Welcome, one and all, to Quest Givers Anonymous, a Hearthpwn Custom Adventure Competition! This is the Discussion Thread, where you can bounce ideas off of each other. As usual, try to offer advice alongside asking for some. It will go a long way, especially in a contest of this size! If you were looking for the Submission Thread, head on over here.
You may also find it useful to ask a question or two on the Hearthpwn Discord. The mods are there and can try to answer any concerns you may have.
For those who have been playing Hearthstone for a bit longer, you may remember "Adventures", the singleplayer experience that preceded the Dungeon Run-based content we have now. Newer players may also recall the singleplayer content released alongside Knights of the Frozen Throne; that is an Adventure.
Quest Givers Anonymous gives you the opportunity to show off your card creation skills on a much larger scale. Over the next few months, contestants will:
Follow an outline based on the Blackrock Mountain adventure. Create two boss decks and a final boss deck for each wing. Each wing will take up a phase and each phase lasts 2 weeks. The fourth and fifth wings have 3 bosses and a final boss, instead.
A boss deck entails a mixture of cards found in-game, some custom-made cards, and, most importantly, the Boss' Hero Power.
Furthermore, Adventures have rewards! As such, for each boss, there will be card rewards for a player who defeats a boss.
Hopefully, this quick overview gives you an idea of what to expect going forward. Other more technical questions will be addressed in the FAQ section below.
We are on to Phase Four!
Once again, there are two challenges:
One of your showcase cards must not use any keywords, but must be a minion.
Galakrond's Awakening is a little different from past adventures where only the Heroic fights have you play as a base hero with a deck you construct yourself. Some of you (I think mostly just me) have already had a few boss fights where your hero is replaced with a special one. As such, one of your boss fights must incorporate this mechanic. Furthermore, this alternate hero will be automatically showcased (along with its Hero Power) as a 4th card. If it up to you if you want to make a special deck for the player to use in this fight.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly am I making?
You will be making an entire Adventure singleplayer expansion.
The number of bosses and card rewards are the same as Blackrock Mountain.
In Blackrock Mountain, there are:
For the Neutrals: 6 commons, 2 rares, no epics, and 5 legendaries. For class cards: one common and one rare for each class.
I have to follow the reward structure of Blackrock Mountain, but do I have to follow the exact order too? For example, Wing One has a neutral, a Rogue common, a Priest rare, etc. etc.
No. You can reward players with your cards in any order you want, so long as the class-neutral and rarity ratios stay the same, and you follow how each boss rewards one card per victory.
How do I present my creation?
You entire submission goes in the Submission Thread.
The Boss' portrait and Hero Power go in a spoiler. Boss decklists must be listed under the same spoiler. Use a separate spoiler for each deck. If your boss deck has any custom cards, they must also go in the same spoiler.
For each wing, you may present up to three cards outside of a spoiler. (Each wing will usually have either five or six cards.)
Furthermore, you are allowed a short paragraph introducing your Adventure, or continuing where you left off in future weeks.
In the past, due to a large number of entries, we'd have a public poll and a percentage of that phase would move on, while the rest were eliminated.
The public poll takes place in a separate voting thread, just like in a weekly competition.
Depending on the number of entries, we can continue to do that, or, if people prefer and there are fewer entries, votes will instead be accumulated throughout phases and no one is eliminated.
Am I allowed to work on future wings before a Phase starts?
Yes, but, there may be a challenge or an extra requirement thrown your way which might force you to redo some parts.
Am I allowed to work with someone else?
Yes. You may work with one other person provided they have a Hearthpwn account. You will need to inform the moderators before you team up.
Do I have to make heroic versions of each boss' Hero Power and deck?
No, but if you do, they need to be under a spoiler.
Some bosses have special mechanics, like starting with a card. How do I denote this?
Simply state that the boss does in its decklist spoiler.
Do I have to state which boss has a class challenge?
Yes.
