Do any of the other semi-finalists that didn't make the cut feel a bit empty and aimless? I've been so obsessively working on the class these last three weeks; constantly thinking of new ideas at the weirdest moments and writing them down.
@Iceater: Nice concept, but might be a tad strong to get a 4/2 out for 1 mana that might actually benefit your cause. If it were to be 'an enemy minion', it'd be a more interesting card.
@Master Plan: As you're spending 9 mana and are presumably in turn 9, you don't need to cycle 30 cards. You'd redo some of them. Also, 30 is a lot and this wouldn't be fun to play against: Your opponent just sees you picking cards 60 seconds long. Yawn. I do love the theme and the feeling and it fits your class perfectly. Why not reduce it to Scheme 10? Which is already incredibly powerful. You could even make it Draw a Card afterwards. It'd make it an effective Master Plan: pulling out the right spell/minion at the right time.
@Evil-o-Matic: This was something I was missing in your class. This would work really well with your scheme mechanic. Absolute love it.
@End of Hope: I liked this card and I still do. Is it cumulative? Does it stack?
@Frozen Veins and @Wild Cryomancer: Both decent cards.
@Entomb: 0 Mana for Immunity at your disposal is way too strong. It doesn't buy your enemy a turn, since it buys you a turn to draw that perfect AoE wipe or killer spell or big taunt minion, whatever. Should be at least 4 mana.
@Soulbind: I like the potentials of this when cast upon an enemy. Do you silence it to prevent you from getting a Lichling and while doing that also removing its own card text? As it is now, it would be a bit boring to cast it on your own minion, kill it in a trade and get a 5/5 for 4 ... Meh. May I suggest the following: 2M "Choose an enemy minion, if it survives until the start of your next turn then summon a 5/5 Lichling for you". Something of a Corruption and Blessed Wisdom? You get me?
Also, anyone interested in my Expandion/Adventure card set for the Trade Prince. Would it be OK to post it here after everyone rounded up?
That's part of the problem with this contest concept. With the "normal" contest you invest some time sure but not the hours upon hours it takes on the classes... especially those that move through the rounds. When you don't make it there's dozens of hours of time that just blow up with nothing left to show for it. :/
I know the feeling. During Phase 2 and 3, I didn't even bother looking at the card design competion. Now it's like, "what, only 1 card a week? What do I do now?"
Hey guys, out of curiosity here, what'd I do (or didn't do) in phase 3 that got me eliminated? I mean, I was number 2 in phase 1, and had the most votes going into Phase 2, so what happened? Just wanted to know for any possible future competitions like this.
@Asylum: I must say, when you first posted your class, I didn't like it at all. I turned completely around. It looks like a lot of fun and I started to love the weird, more realistic and out of tune (when compared to Warcraft) artwork.
In general, good Legendaries with a unique effect, cost 1 more when compared to minions that share their vanilla base stats. Perhaps Skeram could be 5?
I see the value in Back to Work but not really the flavour. Dark Iron Marauder fits very well with the BRM trend of "# of minions died".
For Sale should read "Destroy a minion, and receive Coins equal to its mana cost. If you target an enemy minion this costs (8) more." I like the card a lot. Get some coins once your finished with your hired goons or use it as lategame removal.
Demolition derby is a great card. Really fun design. Goblin Mugger is a good tech card. Even when it takes off 6+ armor its body isn't too threatening. Very balanced. You can compare Technomage with Hemet except for mechs. Decent tech card. Doesn't match the class very strongly but neither does Screwjank clunker or soot spewer.
Venture Shedder is a class specific shedder. To add some flavour how about "Deathrattle: Summon a random 1-cost minion. Recieve Coins equal to its Attack." Could be Health instead of attack. Don't have to use my idea but it may help you come up with one. Summoning two 1-cost minions is fine too.
Flayweather is very similar to King Krush in purpose but is easier to play. The best appeal of this card is its name/aesthetic similar to Tirion. Tiron is strong but doesn't have crazy unique effects just like Flayweather, but his sounds, animations, etc can make him cool. Overall a good card.
