A Day at the Races has the same name as an old movie. It's its only saving grace, as 1 Mana Discover spells are even less original than Giants.
I'm between Jade Eater and Magnetite Shard. Thoughts?
I like Jade Eater the most, but it seems OP. Maybe he can summon one Jade Idol and still be strong compared to Jade Spirit? Or maybe you can increase his cost by 1?
Alright. I will just post this card here and I will wait, until someone gives me the winner's profile border.
But in all seriousness, I will post my real cards a bit later and I will also comment on some people's cards, which I find interesting or easy to evaluate. Until this happens, I would like to ask the mods to give us some clarification on the keywords we can use.
So, as someone who wasn't around for vanilla and only started playing right before the Kara xpac came out, which of the keywords are considered vanilla and therefor not acceptable for this contest?
All keywords that appear in Basic and Classic (except Poisonous it seems), and the three class-exclusive mechanics do not count. This includes:
Battlecry
Deathrattle
Spell Damage
Taunt
Stealth
Divine Shield
Charge
Windfury
Enrage (RIP)
Freeze
Secret
Silence
Immune
Choose One
Combo
Overload
Counter
Note that you CAN you use these on your card. They just don't count towards the two mechanics your card needs to have to be eligible.
Keywords that DO count towards your two mechanics include:
So, as someone who wasn't around for vanilla and only started playing right before the Kara xpac came out, which of the keywords are considered vanilla and therefor not acceptable for this contest?
This is not an extensive list, but here's a basic rundown of the main Keywords and mechanics from each expansion Year:
Expansion Year #1 (Goblins vs Gnomes, Curse of Naxxramas, The Grand Tournament, Blackrock Mountain)
Spare Parts, Inspire, "Reveal a minion from each player's deck. If yours costs more, ..." (aka Joust) , "if you're holding a Dragon"
Year of the Kraken (Whisper of the Old Gods, The League of Explorers, Mean Streets of Gadgetzan, One Night in Karazhan)
C'Thun synergy, Discover, Jades, "if your deck has no duplicates"
Year of the Mammoth (Journey to Un'Goro, Knights of the Frozen Throne, Kobolds & Catacombs)
Year of the Raven (The Witchwood, The Boomsday Project, Rastakhan's Rumble)
Rush, Echo, Magnetic, Overkill
Do the following effects also count as expansion specific? - if your hand is empty; - shuffle; - deathrattle on your opponent's turn (KoFT), Discard the lowest cost card or stealth for 1 turn (RR), - if this minion survived after taking damage (KoFT) - each turn this is in your hand (WotoG) - worgen switcharoo (WW) - (d)evolve - hand buff (incl. if this has X or more attack) - omega effects - elemental synergy
I'm asking this, because keywords are normally 1-word bolded phrases, but seeing Link mention phrases like the C'thuun Buffing one or the jade one, I considered I could ask for other expansion specific effects.
Yeah, why not? I just checked and I don;t see any basic/classic cards with a shuffle effect. The very first time we see this phrase being used is in Malorne's card text (unless I'm forgetting something).
I'd go with Champion of Megafin. It has a very nice artwork and a fitting effect. It should just be a Murloc, though.
From my own experience, I don't think Midnight Terrorsaur would do well. I once participated with a card that altered another keyword and it obtained modest results.
@AngryChicken
I really, really like the idea behind Flower Garden, but Poisonous and Secretly are both from the Year of the Mammoth :/ Ghoulfriend is also cool.
@DestroyerR
I just wanted to say Self-Upgrading Bot is my favorite card so far.
@Zelpha
I think Nar'thalas Hermit is too weak. You could make it 3 Mana 2/2 or 4 Mana 3/3. Btw, what's the flavor supposed to be?
@GerVez0512
Both are neat, but I'd say Balzaphon is slightly more interesting and looks less broken. So, I'd go with him.
Anyways, I'm reposting my cards with a more balanced Jade Eater and the new Haunted Dinobot:
Those who've played WoW probably get the reference. We've all tried being ganked by someone, especially in Stranglethorn Vale (where Rastakhan's Rumble takes place), slowing down our questing and leveling. Ugh, that was so annoying. Found it quite fitting with Overkill. In addition, the effect is very niche, so I think it deserves vanilla stats.

It’s just that I wouldn’t even include “shuffle” as being a Keyword, because it’s such a basic concept of card games that it shouldn’t “belong” to any specific expansion. Could just be me though
I just wanted to say Self-Upgrading Bot is my favorite card so far.
Thanks! About your cards, Jade Eater has awesome flavor, although a little OP IMO. Haunted Dinobot is cool, but it looks just a bunch of random Keywords tied together by an all-including name (wow, that sounds stupid. What I mean is that rather than adding the effects to express the flavor, it sounds like you took a bunch of random effects and tried to force them into one flavor. Does that make sense? You know what, forget it). I definitely like Magnetite Shard most, it’s got a nice flavor and effect. Minor nitpick: shouldn’t have a period after Divine Shield

Like I said, my list was not extensive so there was definitely room for additional mechanics that I missed. I think your list is pretty good; there's a lot of room for potential in this theme.

Behold, foolish interlopers! I am commanding this mortal to spread the will of the Scourge throughout the interwebs, encouraging you to seek out me, Archlich Kel'Thuzad! Now coming to you as the tenth class of Hearthstone!
I am a finalist in this Class Creation Competition, so if you could give it a look I would be greatly appreciative <3
I think that's not correct. According to how rotations went, it should be:
Year #1: The Curse of Naxxramas, Goblins vs Gnomes.
Year #2: Blackrock Mountain, The Grand Tournament, League of Explorers.
Year of the Kraken: Whispers of the Old Gods, One Night at Karazhan, Mean Streets of Gadgetzan.
I think it's understandable to combine year #1 and #2, but in any case, LoE belongs to the same year as BRM and TGT.
I will be completely honest in-that I was going 100% off of my poor memory when I wrote that list. I left Hearthstone immediately after TGT and did not return until Un'Goro, so I'm a little fuzzy about the timeline during that period.

