Since profits are the ONLY reason any for-profit company exists, there is definitely a huge opportunity cost in generating goodwill through giveaways, especially in this case.
And let's not forget acts of real kindness (aka good will) are just a waste of time for a company. They just don't work.
just thought it would have been nice and giving out a free pack even from an earlier expansion would have been cool. i think it would have been a nice gesture as kind of a thank you for still playing our game. let's be real here giving out 1 free pack to every player would not hurt blizzard's wallet in any way. and i'm not saying i expected it or anything it just would have been a nice pleasant surprise for everybody. so everybody saying i'm greedy or asking for thanos must hate themselves. you would have gotten a free pack too. imagine if all company's actually spread some joy for once instead of being all about the money.

EVERY giveaway impacts the bottom line. Every single one.
The only time a giveaway is justified is when trying to drum up hype for a new expansion. Christmas hype will fade long before then.
Is the "joy" you gain from your 40 dust now going to be remembered in April? Will you look back fondly and say to yourself, "You know, these guys were really nice to me at Christmastime. I think I'll return the favor by buying two packs more than I normally would."
So maybe I won't call you greedy (though if you claim a free pack will bring you joy, you might want to look inside yourself a bit harder), but I will say that your assumptions about Blizzard's wallet are incorrect and the whole "Christmas spirit" angle is pretty naive.

"Why, you never expected justice from a company, did you? They have neither a soul to lose nor a body to kick." -- Lady Saba Holland
I perfectly know how digital items work (I'm developing my own games), DiamondDM13, no reason to explain me that again. ;) But with all due respect (not trying to offend you, really) believing that others would considere things the same way as you do is a huge mistake from your part. If I learned something from people through all this years, is that a huge percentage of them don't really understand the concept of good will, they can't just grasp it, it is completely alien to them, because well, it's hard to believe in good intentions when you are just a piece of shit!!! ;)
Yeah, Blizzard looks like an absurdly greedy company for many of their customers right now, but if this company would have decided to give away free stuff for Christmas they wouldn't end up looking as people of good will (at least not for many out there), they would end up looking as f..king fools!!! Yeah, freaking f...king fools!!! Because there is no difference between being stupid and a good person for an asshole, and that my friend, that's a fact!!! Life for them is about who is the most tricky and clever, that's all; any act of kindness is seen by them as sheer stupidity and weakness. It's sad and pathetic, as if it were just a concept taken from a comic book, but believe me, it's the truth, many times reality exceeds fiction. ;)
Blizzard acted wisely this time and I'm obviously not saying all people are assholes. It's just that being seen as a greedy bastard by everyone is much better than being seen as a stupid by many. ;)
I never said I considered it that way, I explained the rationale behind it. Also, the reason it's hard to believe in good intentions is because we are living in a time when there is a lot of violation of human rights taking place, even in advanced countries, which are being ignored yet subconsciously create distrust in people. If subconsciously you are observing people getting their rights violated, including yourself, but this is not actually something you feel like you can talk about, it is really hard to believe in good intentions, your eyes show otherwise. (Not to mention, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. That is a problem when you have people thinking the ends justify the means.)
Obviously, I cannot approach politics further here, against the rules, one can always go to PMs, but let's just say, when you are reminded every single month by the Government that you are their slave, that they own your labor and as such, decide how much, if any, you get to keep for yourself, for example, that has a problematic effect on your mindset, as it should.
Yes, bad people look at good will as something to take advantage of. That fact doesn't change the other fact, that they look greedy. Question is, which do you think is better to have your costumers see you as. Most people won't see you as stupid just because you decide to give away stuff in accordance with timed events, they see it as a nice, symbolic gesture, which is what you want it to come off as.
At the cost of losing many customers because now my company is a symbolism of weakness and stupidity??? No f...king way!!! You would be very surprised if you knew how many people out there buy and consume products just for what they mean, the brand, the company that makes them and the things they are associated with, rather for what they really are. :( And yeah, such a thing applies totally to video games too.

