Hello, folks! As you know, we'll be starting Season 3 of our Weekly Card Design Competition next week, during the first full week of January. Those of you who have been paying attention to little hints dropped here and there may have an idea of what we have planned, but there is one thing that we do not have planned at all: The competition theme for the first week of the competition. That's where you all come in! In an almost uncomfortably meta move, we're going to have a little competition to determine week #61's competition theme. I guess you could say this is a competition competition. Without further ado...
Interestingly, this set of rules will be an example for itself. I did say uncomfortably meta, didn't I? Anyway, here between the competition's name and the entry restrictions is where you could write a little something about the spirit of the theme or what inspired it or whatever. This is not a requirement, though. The requirements are the next part.
Theme-Specific Restrictions: Your proposed competition needs a name, and it should be the first thing in your submission post. I recommend making it a header or making it bold or writing it in ALL CAPS, anything to set it apart so that we know that's the name. Personally, I like punny names, but that's not a requirement. Next, you need to have a distinct list of restrictions (the minimum number of restrictions is one). That list should look something like this one. You can use a bullet list, use a numbered list, start each section with the little mana crystal image we use, whatever, as long as we can distinctly tell what the separate items are. Your competition theme should be distinct from anything that we did during Season 2 of the competition. Season 1 was long enough ago that we're going to allow you to revisit and have some overlap or similarity with those themes, but your version of it should still be distinct in some way. Deleting any post in the submission topic is against the rules. Deleted posts screw with a few things, including the computer program that we use to help us tally up-votes. If you double-post or something, just PM one of the moderators, edit your post to say "REMOVED", and leave it there for us to take care of. Since people are so bad at following this rule, I will be putting it into the weekly restriction section of every competition from now on. You do not have to include it in your submission. Be aware that the winning competition may be altered by the moderators. It is our responsibility to make sure that the weekly themes are coherent and functional, so you can rest assured that a winner that we don't feel is coherent enough may be altered. This should not be an excuse for you to submit something without thinking it through, but it is assurance that we will not push forward a competition theme that does not make sense.
Examples: In addition to your list of restrictions, you can also include a separate section of examples to help guide folks. This is not required. If these examples are existing cards, you can list as many as you like. (Example: Lorewalker Cho, Beneath the Grounds, Sludge Belcher, Crackle, Fiery War Axe, Treant.) If there are no existing Hearthstone cards that would fit your competition theme but you really think you need to show an example, you may include up to one card image of a card you made yourself (this card must be hosted somewhere other than Hearthcards, and it may not be a golden card) or up to two card images of existing cards from other games. For examples of examples (oh god o_o), check out some of our past competitions by visiting our Winner's Gallery (which, yes, we do realize needs some updating >_<).
General Competition Rules
These are the rules that remain consistent from competition to competition. Some of it has been removed as irrelevant to this competition since you're submissions aren't cards.