Do I need to introduce a keyword?
No.
Do boss decks require at least one custom card?
No, you can have a boss deck with no custom cards at all.
Am I allowed to have additional fancy graphics in my submission?
You are allowed a single, simple banner. In the past, several talented individuals were able to dazzle voters with their artistic and photo manipulation skills. While the moderator teams wants everyone to compete to the best of their abilities, it was decided by the previous moderator team to not allow too many additional graphics. We will honour that decision. Whether a banner is allowed or not is up to the discretion of the moderator team. An example of an acceptable banner can be found here.
The exception to this rule are the dialogue boxes that pop up during Adventures and other singleplayer content. You may have a reasonable number of them, if you choose to add them in.
I have some ideas for extra things! How do I implement them?
"Bonus" or "secret" battles, sort of like the cow king: You can have bonus battles, but you may not break from the number of bosses you are supposed to do for that wing. For example, Wing One in Blackrock Mountain has 3 bosses. You may do two bosses and then one bonus battle, but not 3 bosses and an additional battle.
New heroes (like Arthas), card backs, etc.: You can add as many additional non-card rewards as you want. For the most part, these do not affect any technical aspects of this competition. These must be place under a spoiler, however, as having many of these would fall under having too many fancy graphics.
What are the real-life rewards?
You will earn the special silver card creator border and, as per tradition, you may accept an interview from the mod team that gets posted on the front page. Lastly, a small bundle of packs will be in order.
Competition Process
The Competition Process, as stated above, is slated to be one wing per two weeks with a voting period of 3 days, leaving a total of 11 days for card creation. Five wings will take a total of 10 weeks. This is a tentative estimate and the moderators will be continually monitoring the flow of the competition.
Phase One, Wing One: January 4th — January 16th Voting period: January 16th — January 18th
Phase Two, Wing Two: January 18th — January 30th Voting period: January 30th — February 1st
Phase Three, Wing Three: February 1st — February 13th Voting period: February 13th — February 18th
Phase Four, Wing Four: February 18th — February 29th Voting period: February 29th — March 1st
Phase Five, Wing Five: March 1st — March 14th Voting period: February 14th — March 16th
Discussion Topic Rules
As usual, we have a few basic rules. They're the same as the rules in a Weekly Competition, so most of you should have no problem here.
To make sure that everything runs smoothly, we need to reserve the Submission Topic for submissions only. Everything else goes here. What is everything else, you might ask?
Rules or Process. Do you have a question about the competition's process? Do you need clarification about one of the entry requirements? Are you not sure whether your entry adhered to the rules? Ask here!
Feedback or Ideas. Do you have some ideas you'd like to run by others before settling on one? Do you need help balancing or wording your entry? Do you need help finding art that will fit your card? Or do you just want feedback from the community on your entry? You're in the right place! Remember, although you are allowed to make minor tweaks to your entry after you've submitted it, you're only allowed one submission per week, so make sure that you've settled on your card for sure beforehand.
Discussion! Do you have thoughts on other people's entries? Are there directions you don't like that you're seeing too many people take? Or directions you'd like to see more people take? Would you like to help others and contribute to a greater community understanding of Hearthstone card design and balance? This is where you want to be!
All of that said, please refrain from the following:
Posting TONS of Ideas. Discussion topics become an absolute mess if everybody is posting a dozen different ideas. Please post not more than 3 distinct ideas at a time. Any more than that and we'll have to delete your post.
Advertising Your Entry. As a rule of thumb, please don't pop in here just to advertise your entry only to never be heard from again. This includes only asking short, generic questions like "Thoughts?" or "Do you think this is interesting?". Yes, getting feedback on your entry is one of the purposes of this topic, but we're not just here for other people to help you. We're here for you all to help each other.
Plagiarism. Many people post their ideas here before finalizing them in the submission topic. Directly plagiarizing those ideas to post in the submission topic yourself is absolutely not acceptable.
