I'm very confused as to why blizzard put Cathedral Gargoyle into the witchwood. All of the support for dragon paladin is in wild, and dragon paladin doesn't have much support to begin with. This got me thinking about freeze shaman. Will they make some random, unneeded support for freeze shaman in the coming expansion(s)? All I want to know is, what's your guys' opinion on these types of decks?
They have to start somewhere. If someday, dragon paladin got enough synergy to become op, then people would compain "why would blizzard ever print such an op 2 drop." You cannot expect all the support of an archetype to appear in one expansion. Dragon priest took some time. Taunt warrior took some time (there was taunt synergy released, but the quest finally made them worth it, and only now, with more removal tools and better taunts, is the quest worth it). It's part of blizzard's design philosphy to create cards that enable different artchetypes and styles of play for each expansion. Only after enough support do some archetypes have the "critical mass" of cards to become worthwhile. They don't always turn out ladder viable, but that doesn't always matter. What matter is that the deck can be fun and different. This may be more difficult to justify to people like us on a forum, but for most players, they aren't looking to reach legend with a deck, they're just looking for different decks to make and play, and cards like this guide players towards making a thematic deck.
Edit: That being said, I'm not a fan of how blizzard created and abondoned the freeze shaman archetype soon after , especially having gotten moorabi as my first 10 guarenteed legendary of KFT. Gargoyle is a good card when it activates, whereas moorabi is not even good if the freeze archtype worked. Also, freeze as an archetype seems problematic to me. It works off negative tempo for the opponent, in a style that is rather uninteractive.
There will probably be more to come, they seem determined to keep dragons alive. Since BRM there have been 5 expansions with some dragon support.
Similar with murlocs, almost every expansion comes with a few more of those little buggars and their core support are basic/standard cards.
Shame they gave up with the mechs after GvG...well, there was Clockwork Knight in TGT but that never saw much use.
Well in all fairness, they SHOULD keep Dragons alive, as they're one of Hearthstone's core/original tribe tags. That said, the one of dragon support card for paladin made me scratch my head too as was pointed out already, the other pali dragon cards are in wild. It would've been nice if Pali got more dragon cards if that's what they wanted to do.
I agree with mechs as a tribe as they're my favorite tribe of all time, since GVG you're lucky to get one maybe two mechs every other expansion. When the legendary warrior tower thing was announced for witchwood I though for sure that thing was a mech at the very least since ship's cannon was given the mech tag, but no. For some head scratching reason its tribeless.
It's all part of their business strategy. You see, they could have released all the dragon support for paladins in Witchwood and all you had to do was buy packs only from WW expansion in order to make a dragon paladin deck but instead, they had a better idea: they released a few dragon support cards in WW, they will release a few more next expansion and the last remaining support cards in the 3rd expansion. That way, you're going to have to buy packs from all 3 expansions and you will have to buy a lot more in order to have a decent chance of getting the cards you need.
Pretty great strategy if you ask me.
