I remember past contests where there were around 10 pages of disscusion and submissions. Recently we had 2 competiotions at (aprox.) the same time and there were extremly few people. The last one (200th contest) was supposed to be a collaboration between hearthpwn and /r/customhearthstone. That means 2 comunities of creative people in a giant contest. There are only 2 pages if submissions right now. What happened? Where is everybody? Did people skip this one because of it's complexity? The last one with mech support cards also had relativly few contestants (only 4 pages of submissions). Am i missing something?
I've noticed a decline in quantity, and to a slight extent, quality of custom cards this year. Why, I am not entirely sure. I've also noticed custom card creators have somewhat of a... reputation, with some people who don't like custom cards. It might be the fact that the number of those sorts of people might be growing, it might not.
I, myself, usually give larger competitions like this one a shot but I think a mix of lack of inspiration/motivation/drive made me not enter. I don't think it was too complex.
The game is dying, bro. MtG Arena is the new king. :D :D :D
It's a meme yes, but the latest VS report only half as much data as they did last year at this exact time. 110,000k players last year to 55,000k this year. People are leaving this game. With Artifact on the horizon, even the most dedicated of the community will be tested. I know I am leaving for whatever Hearthpwn equivalent artifact gets and I will be spending all of my time there. Only occasionally peeking in on HS.

Very constructive post idd. Not the first time either ... feel free to be hyped about MtG Arena, but express that enthusiasm in threads that r relevant for that, thanks.
Anyway, i kinda stopped contributing to WCDC on regular basis for one simple reason, im too damn lazy. Im not exactly sure why specifically we have had a decline of interest in WCDC, but my guess would be that a lot of ppl feel burned out, or that there r not many new things to come up with anymore. After all, HS has been around for a while and the comp is running for a bigger part of that.
That being said, there r still things to discover and designs to create and at least few creative ppl do show us that every week still. So im very happy that the comp is still running, even tho with fewer participants than it used to. I still enjoy seeing the submissions and ideas ppl come up with.

With all respect, Sinti, just because my post was short, doesn't mean it's not a constructive one. It's the truth, the game is dying and I don't need to repeat like a parrot why that is happing, several users already stated the reasons in this forum. And sorry, but yes, MtG Arena is the new king, wheter you like it or not.

Pretty sure you realize what i meant and what tone your post had, i dont want to discuss this in here anymore and derail the thread even more. I just wanted to say, be more relevant to the thread's topic with your posts, dont just shout general statements out there, they r seen as spamming more often then not.

Agreed. And I'll add that Mtga can be king when they have a bigger playerbase and better custom design competitions, and I'm not saying that won't happen, but cmon, isn't that jumping the gun...
Now to the topic: it's sad because I literally just got involved after only browsing the competitions for 2 years. The mech support was my first and the collaboration is my second competition, and it doesn't feel like a very vibrant environment so far.
Hearthstone is turning off its fanbase. Bad business decisions in terms of high-cost preorders and bundles with ridiculously low drop rates for legendaries, and lots of legendaries being printed.
Hearthstone's business model is toxic to its playerbase.
And the original team has all left essentially and we're left in the hands of less well known developers to present a public face for Hearthstone. People are moving on because a) there are new opportunities available and b) they don't trust the direction the game is going in.
I don't like that idea but that's what I'm seeing. As for custom cards, I'm not sure. Maybe people get fatigued by all the WCDC posts. I for one would be happier if the polls and submission and discussion threads got neatly archived after a little while in some other forum so they wouldn't clog up the first page, as it is there are like a bajillion pinned threads.
but you're right, teknician, that's pretty much it. The game is slowly becoming pretty much PTW, the original team has left, Brode"s laugh has left for a second dinner, and it feels as if the game has just only started getting cool.
So basically everyone is just getting hungry for more.

The best way to actually do something well is have no idea what you're doing. Then what you're doing will become what you have no idea you're doing, at which point since you're doing what you're doing without knowing what you're doing you're doing what you're doing without knowing you're doing it.

*shrugs* I pop in and out from time to time.
Hi i'm Tyler and I play hearthstone and watch anime.
Sometimes i make cards. I'd like to do that for a career one day if ever possible.

I could be wrong, but I feel like its more because of Hearthpwn's popularity. Card design seems to be going pretty good at Reddit.
I exist, I think.