Don't forget, for the 4th and 5th wings, you will need 4 bosses in each wing. Most bosses (in Blackrock Mountain) in these two wings rewarded just 1 card.
Already made most of my entry, except decks and heroic:
Wing 4: The Ironclad Cove
Showcase Cards
First Boss: Mr. Smite
Mr. Smite, the old captain Greenskin's first mate, hasn't taken well being completely removed from World of Warcraft! His deck will feature lots of weapons obviously, but I'll try to take a different approach than Pirates. Maybe enrage? After defeating him, you'll obtain Angrath two taurens from his tripulation, to boost even more your pirate decks!
Cookie, the Defia's chief, doesn't take lightly the task of protecting Edwin's treasure. With his Mill deck and Hero Power, he'll try to defeat you doing what he does best: filling you up! His defeat will give you some of the most evasive murlocs, to help you swarm your opponents.
I was thinking about the best bosses of Galakrond Awakening, and Khadgar vs. Avalanchan came to my mind. I love to replay that battle from time to time just to see in how many turns I can defeat the boss and which overpowered combo I can make. So, I wanted to make Vanessa similar. That's why she'll have a deck focused in customizing your hero power. The following cards are the ones her deck will be formed with:
Hero Power explanation
You'll start with a useless hero power. When you play one of the above cards (except starting again, of course) you'll add an Enchantment to your hero power. Targetting your hero power will let you use the enchanted effects. However, there's a limit of 3 enchantments. If 4rth enchantment is added, you'll lose the oldest one (the first). Enchantments can stack, including Hakkar's cost, and if one Hakkar's blood leaves your Hp cost will reduce.
Vanessa is tasked with retrieving the treasure while the others get their loot from the last boss fight, but she gets surprised by an apparition of nothing less than her father! Of course she won't like to fight him, but while being under Greenskin's service she doesn't has any other chance... VanCleef will have a combo deck with cheap cards to support his images while Vanessa will have a deck stuffed with cards to concoct her poison. After Edwin vanishes, you'll obtain a ghastly reard and, at last, the treasure! Or so it seems...
Just when you thought, you'll bath in riches, the Ashvane company enters the scene! Priscilla is trying to steal what's yours (well, it's yours from five minutes ago). Expect Stonetusk Boars (Yeah, it's one meme battle) and the likes from her deck. But, at turn 5...
Boss Behaviour
At turn 5 (or when you defeat her), she'll play the following card (she has it from the start of the game, but is unremovable):
More Dialogue:
Azshara will appear and transform Ashvane into a hideous beast, changing her Hero Power, restoring all her life and replacing her deck:
Of course, if you manage to steal Azshara, you can also transform yourself!
Defeating Ashvane will grant you access to her forces. But, don't think everything ended! During the battle Azshara stealed the treasure to lure you into her realm, the Eternal Palace!
Ending Dialogue:
Card Rewards (Class Challenge: Paladin):
Anyway, that's all for now. Maybe I'll change a few cards, like the warrior's coomon (not too interesting so maybe change it for a Burst effecte since I already have the murloc without keywords) and the legendary. Oh, and I'll put dialogues on the same image for easier formatting (sorry for the long amount, wanted to do a bit of storytelling in some parts).
Hey everyone ! Before I get to Wing 4 (which will be a good one imo), I need to talk about something I messed up. You see, I already made 2 Hunter cards (Shade Chaser in wing 1 and Snuffed Light in wing 3) but I forgot to make one of them a class challenge ! To correct this, I'd like to switch the two rewards of my boss 1 of wing 3 (The Crow) so that Paranoïa (the Paladin secret) is the completion reward and Snuffed Light is the reward of the Hunter class challenge. Thus the Paladin class challenge will be this phase.
So let's get to it ! This wing wasn't teased, unlike previous ones, because I wanted to keep it kinda secret. You see, while the adventurers were busy fighting in the last wing, Broll Bearmantle went to the Emerald Dream to ask for the Emerald dragonflight's help in this time of need. What he found tho, was that the Dream had been corrupted from the inside. The Nightmare Dragonflight is now the threat adventurers will have to deal with !
