I've been playing Hearthstone for a month, and I've reached a point where I feel I need some help to get further in the game. I built this mage deck, and peaked at Rank 16 with it, however I found that I had to play almost perfectly to win or take initiative.
I'm now thinking I can probably upgrade this deck to a secret tempo mage, but it requires Karazhan cards which I don't have, so instead I thought of crafting either aggro druid or F2P Hunter. I'd ideally want to get to rank 10, maybe 5 this month, but perhaps that requires me to disenchant too many cards just to get 1 deck that might not be effective after patch 9.1 comes out.
If having to buy Karazhan becomes a pay-wall to improving my mage deck, I'd be willing to switch to Hunter/Druid, but I'd be having to start again learning a new deck I guess.
I'd also want to get better at arena so perhaps I can more easily build up my collection.
So TL;DR: If I want to get to at least Rank 10 this month, what should I focus on? Improving my most experienced mage deck, crafting and learning a new meta deck, or getting better at the game to do arena more?
Did you say you wanted to get to rank 10 or even 5 in the same paragraph? First of all you seriously need to start being realistic, and I don't want to be a dick but the honest straight answer is: You won't. When we all started the goal was always to get to rank 15-10 and 5 but that isn't realistic, you want to magically jump from rank 16 to rank 5? Even if you had the whole entire HS collection you would struggle a lot to even go past ranks 14-13 just because you don't have the knowledge, I'm sure you don't mulligan effectively against every single class and archetype and you probably make a lot of begginers misplays. There are players that have been playing for a year that sill struggle to reach rank 10 so, again, be realistic and set realistic goals, this month your goal should be rank 15 then it should be rank 14-13 evey month but you won't make that huge of a jump in your second month with that little of a collection.
As for our question my advice is: Buy Karazhan, most decks have at least one or two cards from that adventure and they are pivotal cards on said decks. Then you should focus in 1 class and get all the important cards for 1 or 2 decks of that class and then if you want start building the next class. I started playing 2 years ago and for the first 4 months I only played Shaman and then started building Rogue and Priest, now the only class I still don't play is warrior and I have at least 1 or 2 really strong decks for each class but warrior. If you are planning to be a budget player then investigating is your friend, open as many oacks as you can and dust everythig that's bad there are a lot of epic and legendaries that suck bad but also a lot that are amazing and you'll use eventually, so dust everythin that's bad and not used at all and keep the good stuff, even if you don't use it now, trust me, you'll regret having to re-craft a legendary even if it helped you to make a lot of cards in the past, it's better to keep it, you'll end up saving 1200 dust if you keep them, your choice.
I saw the reply I got as quite negative, and so didn't bother to reply. I WAS being realistic and definitely believed I could hit Rank 10, and 5 would be possible if I kept playing.
Well, after the nerfs hit I started working on my Mid-Range Hunter deck. I'd create a version, go on a win streak, then when I started to lose a few, upgrade a few cards. At the same time I was making sure in every game, I was expanding my familiarity of the main aoe spells, minions etc of each class. Though I found that establishing the right balance between board control and going face was a far more consistent indicator of whether I'd win or lose games.
I've hit Rank 5 now, and on the way, I'd play against Hunters and win against almost all of them. I'd see them making inefficient plays, going for face, when I could just make value trades with their minions. So I did have to craft a bunch of cards, namely, having 2x Eaglehorn Bow was essential for those times I needed that extra board control.
From what it seems, you were saying having a bigger collection = better rank, and that I'd get stuck at a lower rank until I got a bigger collection. Rather I think it is knowledge of the cards from those who do have bigger collections that helped me, I don't need to own the cards to know what they do.
I guess the next thing would be seeing if I could get more than 1 deck to Rank 10/5 standard, but that's mostly for next month. I still want to improve the mage deck.
I seriously struggle to believe you, it took me like 8-10 months just to reach rank 10 and like 1 year and 5-6 months to finally break it into rank 5, now after 2 years and a half I still find it a little hard to get to rank 5 but I always do, sooner or later and you are trying to tell me than in just one month of playing you discovered the secret to just climb like crazy? You basically skipped the whole learning curve of the game (which for sure can't be learned in a month) and youre sitting at rank 5 just now and the other 99% of HS players that had to grind and play for months and even years can't see the game the way you do? And sure you hit rank 5 as a new player that's probably playing a subpar hunter list, on a meta that is so hostile to hunter rn with razakus priest stomping on hunter, with evolve shaman getting pretty much an auto win against evey hunter, with jade druid out valuing every hunter turn after like turn 5, with the small taunt warrior rise, with the immense amount of tempo rogues in the ladder that do the same thing hunter does but just a lot better and a lot more decks. Sure man youre gonna end up hitting legend on the last day of the expansion, you obviously have god-like skills and knowledge with your whole 1 month of playing that the other 99.99% of HS players just missed, even PRO players that are recognized as the best of the world I don't think reached rank 5 in a month just by grinding it out every day. Cut the bullshit now, no one believes you, we all lived and know what it takes to achieve those higher ranks. Probably your phone is not working and you meant to write 15 instead of 5 :)
I seriously struggle to believe you, it took me like 8-10 months just to reach rank 10 [...]