You are allowed to submit only one entry. An entry consists of only one collectible card, or in this case a competition theme as explained above.
You are allowed to post in this Submission Topic only once, only to submit your one entry.
You may not delete ANY posts you make in this Submission Topic, not even accidental ones you may make over your one allowed, such as by double-posting or by accidentally posting something here that you meant for the Discussion Topic. If you do accidentally post more than once, inform any of the Fan Creation Forum moderators via PM, and we will handle it.
Speaking of the Discussion Topic, that is where any discussion of this competition should go. This thread is for submissions only. If you want to discuss your card or ask questions about the competition rules or process, you can find a link to the Discussion Topic at the top of this thread. Plenty of folks there will be happy to help you out.
Once you have submitted your one entry, you are allowed to make only minor changes to it. Minor changes are things like correcting typos or making balance changes that do not alter the spirit of your entry as determined by we the moderators. If you want to make any changes and have any doubts as to their legality, ask us first.
Fun and even humorous entries are perfectly allowed, but "troll" entries will be disqualified. If you're worried that your card may be misinterpreted as a troll card, contact a moderator before you submit.
Finally, know that manipulating votes in any way is strictly forbidden. Any violators will receive an official warning, and will be banned from this and all future HearthPwn Card Design Competitions.
Competition Process
Be aware that this competition will run on an unusual time frame and will have a couple of other minor process differences from the usual.
Entry Phase and Early Voting (Starts Now! Ends 03:00 UTC 2/January/2016) It is during this Phase that you may submit entries to the Submission Topic. You may also, of course, feel free to give early up-votes to any submissions that you like! Voting Phase (Starts 03:00 UTC 2/January/2016, Ends 20:00 UTC 4/January/2016) During this Phase, the Submission Topic will be locked, so no more entries may be submitted. Instead, use this time to browse the submissions and up-vote your favorites! This is a longer time than usual because it's over the weekend. Final Phase (Starts 21:00 UTC 4/January/2016, Ends 21:00 UTC 7/January/2016) During this Phase, the Discussion Topic will also be locked, and a new Poll Topic will go up. Discussion will be allowed to continue in the Poll Topic, and it will also include all the qualifying finalists and poll to decide the winner of the competition! This poll will be hidden, and the winner of the poll will not be revealed until we actually post the Submission Topic for the winning competition.
How do we determine the qualifying finalists? First, we'll pull up-vote data from each submission using the formula detailed below:
(ab) / (c) = x
Where, a = The total number of submissions on the same page as the submission. b = The total number of up-votes that the submission received. c = The total number of up-votes on the same page as the submission. x = The submission's final score.
The formula basically measures which cards stood out the most, with the necessary assumption that each page is about equal in overall submission quality. It will be the entries that receive the highest final scores that move on to the Final Phase.
The bottom line is that, although entries on the earlier pages of the Submission Topic are much more visible and thus receive many more up-votes than entries on later pages, you don't actually have to rush to get your entry in as soon as possible because the up-votes end up being weighted by what page your entry ends up on in order to determine its final score.

