I've only been playing 6 months and I lack good cards and dust. As my welcome to the game, some of my limited first legendary cards were Millhouse, Hi'reek and Flark's Boom-Zooka. But I am still here. I've hit rank 13 the last 2 months. I am not new to strategy card games, just Hearthstone.
I did buy 100 packs of DoD as a kickstart. I got Dragonqueen as one of my DoD Lengendaries and really love it. I also have some strange affinity for Mage (sigh).
So I am considering using my limited dust to get Zephy's and start making a go at Highlander Mage. I have 1600 dust and could get another 3200 or so cleaning house. I'd like to get your thoughts on the top cards I should focus on to make this as usable as possible.
I also want to give you the chance to talk me out of it if Highlander Mage will not be competitive in Standard and/or steer me away from Zephyr if Highlander in general will be a tough go.
Zephys if you don’t have him regardless of class is probably one of the most significant cards in the game if not the most significant but wait and see other opinions
At the beginning of the Update before DoD, I would have go with DarkSage for 100%. Now, I mostly do as well, but....The next weeks will show up best decks, big changes are possible in that time - In my opinion Zephys will be still useful. It fits in so many decks. Usually I do try to work with the cards I received, to safe crafting for decks I really do love for a long term, and need to fill it up with one more legendary or so.... Well, to be honest, I pretty much break my own rule every new update, at least. It is way more fun to start with a deck of big consistance.
It is kinda ur own decision. You could try play it without Zephys a day or some hours. Maybe you dont even like the decks very much. I understand you paid many and dont want to feel like wasted. But even if you are not using the legendary you got, you dont need to bother you bought it, cause you so many rar, normals, etc. so you have faster dust, less craft costs, big variety....
Enjoy man, dont spend to much time about a single card. If you really feel like do it, 1600 dust more or less, wont change your life quality^^If u still not sure, play some games, try other decks, and decide if you feel more sure about
I am indeed trying out a Highlander Dragon Mage deck with what I have so far to get a feel for it. Board clear might still be a tough point, though the new Rolling Fireball and Malygos AoM are proving to be good assists. Using Dragoncaster for board clear spells helps a bunch too. So if I go ahead, I am guessing Reno the Relicologist would be up there too to help with this. Unfortunately, unlike Zephyr, Reno is locked to Mage so more limiting.
Both are recent sets so I don't have to worry about them rotating out soon. But I'd drain most of my dust doing so. Thought it was best to get feedback before jumping in.
No solid reason... for some reason I am just drawn to Mage. Looking at Highlander Hunter decks, I seem even lighter on those key cards. I will certainly consider it.
Going to get some more ranked matches in with my Highlander Dragon Mage deck in for data points before investing. So far I am loving it.
I've been trying Highlander Dragon Paladin (without new alex tho, not gonna craft it yet) and Highlander Dragon Mage seems way stronger - more ways to cheat mana and availability of AoE is pretty strong. (rank 5 btw, dropped from 3 xD)
Highlander Mage is possibly the most expensive deck in the game at the moment. It has 10 legendaries, which equals 16000 dust. Just for 10 cards. Total cost may go near 20000, if not more later. And it's not even refined, and may not even be great, as everyone is just memeing and experimenting.
You're not gonna even come close to the deck with just 4800 dust unless you have been extremely lucky with the Mage class and have most of it or at least some very important pieces already (like the Dragonqueen).
Also, while the cost of the deck can increase, it could also decrease. So I'd suggest waiting for at least a week (to not say the month, really) to see how things pan out before commiting anything.
Thanks Lanko. Just to clarify I am not looking to copy any particular deck outright. I am looking to create something close, on the cheap, to maybe up my rank again a little more. I'm looking for feedback on the handful of key cards you can't do well without for sure in this attempt.
For instance, maybe Reno is no longer a lock with the increased board clear from DoD.
Just a discussion, I am not taking action yet. You maybe be right on, I might not be able to get there.
I appreciate the feedback and cards listed to review.
Worst mentality possible. Maybe because some people play to have fun rather than what is the tip top of the meta? Wow, having fun in a video game, what a notion.

More important, there is no meta yet, so saying one archetype is definitively "more successful" is just plain hogwash.