Emerald Dreams and Nightmares
"In the deepest forest lays a grove of emerald, a flourishing domain of ethereal peace. But the place has been cast in a gloomy slumber and there's no comming back for those who fall asleep. Hurry adventurers before the land despairs ! Come to follow your dreams and face your worse nightmares !"
This adventure is inspired by the Emerald Dream and Emerald Nightmare, as well as the events of the War Against the Nightmare. It will feature a new keyword : Phantasm which lets you add an extra copy of the card to your deck. Players would be given 3 copies of common/rare/epic cards with Phantasm and 2 copies of legendary cards with the keyword. The number of cards in a deck would still be 30 as Phantasm would only affect the number of copies of a card that can be added to a deck.
Wing 3: The Puppetmasters
Comming out from the shadows are the ones who pull the strings. The mist, the nightmares, it's all their fault ! But are they the real master minds or just agents sent here by a more powerful evil ?
Can you bring the schemers down ?
Showcase cards :
Boss 1 : The Corrupted Nest
Eggs anyone ? Yeah that's pretty much the deck.
Rewards (class challenge: Druid)
Boss 2 : Dragons of Nightmare
The idea is that there is an endless flight of dragons to fight here.
Reward
Boss 3 : Nythendra
Is it a dragon that controls a swarm of insects or a swarm of insects that- Wait, I think I don't actually want to know.
Rewards (Class challenge: Paladin) :
Boss 4 : Nightmare Ysera
The queen is here and she brought are subjects for a fight.
Rewards:
I've got to say, I'm very pleased with how this adventure is coming together. I'm also happy to see my creation getting a lot of votes and I'm conviced that the feedback I've gotten through the competition helped me a lot with polishing my creation. So yeah tell me what you think of this one !
This round features a battle in which Broken Ones, Ogres and Lost Ones try to conquer a part of the forest guarded by a Genesaur. Of course, Garithos joins the battle to claim that piece of land for the Alliance.
(This plot basically allows me to feature many races which would've been left out otherwise lol)
Boss 1 - The Blooming Genesaur
Boss Overview: Some sort of Control Druid, probably.
Rewards (Class Challenge: Priest)
(Not really sure which version of Broken Mystic I prefer)
Boss 2 - Kataku
Boss Overview: He will be a Discard Warlock, featuring Devastated Lands from Wing 2.
Rewards (Class Challenge: Warlock)
Boss 3 - Imperator Mar'gok
Boss Overview: His deck will be a mix of Ogre minions and Arcane Mage spells.
Reward
Boss 4 - Akama the Sage (vs Lord Garithos)
Boss Overview: Garithos hates Akama a lot, since he helped Kael'thas in the original timeline. Thus, he will personally fight him. Garithos' deck will feature a lot of healing and Akama's will be good against it in some way. I dunno xD
The Corrupted Nest looks fun but not sure if Bearmantle's HP will make this fight too easy due to essentilly countering the boss one, I guess I'll have to wait to see both characters decks in order to find out. About the cards, I find Dark Eggs too polarising and RNG-dependant and while Cleanser is cool I'm not sure if demon tech is needed in your expansion. Still a good card, near vanilla statline silence. Dragons of Nightmares is good, nothing to say. Same about Phantom Menace, balance seems okay and it's a good removal. I like Nythendra and it must be fun to wreck it with an Enrage Warrior :P. About the cards, not sure why Onyxian Claws is rogue, it's always cool to have healadin support like champion of the dusk. About Ysera, you should make her deck full of expensive dragons because the HP only pays off if it's 4 mana or more. Verdant Drake is a good idea, I like your cards that give Dream cards. Ysera, on the other hand... It wrecks Zoo because if they have a full board they are screwed, and the card just costs 4. Honestly the effect is original but I don't like it, it could break the game by giving your opponent useless minions. And if you use her you'll most likely be prepared by the effect with Silence and such, while your opponent not.
