SEASON'S GREETINGS!
The first Weekly Card Design Competition of Season 3 begins at 22:00 UTC this Thursday, January 7th, 2016. As a pre-Season event, we decided to go meta and have a small competition-competition, where forum members could submit proposals for our first competition theme of the new season (find out more about this competition here). We had about 50 valid entries, which we have narrowed down to 8 finalists based on your up-votes. Check out each competition proposal by opening the spoilers below, and then vote in our poll for as many or as few as you like! The poll results will remain hidden, and you will not find out the winner until the competition goes up this Thursday. Best of luck to all of our finalists! ^_^
"Feugen & Stalagg Need Friends" by Cyg2112
FEUGEN & STALAGG NEED FRIENDS - Design Competition
Your goal is to design a pair of 2 Legendary minions which have some sort of direct interaction with each other. This can be in the form of a Deathrattle, a "when drawn" effect, an Inspire effect, a Battlecry, etc., just no new created keywords.
Existing examples include... well, just Feugen and Stalagg!!
Your 2 minions must be collectible (no token creation), can be any class or neutral, must be Legendary, and must have an effect that doesn't inherently require you to draw one of them before the other (similar to how it doesn't matter if you draw Feugen or Stalaag first in order to make Thaddius). Also, just like with Feugen and Stalagg, both cards must reference the other one BY NAME in their texts!!
When posting your submission, show both cards next to each other in 300 x 431 sizes, like this:
And, of course, all the usual posting rules (no deleting, no huge changes, links from Imgur, etc.).
Happy Creating!!
"Short and Sweet" by DKPaladinMDL
Short and Sweet
Often in Hearthstone design we are tempted to create cards with complex effects. These can turn out well, however, what makes Hearthstone different from other card games like Magic is that its cards are extremely simple, but can result in interesting interactions. Hence the slogan, "Deceptively Simple, Insanely Fun." While it may seem like the challenge of card design is to make the most original and unique effect possible, sometimes, it boils down to being able to combine simple effects that have been seen before to produce interesting results.
Theme: Make the coolest spell card you can in 9 words or less.
Entry Restrictions:
Your card must be a class spell.
Your card's effect must be 9 words or less, not including numbers. See the examples for clarity.
Your card may not create or reference cards or tokens that do not currently exist in Hearthstone.
Your card may not use vague or one-of-a-kind wording that does not already exist in Hearthstone. [Example: Justicar Trueheart would not be valid for this competition, even if the effect was on a spell, since "A better one" is vague and had never been used before.]
Use syntax that is as correct as you can possibly make it. If you're not sure about something, reference existing cards. If you use incorrect syntax to fit your effect within the 9 word limit, whether or not you did it on purpose, your card will suffer. [For example, if you said "Draw 1 card" instead of "Draw a card" in order to count it for 2 words instead of 3, this would be considered as breaking a rule.]
To the Voters:
This competition is all about elegance and simplicity. This means that you should consider syntax and wording equally as important as balance, theme, viability, and flavor. If you see someone sacrificing simplicity for a more complex effect, they don't deserve your votes.
Conversely, not only should clunky cards be punished, but simple ones should be rewarded. If someone can make a card that makes you say "Nice!" in only a few words, it deserves your votes.
Existing Examples:
Valid Cards:
Invalid Cards:
"Self Destruct Sequence Initiated" by Nothingsjim
SELF DESTRUCT SEQUENCE INITIATED
Theme: Create a Minion that destroys itself
Theme Specific Restriction:
Your card must be a minion, spell that summon minion(s) are not valid entries.
The minion must have an effect that destroys itself when certain conditions are met, without needing your opponent to directly kill it with minion or spells.
Existing Examples:
Anima Golem Very straight forward, destroys itself whenever it's alone on your side of the board. Your opponent will want to meet this card's self-destruct condition.
Doomsayer He destroy all minions on board, including himself, so he fits the theme too. This card's self-destruct effect is a double edged sword. Your opponent may or may not want to meet this card's self-destruct condition.
Mimiron's Head Behold! The magnificent aerial command unit! This card requires another 2 mechs at your side of the board when your turn begins to trigger the self-destruct, however, it provides such a major advantage in form of V-07-TR-0N that your opponent will definitely not want to let this card meet its self-destruct condition.
Happy Creating, and DO NOT PUSH THAT RED BUTTON!!
"Permanent Spells" by PupleMD
Permanent Spells
Most spells, when played, do an action and then promptly disappear. For example, Blessing of Kings gives a minion +5/+5, and then it's done. There's no continued effect. So forget that, because for this theme you'll be doing the exact opposite.
Your card must be a class spell that has a permanent and reoccurring effect on the game.
Make sure your card has some way to interact with it being played multiple times. Do the effects stack? Or does something special happen when played again (Like with Shadowform)?
The best examples for wording are tied with minions like Naga Sea Witch and Cult Master as they give a passive effect until removed. As a spell, this removal will never happen, so remember to balance accordingly.
Currently, Shadowform is the only example in Hearthstone, but The Mistcaller also gives a very good example with it's Battlecry. Regardless, I've included a very basic example of what your card might look like.