The fantastic thing about Reno is that he is board clear AND board development at the same time. For example, if you don't have minions and use a Flamestrike, you clear the board, then pass and the opponent develops again. Reno clears and leaves a 4/6 body on the board with combat initiative for the next turn. If he wasn't restricted to Highlander, he would be auto-include in every Mage deck haha.
That said, you can make a very decent deck without all those legendaries. Dragoncaster is one hell of a card, if you manage to pair it with Power of Creation you'll create a huge board swing. You can kind of make a pseudo-Reno pairing it with Flamestrike too. Free spells are that good. Most of the commons in DoD are pretty good, the 5/5 Dragon that buys a card should be a very nice addition, and the 6 mana 5/3 Divine Shield Rush.
Oh, and in case you already don't know, you can actually use your Dragonqueen in a non-highlander deck. The card checks if there are duplicates in the deck the moment it's played not when the game starts. Druid used their Highlander cards in a deck full of duplicates without a problem, for example, because of their great drawing power.
In case you already isn't using it as well, get Hearthstone Deck Tracker, and will be easier to track your deck during a match, for a variety of purposes. Since she's 9 mana you're not exactly too worried she will take awhile to be active, contrary to Reno, and in a longer game she'll be active pretty frequently.
I wouldn't do it, it's not extremely competitive and Highlander decks usually cost more than normal decks. Not a great way to spend your resources when you're newish
Okay so I have 30 or so games in with this deck and I think you all are probably right.
I thought I was on to something starting at rank 19 and going 10-4 up to 17 quickly, but then I fell back down hard.
I started playing the week SoU came out I think and I of course was very green (probably still am, just a little less). So this is my first experience seeing the meta change with a new set drop. I have to say that I am a bit stunned. I am not sure if this is just par for the course or not, but play seems very different now.... it's madness out there. So I get it now... wait to see how things settle out before committing.
So I will hold off crafting anything. Now I have to decide whether I want to drop my remaining 4300 gold on DoD packs (I bought 100).
Zeph is the best card for your dust right now, even more value than Zilliax. If you are running a highlander deck, Zeph is an auto include. All of the highlander decks try to abuse him by finding additional copies or bouncing him to hand. He would be the best target for Sathrovarr if you reduced either cost or had a coin. Zephy is so good that even non-highlander decks that have a lot of draw use him because when their draw engine starts to run out of cards or steam, you can play him as there is likely not two copies of any card in your deck anymore.
Still playing with the Highland Dragon Mage deck. Man that's a mouthful... maybe HighDrag or HiDra or Draglander Mage. It's a fun deck but gets behind quick vs Shamman and Pirate Warrior.
I own but had been dismissing Tortollan Pilgrim because I couldn't understand why you would want to random target a sheep, fireball or frost bolt spell etc. I see now that I have to lean harder on spells in the deck less affected by the random targeting that can add tempo or board clear. Let cards like Arcane Breath, Vulpera Scoundrel and Malygos fill in some of those gaps. Then I played it and realized you get to choose the spell! Awesome sauce.
So I have made a new version of the deck with this card and will see how it goes. So far it has taken me from rank 20 to 16.
It's so tempting to invest in a Pocket Galaxy but it rotates out of standard in April I think, so no way I will do that.
Just posting my thoughts in case any other newbs happens to learn from my learning.
I would like to post the deck I am using for some specific discussions on it's play and potential improvements. However, I am having issues getting it displayed.
Sunalker mentioned using deck tracker. Is that Innkeeper or something different?
I installed Innkeeper and it adds an overlay in game which is very helpful. But I have a couple issues:
1) When I installed it I think I clicked the box to NOT have my decks made public. This may be preventing me from sharing the deck here, not sure. I can't figure out where to change this setting.
2) When I look at the deck using Innkeeper, it opens a webpage. The problem is that it only shows that the deck has 18/30 cards. The in game overlay only shows 18 cards as well. Specifically it is the DoD cards that are not showing up. Not sure how to get it to sync properly.

But of those that will most likely stay will probably be, just to give you an idea, Zephrys the Great, Kalecgos, Alexstrasza. Reno the Relicologist, Power of Creation, Dragoncaster. Zilliax too, but he rotates in 4 months, not recommended, though healing would be really important in the deck...

TL;DR: craft Zeph, best card in HS.
Thanks. So maybe I will craft just Zephyr. I just bought 6 more packs with 2 legendaries. One was Frizz...
