So my friend is starting a tournament where everyone is building a mage deck with 29 standard cards and 1 wild card. It's going to be set as wild on the deck format though so I can discover wild mage cards. Here's my deck so far without any wild cards.
Could you guys lend me any advice on which wild card to run and what I should change with my deck? Also, I run living dragonbreath to stop frost nova and albatross to stop highlander decks I would appreciate any tips whatsoever.
So I updated the deck a little and my main goal was to get as much value as possible while trying to withstand albatross and aggro. Is there anything I'm missing? Keep in mind I'm only allowed 1 wild card and I chose Reno.
Your list is very strange. It doesn't include some good cards, but includes some medicore ones - Brightwing (wtf?), Magic Trick... I'd say just take a standard Highlander that is proven to be working and cut one card for one of the two abovementioned.
Unless you are intentionally going for a "fun" deck, then oh well.
Im just picking brightwing for the chance for wild legendaries and magic trick to discover wild spells cuz its set in the wild format with the chance to discover wild spells so do you have any ideas for substitutes?
-I would for sure just go standard highlander mage and drop a reno jackson, easy decision. If you don't want to go that route not sure what else could work, no other mage deck is realistically good enough on standard to even be a consideration. I guess you could also consider a control deck with Jaina DK on top but there aren't enough solid cards on standard for that deck to be better than reno mage.
**EDIT: Wow just checked the list you posted and it looks terrible, you're running a bunch of bad cards, you're overthinking way to much about the whole wild synergy thing, running stuff like Brightwing and Magic Trick and Messenger Raven. There are an insane amount of terrible legendaries and wild just makes that pool even bigger, the chance of you highrolling one good legendary is not good enough for you to run a bad card like brightwing. The spell pool is less terrible but there are still very bad choices for magic trick. Raven is prolly the least shitty of this bunch as there are ok mage minions but there are still a bunch of terrible ones, again, not solid enough to justify the highroll you might never get.
Also cards like Counterspell, Youthful Brewer are terrible. You're again overthinking about bouncing minions but that isn't a good play and counterspell is just bad honestly. Evocation is another example of a bad card for this deck. Reno mage often has big hands and once more you're trying too hard to generate random wild stuff that might be terrible.
You're playing an standard tournament, running 1 wild card changes nothing, you'll be facing the standard meta so just run a good standard deck and add Reno Jackson, he's for sure the better card. A random card is rarely better than good cards in your deck, that goes for any format in any card game. Just run this list https://www.vicioussyndicate.com/decks/student-highlander-mage/ and cut either Transfer Student (not sure if the effects for wild boards are good enough) or Ruststeed Raider (Again check for the effect student can get on wild boards as they might be bad and he would be the card to cut).
As I said, you're playing an standard tournament, one card won't make a difference in terms of the meta, it'll just give decks the chance to run one bonkers card while taking out the worst card in their standard deck.
**EDIT 2: Just checked the effects of Transfer Student for wild decks and most of them are meh, nothing that justifies keeping this is the deck. There is also a terrible one. The kobolds board gives you the Battlecry of recruiting a minion that costs 2 or less from your deck. You only have Solarian, Doomsayer and Zep for that. The only good card to consistently pull is Solarian. Doomsayer might be good ocasionally but it can also be terrible sometimes and Zep is obviosly never good and just that alone kills that card. So cut the student for sure. It's better to run a card that's at least decent in most match-ups (Raider) than one that is meh most of the times, is good some few times but is also absolutely dead if you happen to get the Kobolds board.
Personally I’d experiment with quest for a cyclone mage to try and kill with varogoth plus mana giants. If you want to go the highlander route then Jaina, reno, possibly even luna’s pocket galaxy. Try to keep in mind what your opponents could take as their wild card as well to help you decide.
I get why you would want to do that yugi but I think your reasoning is not strong enough to run Brightwing or Magic Trick - it goes without saying that wild is a much bigger set than standard and so while it does have some Hall of Fame cards or (something on the edge of OP), it also has a lot more terrible cards. Those are the cards you are most likely going to be given.
HOWEVER, personally I would still run Brightwing for the M E M E S . It's one of my favourite cards :).
Some of these should surely be included, imho every single one of them (maybe apart from Mysteries, but only if you drop a secret as well, and Puzzle Box - but it wins you unwinnable games).
Thinking about it more I would probably go Frost Lich Jaina. When death knights were in standard who played Frost Lich Jaina first often times decided the winner in mirror matches.
Considering that's an only mage tournament, most people would probably run Highlander Mage. It's a Value deck, so I would pick Kazakus over Reno Jackson.
Do you think frost lich jana would do better than the amazing reno hero?
Obviously, Jaina is top 3 best hero card of all time.
What the fuck? I mean, I don't know how the Standard meta is, so maybe Jaina is favored there, but the Amazing Reno is the superior hero imo. And, even if it was better, it wouldn't be worth taking up the one wild card slot just for a slightly better card.
I get that the poof board clear is amazing but if I get the warlock card that discards all cards in my hand I'm screwed and I get that its just 1 cards but it seems like reno afterwards seems very risky in the wild format

Umm, why no Kalecgos in the deck? You are running dragons and he is a standard card.
I would probably run a highlander deck. For the single wild card I would consider Ice Block, Reno Jackson, and Frost Lich Jaina.
What about the extra turn quest card?
I would probably run a highlander mage with Reno Jackson
Keymaster Alabaster come faster
Play standard Highlander Mage with Frost Lich Jaina.

Reno or Frost Lich Jaina, without a doubt.

Rolling Fireball, Ancient Mysteries (since you are running a Secret package), Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron, Arcane Breath, Astromancer Solarian

I think Reno Jackson is the best option for default standard highlander mage. With your cheap spells (in Tournament deck v2.0) I would use Ancient Mysteries and Archmage Antonidas.
Personally I would try to create defensive fatigue highlander mage with Frost Lich Jaina
I also like:
Cyclone mage with Open the Waygate
Cyclone mage with Flamewaker
Spellmage with Aluneth

Jaina will do better IF you can play it and not die. (then siamat or geddon and you have full life)
But mages don't have much healing in standard right now.