Oh, and I have for you a perfect recent example of such a thing, my dear DiamondDM13: F..king Hideo Kojima and his shitty and repulsive Death Stranding. ;)
Hordes of people/fanboys buying a stupid delivery/walking simulator (especially in Japan) just for who made it and how this person treats people in general. Yeah, Kojima is nothing else than an arrogant bastard, and guess what??? Many out there love his personality. They love it so much that considere him some kind of genius, almost a divine entity, LMAO!!! XD
Compared to other games I have played in my life (since we the gaming community somehow lost control of the concept: “One time purchase for a full content game” and started paying subscription fees on the first few games out for online play like Ultima Online or World of Warcraft and the like I truly feel like hearthstone is one of the cheapest out there, especially in the mobile gaming arena.
They do already give us quite a few free packs just with quests and tavern brawls alone.
As to it being already produced digital content and thus free to recreate as a Christmas pack without any cost or the argument against that notion:
If I discovered the actual alchemist recipe to make gold and stored it as a digital document I don’t think it should be looked at as something requiring my investment or not when determining if I shared it at all. Also I think the idea that me hoarding that would be weak or stupid or wise or any of the arguments against sharing it shouldn’t be applied since it would be my asset and it’s impossible to know every thought in my mind about what to do with said content so to view Blizzard as anything different than any individual with an idea or invention etc that they could or could not share freely is not how a company should be viewed. We do not have the information available they have to make the decision for them and even if they just didn’t because they didn’t want to doesn’t allow us reason to assign some possibly false description of stupid or wise to said decision. If I figure out how to make gold I am not gonna come post that shit on here. Why doesn’t Microsoft give Windows 10 out freely on Christmas? It’s already developed and it’s digital and has zero costs.
The idea of hearthstone packs being cheaper than what they are which is basically 1 per day or one every couple days free seems wildly too low to think you will attract more business vs the model they use now. Even if everything were lower priced it would go back to your same falsity about the sell of digital goods. You can’t justly say if the prices were lower demand would increase for use of your own logic
You have conveniently ignored the basis of the entire Hearthstone economy in order to make your specious point.
Giving away packs in this game is the same as giving away dust, and dust can be used to create product. Not just present product, but future product as well.
So yes, every giveaway does in fact cut a chunk out of future sales. It doesn't matter if you are a free player or a paying one; the more dust you have, the more cards you can get without paying when the next expansion drops. That means it is harder for the company to recoup production costs, leading to reduced profits. When the game doesn't generate enough profit, the shareholders question the value of their stock, and the game gets canceled.
Since profits are the ONLY reason any for-profit company exists, there is definitely a huge opportunity cost in generating goodwill through giveaways, especially in this case.
You seem to have overlooked what I already talked about regarding the fallacy of lost sales. It is a fallacy to believe that what you are giving away would have otherwise been a purchase. You aren't guaranteed that giveaway would have been a purchase, meaning you aren't actually losing revenue.
It's absolutely true that some people will never buy cards, ever.
But it's also absolutely true that many people will -- otherwise you don't have an income at all and the game goes under.
Therefore, yes, I can absolutely guarantee that in many cases, the giveaway would have been a purchase. The dust generated by the giveaway is exactly the same as store credit. A person who was going to buy a bunch of cards from the next expansion will now purchase fewer cards because Blizzard already gave them a bunch of dust.
Even though I had terrible luck with legendaries this time, I personally had to buy a lot fewer cards for DoD than I normally do, thanks to accumulated dust -- and every bit of that extra dust (beyond the duplicate dust from this expansion) came from giveaways.
10 bucks says he snaps his fingers and you get dusted then i colect it and craft a legendary. oops sorry common my mistake you're only worth 40 dust
your name is a childish fuckname killanator and you make a lot of mistakes in your few words. IQ40 goatfucker, stay ouit of the internet please. You would be worth nothing fucking dumb child :D

dude i made killanator up when i was like 16 and playing halo 3 so ofcourse it's a childish fuckname it's supposed to be. you're the prime example of why the internet is a shitty place hating on someone for no reason just because you can hidden behind a screen. but it's cool dude. wg15 is a way cooler and much more sophisticated name anyways. 2 letters and 2 numbers now what genius could have thought that up. a lame ass terminator play on words just doesn't stand "ouit" in comparison. fuckin' dick head :P (emoji)
I dont understand what the problem is. Blizzard let you and anyone else play a game they spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on developing for free. Not only that, they give you rewards for playing so you actually have the chance to never have to spend money on the game at all. But wait there's more: over the last few expansions they have given all players free packs and legendaries just for logging on. They recently gave every single player not 1, not 2, not 3 but 5 FREE legendaries when DoD launched.
But yes, how greedy they are for not giving you anything for Xmas. Bastards the lot of 'em.
