It's time to bring back Design Duels. For those who have not seen any of the previous threads, these Design Duels are always a 1v1 design competition between two anonymous players. The two competitors don't even know each other. For those who like to compete in one of these, simply send me a PM and I will set you up for a match. Lately I have been trying to do 2 duels at the same time, one New Comer Design Duel (for those who have not done a design duel before) and a Veteran Design Duel. Anyone entering duels for the first time is automatically a New Comer, but once you've completed your first New Comer match you're bumped into veteran status. If you are interested in joining a duel, just send me a PM and I will add you to the queue. Now for New Comer Design Duel #7:
Prompt: Design a card that alters your heroes Health total
Tbh, I'm a little disappointed in both entries. If the theme was just setting your hero's health to something, I think I would have liked to have seen more along the lines of Alexstrasza or maybe Tree of Life if that could count. It's just that we see hero-replacement fan creations all the time, and I think the theme here could have been more uniquely and creatively tackled in other ways.
That said, I kinda wanna go with the Brutish Rager just because it's both simpler and funnier. I don't think either is otherwise superior to the other thematically or mechanically.
I don't like how weak Maiev is. For comparison's sake, Jaraxxus can attack for 3, then spam a 6/6 the following turn. Although Rogue has way better burst, the fact that you have a 2 attack weapon in the late game is worthless, and even with the effect you will almost never get the immune buff until 2 turns after, which basically means death to any Rogue because the simple act of playing Maiev just wasted a turn and Rogue has to depend on neutral cards for heals. The Wardens were made uneccesarily powerful, and its totally hindering the real strength Maiev couldve had. If it just had Battlecry: silence a minion and a 5/5 body I feel like it would've been way better. Maybe in a Reno deck, but at the same time for Rogue that would be the equivalent of playing Ice Block, so using this card means you'd need to be playing aggro, which this card looks the complete opposite of...
Ragelord is also bothering me... It seems way too easy to get 20 health and spam a bunch of 5 attack ragers. Even as a mage although you used a turn if you decide to ping it, they don't really have to worry because they'd probably play Ice Block or Barrier beforehand. For any other classes its also easy to save yourself with this minion, although im glad this minion doesn't have Taunt. At the same time you can drop this as soon as you go below 20 health or even a little over because the consequences of turning into the Rager on curve is extremely minimal. Also this card seems to fit some classes better than others, (Like what Pally is gonna play this? Midrange Shaman will not give up their tempo and totem synergy that easily either...) at least Majordoomo was equally bad for all classes...
In the end I think i'm gonna have to vote Maiev, its weak but the potential is there. Ragelord just looks broken to me.
I don't really get either of these Hero replacements. Salty is goofy, but insanely powerful for just reducing your health by 10. Here, have 2 5 Attack minions every turn! Go ahead and evolve them or just rush your opponent until they are out of effiecnet trades and removal.
And Maiev... what is this synergy? Target can't attack (OP!) then silence it so you can hit it with your face... why? Why would you want that? Just use your super strong 4/4 instead of this crappy, gimmicky weapon.
In short, Salty is too simple and Maiev is way too complicated. Both are OP, with Salty being more so. Of the two I'd rather run Salty in a deck, so I'm picking him.
I'm not sure if i can vote for either, because i don't like either one. Maiev just seems way too weak and Brutish Rager bothers me because it's hero power can spawn even more Brutish Ragers, if it was a card then it would be a collectible rager too so... yeah it's just really fucked up that it basically has a chance to summon mini Reno that gets you to 20 health right away. I'm just voting for Maiev, because to me it just seems like Brutish Rager has a design flaw.
I like Saltos better (as was said before, the other choice seems too gimmicky and a little OP)... But I find some concern with the fact that it has 1 HP and costs so much. Shaman could [card]Earth Shock[card] that poor rager and transform the player into a rager instead... I get the point of it but I think it might actually be a little underpowered. I'd at least ramp it up to 2 health to avoid the earth shock nonsense.
Eh... I'm going to agree with most of this thread. Maiev is too complicated and Saltos is probably too powerful.
While Jarraxus creates just as many new tokens as this Maiv, they're purposefully simple. By the time Jaraxus is played, it's a last minute hail mary play. And it often backfires. If hero replace is going to work, it's got to stay simple. Trying to suddenly rely on new combo conditions seems like a bad idea.
Saltos should probably just have lower hp, both for balance and for flavor, given that he's lord of the ragers. I'd kind of like to see him have 1 HP, like other ragers... but that'd pretty much eliminate his usefulness outside of anything except maybe (and it's a big maybe), some new kind of Freeze Mage. Also, given the fact that we'll probably see new Ragers in future expansions, his hero power could become too much of a restraint on future design space. He should probably just generate his own unique Salty Ragers or something.
My vote goes to Saltos. It's not perfect, but a second or third iteration could be good. With Maiev it's just simply back to the drawing board, I don't see any means of fixing it. It is a "newcomer" design duel after all, no shame to either contestant. We're all learning here.
Huh, Maiev won? I'd have liked to heard from the people who voted for it, considering everyone in the thread was hating on it. Maybe just the star power of a popular WC3 character?
Still, congrats to the winner. You should both consider making second versions and posting them in the forums sometime.

Isn't it the rule that when you replace your Hero with another, your Health total is the minion's max Health? :S
How does Salty Lord go from 1 to 20?
I think I'm gonna vote Maiev, more consistent; even though Wardens are insanely powerful imo.
You can't stop the signal.