Rewards
There are none. We intend for this competition to be the complete opposite of our Winter Unveiling. Whereas that one was big and super serious mode because a lot was riding on it, this one is small and casual. The sole reward will be bragging rights and, of course, that your winning competition theme will be use for the first Weekly Card Design Competition of Season 3.
FEUGEN & STALAGG NEED FRIENDS - Design Competition
Your goal is to design a pair of 2 Legendary minions which have some sort of direct interaction with each other. This can be in the form of a Deathrattle, a "when drawn" effect, an Inspire effect, a Battlecry, etc., just no new created keywords.
Existing examples include... well, just Feugen and Stalagg!!
Your 2 minions must be collectible (no token creation), can be any class or neutral, must be Legendary, and must have an effect that doesn't inherently require you to draw one of them before the other (similar to how it doesn't matter if you draw Feugen or Stalaag first in order to make Thaddius). Also, just like with Feugen and Stalagg, both cards must reference the other one BY NAME in their texts!!
When posting your submission, show both cards next to each other in 300 x 431 sizes, like this:
And, of course, all the usual posting rules (no deleting, no huge changes, links from Imgur, etc.).
Your card must contain some sort of pun, joke, or cultural reference in its name and/or card text.
Your card must still be viable in Hearthstone. You can play around with how the text is written out, as in Skycap'n Kragg, but it still has to work. Non-functional cards will be disqualified, no matter how funny they are.
Purely visual gags in the art don’t count, and the joke can’t be just in the flavor text. All Hearthstone cards have a joke in the flavor text, so that doesn't make them very special.
Card art cannot be photographs or screenshots. You need to use actual art.
No Dr. Boom puns/parodies. We've had enough of those already.
Here are some examples from Hearthstone that would count:
Entry Restrictions:: Your card must be a minion. Your card has to be a Mech. The combined result of its Attack, Health and Mana Cost must be a prime number (2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 61...) Your card cannot create other cards that aren't already in the game.
Theme: Create a card that interacts/synergizes with Silence or has a Silence effect.
Restrictions:
Your card must contain the keyword Silence, or interact with Silenced minions in some way.
Your card cannot simply Silence a minion. These cards are pretty boring, and difficult to balance. Mass Dispel is acceptable, as is Light's Champion due to its prerequisite, but Spellbreaker and Silence are not.
Feel free to use any and all Keywords to spice things up.
If this theme is too narrow focused, it could be extended with the following:
Restriction:
You may create a card (likely a minion) that contains a persistent effect that would be inherently improved by Silence, or 'activated' by it. Examples include Wrathguard, Ancient Watcher, or Anima Golem as these effects are inherently negative. Ogre Brute does not fit the criteria as it has the ability to dodge Taunts or hit Stealths so is not inherently bad.
One of the great things about Hearthstone is that each class feels different. That's because each class tends to have different mechanics- not just in hero power, but in card abilities as well. With the exception of some neutral cards, each class has a near monopoly on a few card mechanics. I've chosen one from each class here:
Make a class card that uses a listed mechanic from a different class, e.g. a priest card with windfury.
This card must still feel like it belongs to its actual class. That windfury priest card needs a justification for its white border. This can be via secondary mechanics, lore, or whatever you want; it just shouldn't feel out of place in its chosen class.
Druids can't use the hunter's beast synergy mechanic for obvious reasons.
An example from within the game would be Al'Akir the Windlord. He's the only non-paladin/non-neutral in the game to have divine shield, yet he still manages to be very much a Shaman card. More cards like that- that slightly blur the class lines but don't break them. Another example would be Frost Shock. Those Shaman just love breaking the rules, apparently.
Most spells, when played, do an action and then promptly disappear. For example, Blessing of Kings gives a minion +5/+5, and then it's done. There's no continued effect. So forget that, because for this theme you'll be doing the exact opposite.
Your card must be a class spell that has a permanent and reoccurring effect on the game.
Make sure your card has some way to interact with it being played multiple times. Do the effects stack? Or does something special happen when played again (Like with Shadowform)?
The best examples for wording are tied with minions like Naga Sea Witch and Cult Master as they give a passive effect until removed. As a spell, this removal will never happen, so remember to balance accordingly.
Currently, Shadowform is the only example in Hearthstone, but The Mistcaller also gives a very good example with it's Battlecry. Regardless, I've included a very basic example of what your card might look like.
