Hi, I'm Ethylbenzene bringing you another class based on A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones. As always Fans please enjoy, critics please comment, and any and all suggested feedback is welcome and wanted. Below is the hero, three hero powers, ten basic cards, six commos, five rares, three epics, and one legendary for set with all explanations, balancing, and flavor in spoilers tags. I appreciate all comments and please let me know which cards are your favorite, which you feel are bland, and which you feel should be rebalanced. Please refrain from any spoilers in the comments. If you haven't seen the previous week's heroes check them out below.
The sixth weeks hero is Lady Catelyn Tully representing the Tully class as great lords of Riverrun. Catelyn is a control hero and revolves around secrets(I was surprised too). Similar to the Lannister class, her hero power alternates between three hero powers, Family, Duty, and Honor. I know that Tully doesn't seem as secretive as some of the other classes (Baelish, Martell), but as Catelyn's legendary turned out to be a secret, secrets became her main selling point.
Hero and Hero Powers
Catelyn Tully- Similar to Stannis last week, Catelyn is the undisputed representative of the Tully clan in the books. Catelyn Tully is one of the main characters for the first few books, husband to Lord Eddard of the North, daughter to Lord Hoster of the Riverlands, sister to Lady Lysa of the East, unrequited love of Littlefinger, Master of Coin, and mother of Robb Stark, the King in the North. These relationships combined with her political acuity and clever sense of duty make her one of the most influential characters in the War of the Five Kings. She also serves as our eyes and ears to her son Robb. As the books wear on, Catelyn slowly loses her sanity and her children "perish", but her instincts remain as sharp as ever.
Family, Duty, Honor- Family, Duty, Honor is the motto of House Tully and describes the order of priorities for their members. Family comes first, then their duty, and last comes their personal honor. Similar to the Lannisters, Catelyn starts with a hero power (Family) and when she uses this hero power it switches randomly to one of the other two powers, Duty or Honor. Duty or Honor switch in similar fashion. Family heals all friendly characters by 1, similar to an AoE version of the Priest's Hero Power and represents helping her allies. When Duty is used, the player picks a card to discard and then draws a card. This represents the costs of duty, and serves as a useful strategy for the Tully player. Honor gives your hero Taunt for a turn. When your hero has Taunt, similarly to when a unit has Taunt, the enemies have to attack your hero or a minion with Taunt. This is a dangerous strategy, but it can save your minions damage for one turn it makes the Warrior jealous.
Legendary Card
Kiss of Life- The Kiss of Life is typically given by a priest of R'hllor and it imbues life into an otherwise dead human. Thoros used it many times to bring back Beric Dondarrion, the Lightning Lord, and Beric used it to bring back Catelyn as Lady Stoneheart to lead the Brotherhood without Banners in revenge for the Red Wedding. True to source material, upon death the Kiss of Life revives Catelyn as Lady Stoneheart. In practice, it acts as a hybrid between Ice Block and Lord Jaraxxus. Upon taking fatal damage, Catelyn is replaced with Lady Stoneheart(after she takes the damage so Lady Stoneheart will always start with 20 HP). Lady Stoneheart has 20 HP, a step up from Jaraxxus, but has no weapon. Her hero power Hang destroys a random enemy minion, basically a Deadly Shot. As Lady Stoneheart struggles speaking, both her hero power and spells will cost double what they usually do. It should be noted that somehow getting the card twice (through Chromaggus ) has no effect besides making your spells cost quadruple.
Epic Cards
Raging Trident- Raging Trident makes your hero immune for a turn, similar to the immunity that Mal'Ganis and Ice Block give. While 5 mana might seem like WAY too much mana to pay for such a small effect, this card can be effectively combined with the Honor Hero Power to give your hero Taunt and immune for a turn for 7-mana. It's a very expensive combo, but it can cause you to take almost no damage for a turn.
River Guardian- River Guardian is a secret that requires other secrets to be in play. But it does summon a 6/7 Taunt for 4-mana so the effect itself is very powerful. It also acts as a protection against cards that destroy secrets...so I guess it counters Flare.
Brynden Blackfish- Brynden Blackfish is the uncle of Catelyn, Edmure, and Lysa. Brynden is a famous war veteran and head of Robb's genius outriders. He knew what was happening before anyone else, and therefore he will allow you to play your cards early (the discount). Brynden costing 5 won't allow any fancy plays, but he will let you play some low cost cards for less.
Rare Cards
Blind Duty- Similar to Fist of Jaraxxus, but can work because this hero actually has ways to choose which cards they discard. Works as very good conditional card draw. Obviously synergizes with...Duty.
Funeral Arrow- The staple direct damage spell of the Tully class.
Riverrun Captain- Riverrun Captain is a way to get card draw from your secrets. It is horribly inconsistant as you can't trigger your own secrets, but if you have it protected it can easily cycle every secret.
High Heart Specter- The High Heart Specter is a 4/3 for 3 minion that allows you to look at the top 3 cards of your deck. This doesn't allow you to draw any cards and it doesn't give a physical advantage, but it lets you plan out your next moves because you know what the next three cards are, minimizing RNG. The body is also very solid.