I noticed that Lich has a lot of 1-mana spells, and GvG is known for 1-mana spare parts. I was thinking the GvG legendary could be something like "5 mana 4/5 Battlecry: If you cast 4 or more 1-mana spells this turn, do something awesome" as a win condition for mech/aggro/gazlowe/whatever Lich decks. I was wondering if you guys think this is a good idea, and/or what the effect should be?
Gandling seems aesthetically unfitting imo, and doesn't have any strong direction designed into it. What niche does it fill? Hear are some brainstormed ideas I have since you've said you're a bit stuck.
4 mana 6/6, "Battlecry: Cast Corruption on adjacent minions." He's a darkmaster right? Plays into a slow control play-style with little minions. Works with deathrattle too.
7 mana 5/6, "Battlecry: Return ALL minions to their owners hand. They cost (0). They cannot be played until the start of your turn." I'm not 100% certain of the balance but it matches his ability in WOW to teleport players away. Can delay your opponent even further with your freeze spells, reuse battlecries, and some other neat interaction that I can't think of. Mill Lich :D?
Here are two other battlecry ideas.
Battlecry: Summon two 1/1 Flesh Horrors. Flesh Horror - Deathrattle: Give enemy minions -2/-2.
Battlecry: Add two 'Curse of the Darkmaster' cards to your opponent's hand. Curse - 2 mana, While this is in your hand, your minions have -1/-1. Take 1 damage at the start of your turn.
Work: Sorry, but nope :P I like the name and art though. Maybe something like "Make a friendly minion that hasn't attacked this turn attack a random enemy character". Kind of like a pseudo charge and could also counter "freeze" slightly.
Sale: Destroy a minion and receive its mana cost in Coins. If it's an enemy minion, this card costs (8) more."
Derby: *Derby, not derby
Mugger: You could probably up it to 4/4.
Venture: *Shredder
Moyd: Too cluttery. Go with 5/6 "Charge. Immune while attacking" maybe?
I found the image as the TCG art for "Malefic Necromancer". After some looking around, I discovered that there are actually a TON of necromancers that look exactly the same as Gothik (bone helm, long white beard), so do you think it would be excusable for me to use the same art and change the name to Varidus the Flenser? Or maybe Grimkor the Wicked, and change the effect to summon two 4/4 Skeletons?
Please remember to indicate to me, preferably in this topic or by PM, which six (6) example cards you want to use for the Final Poll Topic gallery. I need to know this by the deadline tomorrow if I want to get the Final Poll Topic up on time. Also, nobody seems to have had any objection to the format I suggested, so awesome, but there are a couple of other points I would't mind some last-minute thoughts on:
1) The number of example cards. Is 6 sufficient or would we like a higher number like 8? If you think 8, then give me 8 example cards, but I'll only use the last two if everybody agrees to 8. Does this sound fair?
2) Token display. If you want to include an example card with one or more tokens, I would like to include spoilers as part of the gallery including those tokens where appropriate. For example, since the Lich class has a token Hero Power, immediately following the gallery row that includes the hero powers I'll include a spoiler with the token power before moving onto the example cards. Likewise, when I get into the example cards, immediately following any row that includes a card with a token, there will be a spoiler with whatever token cards are produced by cards on that row. Does this sound fair?
3) Final Poll format. Since there are only four of you now, Murloc and I had been planning on making it a single-choice poll where the results are hidden until the end, as opposed to the usual poll format of allowing multiple-choices and allowing current results to be viewed at any time, but we want to make sure this is agreeable. Somewhere in the middle also works, like a multiple-choice poll where the results are hidden until the end. I'd just like to make sure we have your input, if you have any thoughts or preferences.
These types of things are supposed to be what makes Lich unique, as a 3-spell trigger is hard but not unachievable. I'm thinking of changing the effect to summoning two 4/5's, would that make it at least more reliable if you succeed?
