Since the new expansion is launching I have noticed that a lot of people in the comments are thinking about cards in terms Even/ Odd decks, not even considering of playing with their entire collection. So I started to wonder if WW and BD got that many new players to the game? Because honestly that looks like it. And if that's the fact, well great, bigger playerbase is always good for the game but -
- as a player since the beginning of HS, I do consider new cards in a whole collection deck first, only after I do try to make a variance of Odd / Even and it looks like many people are just forgetting that there is no rule that forces anyone to cut their collection in half.
Do not get me wrong, both Baku and Genn provide bonuses for certain playstyle, sometimes creating really fun stuff but it's kinda weird to just forget that some decks won't need to spawn 2 dudes to be successful.
TLDR: not a salt post, just wondering if we are doomed to Even/Odd till those rotate or will we see more "full" decks in next expansion.
No need to wonder. The answer is yes. We are doomed with odd and even decks until baku and genn roate out because their effect is so powerful in certain classes that can really make use of upgraded or cheap hero powers . The HS team really should have waited until the end of the year if they really wanted genn and baku in the game.
The more cards available the more even/odd decks will be played. When making a deck i look what i include and think what i will loose if i make it even or odd. one of the best examples is my overload shaman. I actually only loose hex ans important card. Shure this one can be game deciding but its acceptable for going odd. A bit the same for mage. There are four great 2 cost cards to include and two 4 and 6 cost. Looking for replacements (mainly card draw for the 2 cost) was easy and so its now odd. I feel the diffrence by reduced boardclears due to sometimes not drawing one till T5-7 and loosing but usually the 2 damage HP compensates.
Especially with regards to Odd, you need a powerful reason to play with the entire collection. Until Witchwood is gone, the default setting will be "use Baku unless there's a specific reason not to".
There are a lot of great even-costed warrior cards, but none top 4 armor a button over many iterations.
Genn takes a little more convincing in anything but warlock. Even shaman works because of Eel and warlock has the best hero power in the game (don't @ me), but in general Baku is more compelling.

My favorite class for Genn Greymane is the Hunter, for the added pressure. Yeah you use lose the beloved 3-mana slot, but you get to keep all of the Secrets, Deathstalker Rexxar, The Lich King, and just-about all of Kathrena Winterwisp's Big Beast package. It's a lot of fun, weaving in a bunch of 2-damage shots while I stall for the major threats.
As for the topic at hand, I would say Genn + Baku share the same quality as Reno Jackson: cards that majorly influence how you construct a deck are very appealing and provide powerful advantages. Players who've been around a while can experiment with Even/Odd/Highlander setups to find new ways to play their tired classes, while newer players can benefit because what is required of their collection is narrowed down. Are they "overreacting"? Not really: if a card is powerful and fun, people are going to use it.
Behold, foolish interlopers! I am commanding this mortal to spread the will of the Scourge throughout the interwebs, encouraging you to seek out me, Archlich Kel'Thuzad! Now coming to you as the tenth class of Hearthstone!
I am a finalist in this Class Creation Competition, so if you could give it a look I would be greatly appreciative <3