Frey Man-at-Arms- Yes, I know Freys are canon evil but they are technically part of the Riverlands even if they do end up trying to rebel every 20 years or so. The Freys enact a toll from everyone to pass over their bridge at the crossing. This manifests itself into giving the enemy a cost to have their minions attack, an Overload of 2 mana. While he has no immediate effect for 6-mana, like Troggzor the Earthinator, if you leave him on the board too long you will lose the game.
Common Cards
Inpenetrable Halls- A secret that gets better the better the opponent is doing. It's identical to an Unleash the Hounds that summons Shieldbearers.
Black Harren's Curse- Harrenhall was originally built for King Harren of the Iron Islands, and upon finishing it it was beseiged by Aegon the Conqueror's dragons. Ever since every ruler of Harrenhal has been dispatched of in horrible ways, the exception being the current lord Petyr Baelish who has never set foot in the castle and never plans to. Black Harren's Curse is a conditional Polymorph, because Polymorph was a bit too powerful to give to this class.
Familial Ties- Self-explanatory.
Orphan of the Crossroads- The Orphans of the Crossroads are orphans protected by the Brotherhood without Banners from the War of Five Kings. As a card, they activate your hero power. This becomes especially powerful when your hero is Lady Stoneheart, as your hero power is now cast for (1) mana. One thing to note is that they don't lock the hero power, so you can play this minion and cast your hero power. As this minion was designed before the Inspire mechanic, it might have to be reworked in the future.
Seaguard Archer- This card can be dangerous.
Knight of the Hallow Hill- The Knights of the Hallow Hill, also known as the Brotherhood without Banners, is an outlaw organization that hounds the Riverlands and Crownlands, first fighting for the people as King's Men, and later fighting against the Freys under Lady Stoneheart's leadership. The Knight of the Hollow Hill has perpetual Stealth if you have a Secret, similar to outlaws, and it will be very difficult to remove them unless you trigger or destroy the secrets (or use AoE).
Basic Cards
River Supplies- Expensive Card Draw
Trident's Fury- If you can sense a pattern here, I'm giving a 3-mana discount to some spells for this being a Secret.
Guerilla Strike- Guerilla Strike is a very interesting card that can only trigger if the enemy has a minion on the board when he/she plays a minion. It forces the newly summoned minion to attack one of the enemies minions, usually killing at least one of them and damaging the other.
Poison Waters- Poison Waters acts as a hard removal for the Tully class. Poison is the equivalent of "Destroy any minion damaged by this minion."
Red Wedding- Yes this might be part of the Frey's arsenal, but as the Freys are under Tully rule Catelyn gets to play the card that causes her death. Red Wedding is the ultimate control card for this deck, and acts as a finisher similar to Alexstrasza. Tully has numerous ways to survive with low Health and near the end of the game can use this spell to switch health with the opponent and then burst him/her down with minions. And just when you thought you were going to win the War of Five Kings...
Lord Edmure Tully- Edmure might not be the soldier his uncle is, the harsh hand his father was, or the diplomat his sister was, but that doesn't make him any worse a Great Lord. He will risk everything for his family, but he will risk even more to protect every man, woman, and child who names him lord. Similar to Ned Stark, this makes him a poor player in the Game of Thrones, but a refreshing humanity in the world of Westeros. As a card he is a protector, taking damage for his allied minions. For 3 mana, he protects against 4 damage + any damage, letting your other units trade against larger units and survive.
River Lord- This card actually looks better than it is, as the only cards that can activate on your turn are River Supplies, Trident's Fury, and Kiss of Life. You can combo this card with one of those for a 10-mana combo, but the fact that it costs 10-mana balances out the reward.
Riverrun Maester- This card doesn't synergize as directly with the Hero Power Family as Blind Duty and Raging Trident/Spiky Trout do with Duty and Honor respectively, but it is a very good card for long matches where you have a lot of minions. When this card is on the field, if a minion with full health is healed it gains +1 health instead. Therefore if the family hero power is used, all friendly minions will always gain 1 health either as healing or a buff.
Spiky Trout- A sort of deterrant when combined with the Hero Power Honor.
Hoster's Guard- This minion puts 2 secrets from ANY class onto the field. Obviously the Tully and Mage secrets would be best, but Baelish and Hunter secrets would also be pretty good. If the average cost of a secret is 2.5 mana, this card is a 3 mana 6/5 that draws 2 cards. Obviously it doens't actually work like that and in reality I don't see this being played because of the insane cost and subpar statline.
Sidenote: Usually when a character doesn't appear in one class, they will appear in another(why Catelyn didn't appear with the Starks). Lysa Tully is the exception to this rule and probably will never appear. If anyone has an idea or concept for her, please let me know as I have no idea what to do for her card and I don't think she deserves to be a Tully.
So there is the 6th hero, Catelyn Tully of Riverrun. She's a very Control-oriented hero revolving around secrets. I hope you enjoyed reading and please leave any comments below :) Thanks.