Honestly, I have no clue whether OP is telling the truth or not... maybe if he posted proof, that could help ;)
Anyway, in playing this game, like in most things, people range over a wide set of values about skill, time invested, luck, <insert any meaningful factor here>. Most will find themselves somewhere in the middle of the spectrum, but there are bound to be outliers. Again, I don't know if the story is true or not, but still it's possible, however unlikely it might seem.
For example, you say it took you like 8-10 months just to reach rank 10. Fine, but I made it in 2 and a half months (F2PBTW), and I'm a modest player, pretty sure others have done better. I read of a guy who claims to have hit Legend the 1st time he tried, with little experience (not even all heroes to level 10) and with a pretty poor collection. Hard to believe, sure, perhaps even a bit unnerving for us common mortals, but you can't rule it out.
@Mackie264 just like you i don't want to be a dick but did you even bother to play standard in this meta after the nerfs?
As i have played all the top meta decks but Highlander Priest which i never will i do think my opinion on your raging ego is valid.
Just because you are not good at a game after a year of play does not mean that someone else who just starts and knows how to manage resources and make decks that have the win more potential as hunter does cannot reach the rank you bow down to and hardly get.
Hunter in the current meta has a very special place, if you queue in the right matchups it wrecks havoc. Sure it has some bad matchups but if you know how to mulligan and know what tech to use to win some matchups more often you can and not just net deck everything.
I've used Evolve Shaman, Midrange Hunter and Token Druid, aside from some other decks that didn't really work for me in the current meta (Control Warlock, Control Paladin, Handlock, Secret Mage, Jade Druid variants), on ladder earlier in the season and the same decks just weren't giving me the wins at rank 5 to push my way to legend. So a friend suggested i try Zoo Warlock and i managed to get from rank 5 to legend in 8-9 hours.
What i'm trying to say getting to rank 5 is no big deal as you have the option to get on a win streak and free to play decks have always been an option now and in the past. For example Face Hunter and Pirate Warrior were the main ones. Pirate warrior even lives now after the nerf, not so free to play friendly but it was in the past.
Now stop whinning about someone being better than you and give advice on how he should improve his deck for what the thread was ment for.
Why are you even here dude? You should be blowing it off on tournaments? And just cut the bullshit everyone, I know rank 5 is not hot stuff or anything but you can seriously believe believe the dude just discovered something we all missed and/or failed to see to be a god in hearthstone, and yes, again, rank 5 is not god tier or anything but someone that could reach rank 5 in a month is for sure a beast. And my arguments of him not being anything special are just validated by just looking at the deck he built, I know his collection has to be a meme but there are a lot of cards from the basic set that are much much better but ok, just keep trusting every single person that claims anything. Hey guys, new player here, been playing for 20 minutes, just hit legend now, ez pz game git gud.
Here take a look at this hunter deck. If you can't get that much dust in a month why do you even play. And nobody says we believe it just can be achieved.
you are trying to tell me than in just one month of playing you discovered the secret to just climb like crazy? You basically skipped the whole learning curve of the game (which for sure can't be learned in a month)
Well, there's no actual secret to climbing like crazy, the information is out there in lots of videos, articles, I just had to go out and use it. I have friends who told me that it was hard for any new player, and the learning curve was quite punishing, but I was expecting it. Plus my first month was kinda learning the game with my tempo mage deck, and got to Rank 16. Doesn't mean I suddenly know all the decks and details, but learning the fundamentals seems to be important here. Trump Teachings video series especially helped me beat Legendary decks with Basic cards.
even PRO players that are recognized as the best of the world I don't think reached rank 5 in a month just by grinding it out every day.
Disguised Toast's run using F2P Hunter during the Un'goro meta seems to be quite well known as well. It is these examples, plus some people on battle.net forums saying they reached Rank 5 with only a few months play, that I knew I could do it. And why not?
And sure you hit rank 5 as a new player that's probably playing a subpar hunter list, on a meta that is so hostile to hunter rn with razakus priest stomping on hunter, with evolve shaman getting pretty much an auto win against evey hunter, with jade druid out valuing every hunter turn after like turn 5, with the small taunt warrior rise, with the immense amount of tempo rogues in the ladder that do the same thing hunter does but just a lot better and a lot more decks.
Yes, perhaps my hunter deck wasn't the best up to Rank 13, but I had most of the key cards like Savannah Highmane, Alleycat + Razormaw. Oh, of course it did :).
Hearthstone has me curious with how most people play the game. Are a lot of people stuck at lower ranks after more than 200 games or do most people just play casual to Rank 20/15 for the rewards? It seems to be a mix, and why Rank 20 is full of netdecks like Pirate Warrior.
So TL;DR: If I want to get to at least Rank 10 this month, what should I focus on? Improving my most experienced mage deck, crafting and learning a new meta deck, or getting better at the game to do arena more?
What I find both funny and impressive is that you opened this thread asking for advice, basically received none, and yet you met your (extended) goal. Congrats!
But I guess the sweetest compliment is the one below ;)

Amazing. I believe talented. Just in 1 month.
I think you can go far. Tournaments maybe one day?
It took me 2 years to reach rank 5. Haven't reached legend yet.
Edit: just saw the thread was old and the op has hit rank 5. So deleting my advice as it is unneeded.

Rank 5 isn't that hard for a thinker, it's Hearthstone, not rocket science.
Hunter deck is the best for start, and not so hard to pilot.
As for the Mage deck, secret tempo mage should be your answer with low dust budget.
