A while back, I reminded a couple of people that a custom class contest would be coming soon. With a suitable break having elapsed from the last contest and quarantine still in effect, the Custom Class contest returns to Hearthpwn!
This is, as the title suggests, a preliminary thread just to go over a couple of things, as, many of you know, Demon Hunter has changed how new classes are handled. Say what you will about the Demon Hunter class itself, but the fact that Blizzard added a new class is great news for us custom card creators.
The best thing is that this lays a precedent for the number of cards we need to create: just 45. This is a far smaller number of cards than was required for past contests, which often numbered well over 60. In my head, I split the contest into just 4 weeks:
Week One are the 10 Basic cards.
Week Two, 10 of the "Initiate" set.
Week Three, the remaining 10 "Initiate" cards.
Week Four, 15 Ashes of Outland cards, or whatever happens to be the latest expac at the time of the contest.
Just 45 cards means a whole lot less pressure on both the contestants and myself, as I will be again running the contest.
As for the precedents Demon Hunter has set:
1-mana Hero Powers
Lifesteal in Basic
Rush in Basic
Any others I missed
That sort of stuff, it's fair game. (Though one should take care with 1-mana Hero Powers, as can be seen with the current state of DH's overall power)
Like the previous contest, we'll bring all contestants forward with each wing until the one with the highest total votes is the victor.
If you have any comments or concerns, be sure to let them be heard! I don't have a date set in stone for the start of this contest, but do expect it sometime early-mid June.
At last ! I'm very excited for this new competition !
10 cards/week sounds reasonable to me but for the last week I'm not sure that AoO is a great fit. The expansion's theme was chosen specificaly to work with the flavor of Demon Hunter and it seems to be part of the new class addation process. I'm not sure of what would be the best way to incorporate that element into the competition (designing a complete expansion is obviously too much work) but I have a few ideas.
The easy way is to let contestantes choose one Hearthstone expansion that fits their custom class. It would be like their class was introduced at the release of that expansion. The hard way is to ask contestants to outline a new expension that would serve as an introduction to their class. Not a full design, just flavor guidlines.
This could be integrated into the design aspect of the competition in the form of sample cards for each official hearthstone class. Maybe it could be it's own week, with 1 or 2 cards for each class, or maybe it could be 3 to 5 cards each week along with that week's phase.
This might not be necessary at all to the competition but I think it would be cool if contestants had a little more control over the final expansion design.

I like the idea of that, very much so. However, I would prefer choosing a past expansion to slot your class into. I don't think creating an entire premise of an expansion is necessary to make your class fit in, but I do agree Ashes of Outland is limiting to the flavour of certain potential custom classes.
Just a quick update: The start date will continue to be in June, but the time limit won't kick into effect until there are 4 or more people who have joined in. Once at least 4 people make the decision to join, a short grace period follows, and then the week-long deadline comes into effect.
No, it is the same as Demon Hunter's Initiate set. In the past, we'd make custom classes Basic, Classic, Naxxramas, etc. etc. as if that class was part of Hearthstone' initial release. However, with Demon Hunter now a 10th class, we are using its release process. This time, your custom classes will be released in the exact same fashion DH has.
Any rules we can know in advance about the class? *I mean stuff like "must be a WoW thematic" or something*
Thanks for the advance, man ^^
We won't force you to adhere strictly to WoW canon, but we will have recommendations that you should still have some passing references to WoW-related places. Any other rules thus far considered are in the opening post.
Also, as a general reply to all those who expressed interest, I will say that this is contrary to the class/adventure poll we had a long time ago. I can only guess voters wanted to see an adventure, but the card creators preferred a custom class. Regardless, I'm glad members of the Hearthpwn old guard and new people alike are showing up.
if we stick to an expansion with specific card pool rules -like, Kobolds and Catacombs requiring a spellstone and a Legendary weapon, League of Evil requiring a scheme or a twin spell, or Saviors of Uldum requiring a quest-, do our classes have to stick with them as well?

Well since DH got a Dormant minion but no Prime legendary in AoO, I'd argue that contestants should be allowed to choose which of the the expension's card cycles they want to use.

In regards to this, I would *prefer* at least one cycle being done. For example, if you did choose Uldum, every class gets a Quest while yours doesn't. From a balance perspective, that can potentially be a huge detriment. However, I am aware that while DH did not get a prime, they got two extra legendaries. Altruis ended up being broken, while Kayn is strong.
I believe it is a fair compromise to say that your class needs at least one all-class (all-class meaning all classes share it OR is either an League of Explorers/League of Evil cycle) card cycle. So, Spellstone OR Legendary weapon for KAC, Quest OR Plague/singleton legendary for Uldum, Legendary Dragon + Breath spell for DoD, Lackey/Twinspell for RoS, etc.
I will clarify this point in the main submission thread.

I like it the challenge. See if you can work with this HERO.
SCRY lets you look at the top 2 cards of your deck and place any of them at the bottom of your deck.
[deck]Deck ID or Code[/deck]Card Name Pyramid shine
I would probably take part in a competition like this.
I will also take part in the competition ! And this time, I will try to make it to the end and not stop in the middle !
My Fan-Class : The King
Is it classic set or what?

Nice! I've been super looking forward to one of these :)
If that's possible, I'd like to compete too.
Sounds interesting, I'll try to enter this, too!