Title: Let's School the Devs
Theme: Create a Card that empowers any existing card that sees little if any play at all.
The card you create:
1) It can be a minion or a spell.
2) It must require one or more preexisting card(s) to be effective.
3) It should be good enough make both the card that exists and the card you create "meta" through their synergy.
4) It should not be overpowered. It should just be good enough to be a decent card in constructed.
Example:
"I, Card" by Sinthuja
I, CARD
Theme: Ever wanted to be a Hearthstone card yourself? What kind would you be? Now is your chance to show us! Your job is to create a legendary class minion card that represents yourself!
Restrictions:
Your card must be a legendary class minion.
Your card must be named after your Hearthpwn username, your Battle.net username or after one your World of Warcraft character names.
Your card cannot create tokens that do not exist in Hearthstone.
If you chose to create the card after your World of Warcraft character, you can use high quality screenshot as a card picture if you want. This is not a requirement though.
I created an example after my World of Warcraft character and Hearthpwn username Sinthuja! :)

"Monkey Madness" by mk572
!!! MONKEY MADNESS !!!
2016 is the Year of the Monkey in the Chinese calendar. What better way to kick it off than a monkey-themed card creation competition. Let's go Bananas!
Rules: Standard card creation rules apply, with the following additions.
* Your card can be a minion, spell or weapon.
* If it's a minion, it has to be a monkey (examples above). Add the beast tag if appropriate.
* Weapons or spells have to reference either monkeys, bananas, or thrown barrels.
* Create only one card. All created tokens or spells must already be in the game (examples below). Exception: If your card grants a hero power, include it.
"Stay Classy, HearthPwn" by RandomScribbles (Wild Card)
STAY CLASSY,
SAN DIEGOHEARTHPWNOne of the great things about Hearthstone is that each class feels different. That's because each class tends to have different mechanics- not just in hero power, but in card abilities as well. With the exception of some neutral cards, each class has a near monopoly on a few card mechanics. I've chosen one from each class here:
The challenge is the following:
Make a class card that uses a listed mechanic from a different class, e.g. a priest card with windfury.
This card must still feel like it belongs to its actual class. That windfury priest card needs a justification for its white border. This can be via secondary mechanics, lore, or whatever you want; it just shouldn't feel out of place in its chosen class.
Druids can't use the hunter's beast synergy mechanic for obvious reasons.
An example from within the game would be Al'Akir the Windlord. He's the only non-paladin/non-neutral in the game to have divine shield, yet he still manages to be very much a Shaman card. More cards like that- that slightly blur the class lines but don't break them. Another example would be Frost Shock. Those Shaman just love breaking the rules, apparently.
You can find me here! Good luck everyone!
My favorite is Short and Sweet. I think it would be better if the number of words was even less than 9, but it would be interesting the see what simple cards people can come up with. One of my favorite cards in these competitions, Aluna, would have easily qualified for this one. I also voted for Monkey Madness (it should be called Monkey Business), mainly because I've got a good idea for it.
Also, I Card is incredibly unfair, in that you are restricted in what you can make based on something completely unrelated to card design: your username. I would be pigeonholed into making a card called Nurgling because I wanted to make a warhammer reference when I quickly chose a username for this site years ago. There are plenty of people with usernames that really, really wouldn't be good for a card name. Sure, you can use a WoW character them, but that pretty much bypasses the entire theme restriction. You can just go and make a character named whatever you want to call your card, and no one can really check it. Please do not vote for this one.

Thank you kind Sir. Monkey Business is a fine naming suggestion. First I wanted to go for "Go Bananas", then something related to monkeys and spanking but I thought I'd rather keep it family friendly.
I, Card is most interesting!