Amazing card. Minor nitpick is that a unique effect such as that should belong to a Legendary

Cheers Mate. I see your point with the unique effect. The reason I've made it common is simply because I don't find the effect game-changing, and I don't really think it deserves Legendary status.
As for your card, self-upgrading bot is very flavorful and a neat effect. Don't think you need to change anything.
We're looking for Keywords or mechanics, so that's why things like C'Thun, Jades, and "if you're holding a Dragon" are included. Like I said, my list was not extensive so there was definitely room for additional mechanics that I missed. I think your list is pretty good; there's a lot of room for potential in this theme.
After reading the rules for a second time, I see I have missed this information. Ok, my bad.
Well, I can't come up with anything interesting (or practical) for now, so I will just comment on some people's cards.
Shatterstar1998I like the raven the most, though I have to agree with DestroyerR, that the name sounds a bit weird. It is more suitable for a spell than for a minion, if you ask me. So I would advise you to change it and I would also cut the taunt keyword, as it seems out of place.
Wailor The warrior spell is very flavourful, but I doubt that anyone would put it in their decks. People never included I Know a Guy in the past, because they preferred to run other reliable cards than risk getting a bad RNG outcome. Not to mention, there weren't any good taunt minions in MSoG to justify its inclusion. When Stonehill Defender got released, this spell got completely forgotten. And I fear something similar would happen to your card as well. Rush decks are fast paced and they care more about tempo. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't want to run a spell to generate a minion and get slowed down. Players are better off running Dr. Boom, Mad Genius and Omega Assembly, as they get tons of value and synergistic cards from them. Imho you should redesign your card - make it a minion, call it a ??? racer, give it rush and this effect as a battlecry.
I'm not going to talk about how OP the Jade eater is in Jade Elemental (Shudderwock) shaman. The 4 mana 3/3 elemental is nice, but not that exciting as the warrior spell. The Dino is also ok, but still not outstanding.
Lathy Love the flavour of your minion, though I'm not really convinced that this should have vanilla stats. I know that the effect is a niche one, but this looks like a power-creeped Pit Fighter and I'm not ok with it. Anyway, I think this minion shouldn't be a legendary as another user above me suggested. Maybe an epic, but definitely not a Legendary, because it is too weak and as a such and will only make people mad, if they open it from their packs. Also, there are many gankers in Stranglethorn, who terrorise low-level players.
AngryChicken I love your Ghoulfriend cards; I hope you find a suitable art for all those 3 versions, because you have great chances to win the next competition. I also love the Garden spell (although it needs another effect from a different Hearthstone Year as you already know). Tell me, how do you always come up with ideas like these? They are amazing.
DestroyerR Cool and a well-designed card. Nothing else to say.
teknicianI like your first card the most, because the other ones are a bit weak. I'm not saying it as a bad thing, the card is still nice in terms of flavour.
OttawaCloset Interesting idea, but make it either a Warrior or a Hunter one. I'm not really sure if it should cost 2 or it would be too powerful for that price.
Demonxz95 Dunno, mate, I like your first card more. The Dinosaur looks really weak and underwhelming. I respect your effort to make the second copy of it useful, but a 4 mana 4/4 beast with "Battlecry: Adapt" doesn't sound like something I would put in my deck. Paladin got many defensive tools from RR, so that the Rush and Lifesteal adaptations wouldn't improve this deck as much as they do.
Lathy Love the flavour, though I'm not really convinced that this should have vanilla stats. Cheers Mate. I might up the rarity to rare/epic as suggested. I can understand your thought of it being a Power Creep of Pit Fighter, but it's a card that would never see play in constructed, making it only useable in arena. Stranglethorn Ganker should be just the same in arena. I know they're class cards, but Ethereal Peddler and Drakonid Operative (and Usher of Souls for that matter) have a way more powerful effect than this card.
I think the most pronounced example are found in the 3-mana 3/4 category. The "initial" one being Spider Tank. Yes, it has the Mech-tag, but if we count that as a solely beneficial tag, Nightmare Amalgam is a strict power creep of that. I'd argue that Blackwald Pixie, Augmented Elekk, Untamed Beastmaster etc, are power creeps of Spider Tank, even though I know they're not, as they serve a different purpose. That might be a slight counter-argument to my point, but it really comes to show that Pit Fighter honestly didn't serve no purpose whatsoever, and would never see play in a constructed game ever, which is why I think the 5/6 vanilla stats on Stranglethorn Ganker is justified.
I like Jade Eater the most, but it seems OP. Maybe he can summon one Jade Idol and still be strong compared to Jade Spirit? Or maybe you can increase his cost by 1?

Congratulations on your future win, it's well deserved!
Not the biggest fan of Jade Eater, mainly because I think jades are a bit bland.
Haunted Dinobot has potential, but I do prefer Magnetit Shard. It has great flavour, and seems to be playable unlike that Silvermoon guy.

Balzaphon is the better one. Highlander decks are control deck, so the first effect make more sense.
A Day at the Race is kind of boring. It doesn't scream a unique mechanic.
Magnetite Shard is my favorite. Powerful, simple and flavorful.

Jade Architect seems an OP tool to an already strong mechanic. No thanks.
Blood Lord Volrath doesn’t seem very unique to this theme, since Lifesteal is already widely used in WW.
Murder of Raven looks neat, but that name is really weird. I’d change it to “Raven Apparition” or something, and find a more... “ghostly” art
So... where's the submission topic?