When you think about worst legendary in hearthstone, one of the first things came in mind is Hemet Nesingwary. So let's make this sad useless dwarf more useful. And Tomb Spider will be happy too.
Theme-Specific Restrictions: Your card must be a Beast, or have some sort of transform into a Beast effect, like Druid of the Claw or Tinkmaster Overspark
Your Beast must have at least 10-stat points in form of Attack+Health, but Attack must be 6 or lower, to not compete with other dwarf Big Game Hunter. But if you creating something like examples above, only tokens can have this restrictions, original cards can be anything.
You must use Beasts from World of Warcraft and real art for it, not screenshots or photos.
Theme: Create a minion with low stats for a high cost who's card text makes u for its cost.
Entry Restrictions: Your card must be a minion. Your card must cost between 5/10 mana. Your cad must have at least 4 less stats then double its cost (Exp: A 7 mana minion can be a 5/5, but not a 5/6 or higher).
Your card CANNOT:
have equal or less stats then double its cost (Exp: A 10 mana minion can be a 5/6, but not a 5/5 or lower)
Give extra stats to itself. It CAN give stats to other minions.
Summon another minion via Battlecry, Deathrattle, 'End of turn', Choose One, or Combo.
Reduce its own cost.
Transform via Battlecry, 'End of turn', Choose One, or Combo.
Just because a minion died doesn't mean it can't be useful.
Theme-Specific Restrictions: Your card's effect should be based on a minion (or minions) that died before it was played. Your card's text must include the words "died this game." This can refer to a specific minion, a category of minions (e.g. pirates), a random minion, etc. The minion(s) can be yours, your opponent's, or both. Your card can be a minion, weapon, or spell.
Often in Hearthstone design we are tempted to create cards with complex effects. These can turn out well, however, what makes Hearthstone different from other card games like Magic is that its cards are extremely simple, but can result in interesting interactions. Hence the slogan, "Deceptively Simple, Insanely Fun." While it may seem like the challenge of card design is to make the most original and unique effect possible, sometimes, it boils down to being able to combine simple effects that have been seen before to produce interesting results.
Theme: Make the coolest spell card you can in 9 words or less.
Entry Restrictions: Your card must be a class spell. Your card's effect must be 9 words or less, not including numbers. See the examples for clarity. Your card may not create or reference cards or tokens that do not currently exist in Hearthstone. Your card may not use vague or one-of-a-kind wording that does not already exist in Hearthstone. [Example: Justicar Trueheart would not be valid for this competition, even if the effect was on a spell, since "A better one" is vague and had never been used before.] Use syntax that is as correct as you can possibly make it. If you're not sure about something, reference existing cards. If you use incorrect syntax to fit your effect within the 9 word limit, whether or not you did it on purpose, your card will suffer. [For example, if you said "Draw 1 card" instead of "Draw a card" in order to count it for 2 words instead of 3, this would be considered as breaking a rule.]
To the Voters: This competition is all about elegance and simplicity. This means that you should consider syntax and wording equally as important as balance, theme, viability, and flavor. If you see someone sacrificing simplicity for a more complex effect, they don't deserve your votes. Conversely, not only should clunky cards be punished, but simple ones should be rewarded. If someone can make a card that makes you say "Nice!" in only a few words, it deserves your votes.
Existing Examples:
Valid Cards:
Flash Heal It only counts for two words since the "5" doesn't count. This is a great example of a card that does absolutely nothing new, but because of the subtle design behind the exact amount of healing, mana cost, and synergy with other priest cards, it was still a pretty exciting release.
Muster for Battle this one barely makes it, since "1/1" and "1/4" are numbers, they don't count, and the 1/4 weapon that it references already exists in the game. Notice that the "three" does count even though it technically is a number, since it's spelled out as a word.
Raven Idol works, totaling exactly 9 words, and is also a great example of a simple card that still offers a lot of interesting gameplay.
Some of the most common/popular submissions share similar characteristics. Many of them are Legendary, and many include similar mechanics. This competition aims to see more unique submissions.
Restrictions: Your card must NOT be legendary Your card must NOT contain the words: Deathrattle, Battlecry, Silence, Discover, Inspire Your card must NOT reference any "minion type" (Murloc, Mech, Dragon, Pirate, Demon, Beast) (however it can be one itself) Your card must NOT reference an existing card NO tokens allowed
Hearthstone has become a place for all sorts of people, creatures, and beings to come together and brawl. In this competition, we see the representation of each race (or nation) in the World of Warcraft universe represented in all the classes.
Restrictions:
The card must NOT be Legendary.

