and whatnot. The rest of what you said is the gist of it.

Yeah, I thought about that too, but mechanically that seem more confusing (silence for silence? What is getting restored ect). Plus you're adding a really pointless effects to the game then.

No, its also limiting design but rather from the other side compared to Big Game Hunter
BGH limits Minions with 7atk plus just as silence limits design aka, people play avoid, anticipate them. Same concept/issue different category

Skill Drain?! You're suggesting Hearthstone gets Skill Drain? No please,I don't wanna have to quit another card game..... What the OP is suggesting seems fair to me,silencing for 1 turn should be enough to deal with the majority of the cards.... I bet it's not happening though, too good to be true....
i was thinking about more in the breakthrougharmor kind of way that negate the effect for the turn only, the way the silence is on Hearthstone is already like a skill drain, card like mass dispel do that already, i think silence should be a mechanic only available for priest that have classic cards that focus on that and making that class good with that and not every deck having that ability, and silence for every deck limit the creation of any buff mechanic kind of way because the fear of buffing that minion and just getting a huge silence that turn the game around

yea forgot the card name, that is the effect i wanted, the same way freeze effect make the minion impossible to atack for that turn, the silence effect would have the same mechanic even tho buffs would still get silenced and cards like Edwin and Twilight Drake would still be weak, but cards with deathrattle would need to be killed on the same turn of the silence
Considering that there aren't THAT many silence cards, really there's no reason to take away that mechanic - well no reason unless you're an entitled millennial who just needs to complain about everything on a forum all day long. That would be the ONE exception.

While Mass Dispel, Wailing Soul and Light's Champion could stay permanent silences.
I understand that the effect itself actually just removes a status and isn't one itself, but they should be able to change that.

Maybe the minion could be silenced for as long a the minion that silenced it is on the field (IDK about spells though)
-It says "Signature" so here it is.
Meh

Or you have to pay 3 mana to reverse your silenced minion