These types of things are supposed to be what makes Lich unique, as a 3-spell trigger is hard but not unachievable. I'm thinking of changing the effect to summoning two 4/5's, would that make it at least more reliable if you succeed?
The trigger itself is unique but the ability is not. It's like a very specific Illidan that summons only two 4/5s. I would be cool if the tigger unleashed some cool effect like resurrect two random friendly minions, or "At the end of your turn, summon a random monstrosity based on number of spells cast this turn." If you cast 1 spell it can be a trash 1/1, if you cast 5 spells you get Unstable Creation, at the end of the turn destroy all minions except Gandling. I'm just spit-balling ideas but I think there's a lot of directions you can take to make Gandling unique. Also yeah a lot of necromancers lookalike. I think its fine if you rename him.
These ideas look pretty cool! I really like the resurrecting friendly minions idea. How about: At the end of your turn, if you've cast at least 2 spells, resummon a random friendly minion that died this game as a 3/5 Lichling? (Like soulbind)
EDIT: Never mind, this was too long. Going with the monstrosity idea.
The random monstrosity idea sounds pretty cool too, but I don't want the monstrosities to have wildly different effects, since I don't want this to become a sort of 5-cards-in-one thing. I'd go as far as like Charge, or Taunt, or Spell damage, or whatever, but nothing too complex.
I was thinking of making the biggest monstrosity you can get into a Flesh Titan. I wanted to make it alone a Legendary (Thyrm). To do so, I would have to change the card to its creator, Prince Navarius. I'm not a lore guy, does anyone know if that deviates too much from the "Lich" sphere of viability?
I think you hit a wall with your choices for the art on some of these cards. Even though you are inserting the mech theme, I think it just takes one step too far from your previous visual representation. I found that it turned me off slightly.
I get that, especially for Ominous Transmission I couldn't really find any satisfactory art, and to be honest I'm not even really that confident about the effect if it's too meh. I just knew for this set I wanted to offer a new way to get Secrets out, but I also wanted a Mech synergy spell, so that's what I ended up with thinking might be cool mechanically and thematically. Surveillance Drone makes more sense thematically if you recognize it as Observer art from Startcraft, and the 3N16MA Machine is cuter and makes more sense thematically with it's flavor text: "It's supposed to predict your future and output the data in binary, but for some reason the readouts are always all 0's." Very glad you like the class otherwise, though, and yeah I agree I do particularly like the Deja Vu and Infinite Drake BRM cards. =)
In general, good Legendaries with a unique effect, cost 1 more when compared to minions that share their vanilla base stats. Perhaps Skeram could be 5?
I'm just worried about making him cost more because then it might be too much of a hassle to combo him with the kinds of minions he'd be really useful with. I'd rather lower his stats a bit than make him cost more for that reason. I thought I could get away with a 4/4 for (4), just on stat point below vanilla, because the effect can sort of be a downside too for a lot of different kinds of minions, restricting your overall deck style if you want to avoid anti-synergy. Otherwise, glad I was able to change your mind! ^_^ I'll probably get the Seer up in its own dedicated topic after we've crowned a competition winner.
I really like Ominous Transmission. It's so aesthetically pleasing. I also like Skeram the way he is. Very unique ability, not too difficult to combo with, and could be a downside. What happens with Battlecries when Skeram is in play?
Okay, here's the Legendary, based on your idea. The balance was sort of all over the place, and 5 tokens is a lot to keep track of, but here's what I got:
0 / 1 / 2 / 3 / 4+ spells respectively:
The exponential scaling on these cards was intentional, but I'm not sure how it turned out.
If Thyrm isn't "thematically viable", then I'll replace it with "Flesh Titan" and make all the tokens into basics.

It's been nerfed to 6 mana. I got the "Your opponent draws a card" is worth 2 mana from Naturalize.
ah ok, that makes sense.

It's kind of... wierd. like a cool idea, but it just doesn't strike me as something very good in actual game, mainly due to the 3 spell trigger.
