I'm not a new player per say, I've been playing for years but I've never been any good. Now that my collection is better I'd like some help with building/modifying decks so I can try to climb the ladder. I'm absolutely terrible at it and basically only use the "only show decks I can create" feature. I also have all the cards from Blackrock and Kara but I'm scared to dust any of them. Can anyone help me out? Much appreciated. I've mainly played Priest/Warrior/Rogue.
I'd like to give you some deckbuilding tips, because the main thing that's fun for me is building decks and doing well with them, tweaking them... etc etc. The whole point of hearthstone is that it's a deckbuilding game. It's more fun in the end to build your own deck and do ok with it than to copy and paste a deck from the top lists and do well with it. Trust me, I've tried both ways. I'm never going back to the copy & paste method.
Also, are you planning on playing wild? I personally recommend it because it's more fun and diverse.
There are several methods to making a deck. The method I'll tell you is the one I use.
1st: decide what style of deck you want to make. There are aggro decks, midrange decks, combo decks, and control decks.
Aggro: The point of this deck is to destroy your opponent as soon as possible. Most of the time you will end up ignoring their board and simply dealing as much damage as possible.
Control: The point of this deck is to outlast and control the board, and run your opponent out of resources. Some control decks aim to fatigue your opponent, others aim to close out the game with a flood of big minions.
Midrange: The point of this deck changes with your matchup. Against aggro, your goal is to run them out of resources and control the board. Against Control, your goal is to rush them down and play "on curve" or basically use up all your mana each turn by playing minions.
Combo: The point of this deck relies on a specific combo. However, these often require many expensive cards and are incredibly vulnerable to losing combo pieces via milling. They often include lots of draw and stall to give them time to get all their combo pieces.
2: After deciding which style of deck to create (that depends on your personal preference and playstyle) you need to pick a class you want to use. Each class has their own strengths and weaknesses and not all classes have a viable archetype for each style.
Combo: Rogue, Priest, Warlock, Mage... There are others but I'm too lazy to put them down
3: After deciding on which deck style you want, and which class you are using, you need to come up with a "win condition". This is basically your plan to win the game. This was partially decided by your style you chose, but now you need cards to execute that win condition. For example, if we were to make a Midrange Hunter (one of the famously good budget decks) our goal is to outlast aggro but to attack control. So, how would we do that? If I'm using your profile, I would add in minions that trade well (that can kill multiple things and stay alive) like Fiery Bat and Kindly Grandmother, or even Cave Hydra, and ways to ruin their game plan, such as secrets. Explosive trap and Freezing trap are good options here, and misdirection and wandering monster can be good as well. So that's how we will deal with aggro. Now, how can we kill control? First, we can put in Kill Command, which can be used to deal 5 dmg face or to kill off a taunt. Deathstalker Rexxar is a good option here as well, because it gives a lot of value by letting you create your own beasts and customizing them to the situation. Savannah Highmane is an incredibly strong value card that is hard to kill and, even when killed, gives you more minions to use. Animal companion can either strengthen your entire board, give you 4 extra dmg on the board, or give you a sturdy taunt. These are all good options. This is known as the "core" of your deck. It's the basic cards that you will want to use to achieve your goal. From here, it's all filling out your mana curve and adding value cards. As a midrange deck, you need to not run out of steam against aggro, so card draw is important here. Add in some trackings, gnommish inventors, and quick shots. Quick shot is good and if your hand happens to be empty then you get a card. However, don't wait till your hand is empty to use it. Raptor Hatchling is a good card because it provides value now and more value later in the game. Houndmaster is good with all your beasts in the deck. Dire mole is good because it trades well. Now, looking at the mana curve, we are lacking in 7+ cost cards. So let's go to the neutrals. Bonemare is a great value minion. So, you'll end up with a deck that looks similar to this one.
From there, it's a simple matter of playing tons of games, changing out cards you don't like and experimenting. You need to get to know your deck, its weaknesses, and just enjoy playing it.