@Wailor:
Podling Seedspreader is good, the effect pays off with just one Treant so the statline is justified. I prefer the second broken mystic just like @McF4rtson due to the first one being useless if hero is at full health (so near always useless if played on curve). Change the statline though, too low. Both infiltrator dagger and unbrafen soulharvester are good and original, plus I love 1/3 1 cost minions (yes, I've entered hearthstone after the Tunnel Trogg nightmare, so I don't have PTSD from them). Funnily enough, while you said in the last wing that you were going to make an Ogre magi with a Spell Damage based HP, I was thinking about making an Elemental with a similar effect as your Oger Archmagi's effect. Maybe I'll still do it, I'll see. The minion is good, a better version of Ogre Magi (though I guess that's intended), but old magi was tash anyway so it shouldn't matter. Boss HP is like Kalec's one but written different, maybe you want check that out or just leave it with your own writing. Ashtongue Spy is cool and Akama interesting to destroy small minions.
Ok, so I've remade Vanessa's HP to something more interesting:
I was thinking about the best bosses of Galakrond Awakening, and Khadgar vs. Avalanchan came to my mind. I love to replay that battle from time to time just to see in how many turns I can defeat the boss and which overpowered combo I can make. So, I wanted to make Vanessa similar. Enchantments can stack, including Hakkar's cost, and if one Hakkar's blood leaves your Hp cost will reduce.
Not sure if it's easy to understand, so I would like a bit of feedback. Also, I'm not sure about the warrior common, which one of those you prefer?
The first one is more 'Piratey' and more suited for aggro, while the second one is more for control. The second card is more original but mostly useless and I'm not sure if there's enough Pirate sinergy in this set (Grim Blacksmith is pirate but not aggro) so I'm not sure which card I should post.
So, today is the last submitting day, but no one has done it yet. Will we have extra time?
I've got the final version of all cards, bosses and hero powers, but I have to think about the decks and to put everything in submission format. I'll try to finish today, but I'm not all that sure I'll be able to.

I will submit today. One person has PM'ed me and said they probably won't be able to submit, but if any others need time, I'll add it.
Had a shift and got home at 9. I'll submit tonight and use tomorrow to get the voting thread done. That also gives a bit more time for others who need it.

Nice ideas so far. Quite busy, but some quick thoughts:
Which statline do you suggest? I was worried of giving it better stats because of Circle of Healing.
If 3 mana, 4/2. If 2 mana, 2/1. Injured Blademaster is 3 mana 4/7 with Circle, this is 4/6 with upside. Tol'vir is 2 mana 2/6 Taunt, again with COH.
Alright, some small reviews:
@Klipce

That's why she'll have a deck focused in customizing your hero power. The following cards are the ones her deck will be formed with:
Not sure if it's easy to understand, so I would like a bit of feedback. Also, I'm not sure about the warrior common, which one of those you prefer?
The first one is more 'Piratey' and more suited for aggro, while the second one is more for control. The second card is more original but mostly useless and I'm not sure if there's enough Pirate sinergy in this set (Grim Blacksmith is pirate but not aggro) so I'm not sure which card I should post.
Also, why isn't that post on hearthpwn news?

So, today is the last submitting day, but no one has done it yet. Will we have extra time?
I've got the final version of all cards, bosses and hero powers, but I have to think about the decks and to put everything in submission format. I'll try to finish today, but I'm not all that sure I'll be able to.
I will submit today. One person has PM'ed me and said they probably won't be able to submit, but if any others need time, I'll add it.
Okay, thanks. I'll send my submission tomorrow if that's okay.
No problem.
Had a shift and got home at 9. I'll submit tonight and use tomorrow to get the voting thread done. That also gives a bit more time for others who need it.