Your card must represent the capital city of one of the many races in World of Warcraft
Your card must not represent a capital city already existent in one of their class cards (i.e. Druid entries cannot be Night Elves because of Darnassus Aspirant)

THEME:Create a card that COULD have been in Curse of Naxxramas
RULES:
Card must be related to Naxxramas and or death, either mechanically(Deathrattle,Kel'Thuzad) or thematically(Spectral Knight).
Card CANNOT use mechanics created after Curse of Naxxramas (Discover, Inspire, Spare Parts, etc.)
Legendary cards submitted must be
-A) Neutral
-B) Related to the following characters: Maexxna, Loatheb, The Four Horsemen, Thaddius, Kel'Thuzad
EXAMPLES: Cards from Curse of Naxxramas are a great thing to look at, and these fan made cards could give you some ideas.

An example from within the game would be Al'Akir the Windlord. He's the only non-paladin/non-neutral in the game to have divine shield, yet he still manages to be very much a Shaman card. More cards like that- that slightly blur the class lines but don't break them. Another example would be Frost Shock. Those Shaman just love breaking the rules, apparently.
Permanent Spells
Most spells, when played, do an action and then promptly disappear. For example, Blessing of Kings gives a minion +5/+5, and then it's done. There's no continued effect. So forget that, because for this theme you'll be doing the exact opposite.
Your card must be a class spell that has a permanent and reoccurring effect on the game.
Make sure your card has some way to interact with it being played multiple times. Do the effects stack? Or does something special happen when played again (Like with Shadowform)?
The best examples for wording are tied with minions like Naga Sea Witch and Cult Master as they give a passive effect until removed. As a spell, this removal will never happen, so remember to balance accordingly.
Currently, Shadowform is the only example in Hearthstone, but The Mistcaller also gives a very good example with it's Battlecry. Regardless, I've included a very basic example of what your card might look like.
HEMET'S HAPPY HUNTING GROUNDS
When you think about worst legendary in hearthstone, one of the first things came in mind is Hemet Nesingwary. So let's make this sad useless dwarf more useful. And Tomb Spider will be happy too.
Theme-Specific Restrictions:
Your card must be a Beast, or have some sort of transform into a Beast effect, like Druid of the Claw or Tinkmaster Overspark
Your Beast must have at least 10-stat points in form of Attack+Health, but Attack must be 6 or lower, to not compete with other dwarf Big Game Hunter. But if you creating something like examples above, only tokens can have this restrictions, original cards can be anything.
You must use Beasts from World of Warcraft and real art for it, not screenshots or photos.
Examples: King Mukla, Druid of the Claw(bear form), Devilsaur(token), Savannah Highmane, etc.

Theme: Create a minion with low stats for a high cost who's card text makes u for its cost.
Entry Restrictions:
Your card must be a minion.
Your card must cost between 5/10 mana.
Your cad must have at least 4 less stats then double its cost (Exp: A 7 mana minion can be a 5/5, but not a 5/6 or higher).

Just because a minion died doesn't mean it can't be useful.
Theme-Specific Restrictions:
Your card's effect should be based on a minion (or minions) that died before it was played.
Your card's text must include the words "died this game." This can refer to a specific minion, a category of minions (e.g. pirates), a random minion, etc. The minion(s) can be yours, your opponent's, or both.
Your card can be a minion, weapon, or spell.
Examples:

But not Volcanic Drake, Cult Master, or Kel'Thuzad
Short and Sweet
Often in Hearthstone design we are tempted to create cards with complex effects. These can turn out well, however, what makes Hearthstone different from other card games like Magic is that its cards are extremely simple, but can result in interesting interactions. Hence the slogan, "Deceptively Simple, Insanely Fun." While it may seem like the challenge of card design is to make the most original and unique effect possible, sometimes, it boils down to being able to combine simple effects that have been seen before to produce interesting results.
Theme: Make the coolest spell card you can in 9 words or less.
Entry Restrictions:
Your card must be a class spell.
Your card's effect must be 9 words or less, not including numbers. See the examples for clarity.
Your card may not create or reference cards or tokens that do not currently exist in Hearthstone.
Your card may not use vague or one-of-a-kind wording that does not already exist in Hearthstone. [Example: Justicar Trueheart would not be valid for this competition, even if the effect was on a spell, since "A better one" is vague and had never been used before.]
Use syntax that is as correct as you can possibly make it. If you're not sure about something, reference existing cards. If you use incorrect syntax to fit your effect within the 9 word limit, whether or not you did it on purpose, your card will suffer. [For example, if you said "Draw 1 card" instead of "Draw a card" in order to count it for 2 words instead of 3, this would be considered as breaking a rule.]
To the Voters:
This competition is all about elegance and simplicity. This means that you should consider syntax and wording equally as important as balance, theme, viability, and flavor. If you see someone sacrificing simplicity for a more complex effect, they don't deserve your votes.
Conversely, not only should clunky cards be punished, but simple ones should be rewarded. If someone can make a card that makes you say "Nice!" in only a few words, it deserves your votes.

Outside the Box
Some of the most common/popular submissions share similar characteristics. Many of them are Legendary, and many include similar mechanics. This competition aims to see more unique submissions.

Your card must NOT reference any "minion type" (Murloc, Mech, Dragon, Pirate, Demon, Beast) (however it can be one itself)
