It's time to bring back Design Duels. For those who have not seen any of the previous threads, these Design Duels are always a 1v1 design competition between two anonymous players. The two competitors don't even know each other. For those who like to compete in one of these, simply send me a PM and I will set you up for a match. Lately I have been trying to do 2 duels at the same time, one New Comer Design Duel (for those who have not done a design duel before) and a Veteran Design Duel. Anyone entering duels for the first time is automatically a New Comer, but once you've completed your first New Comer match you're bumped into veteran status. If you are interested in joining a duel, just send me a PM and I will add you to the queue.
Today's match is a special Winterveil themed one all about the joy of giving. So, without further ado, here is Veteran Design Duel #3:
Alright, you ready for your next match?
Prompt: Design a card that puts something into your opponents hand
This is a tough one for me. While I do appreciate the more christmas-y feel of entry #1, Mechanical Greench, I dislike that it has over 4 lines of text. The effect could potentially be very good or very bad for you: for example, a Mage could do 14 damage with 2x Fireball instead of 13 damage with 2x Fireball + ping for the same cost (minor damage difference, but still), or it could royally screw up a Gadgetzan Auctioneer turn...so the card is probably balanced okay. I really dislike that Blizzard made Curse of Rafaam's text the way they did, it would be better as a tooltip - I understand people not familiar with all cards have to have this sort of thing, but the explanation takes far too much space and limits the card creation process of similar cards T_T
Dwarven Explorer Discovers a card for your opponent, and while there are some cards that you could give your opponent to "help" him out, you'll probably end up giving him a decent card. Therefore, the statline of 2/3 seems too weak to me (for example, a bad scenario; you play this card turn 2, Discover a Frostbolt, Darkbomb and a Quick Shot - giving your opponent card advantage and a sure way to remove your minion. I'm probably not seeing all the options this card opens up, and this card would be used in some sort of mill decks or something but I feel the downside warranted a bit higher stats).
I agree with AUzg. Mechanical Greench one has the right theme, but it suffers from trying to do too much at once. If it just gave your opponent a card that increased your Spell Damage OR increased spell cost, it would be great.
Dwarven Explorer is an interesting idea, but the only possible reason you'd play it is in a mill deck. If it had better stats it could be strong in a zoo or rush deck.
I'll wait for other comments before I make my decision.
The first entry is interesting, but that much wordiness has always been a big turn-off for me when it comes to cards. It does hit the theme better, but I wish if they were going to make that card text so long anyway that they had just gone ahead and made it Winter Veil rather than Christmas to keep it in-lore.
I almost didn't get Dwarven Explorer, but then I remembered that when you Discover something you always get it. So I'm almost certain what it means is that you and your opponent both get a copy of the card you Discover. That's not immediately intuitive, especially because it says "it" and not "a copy of it", but it makes more sense then the alternative, which I could only assume might be even close to good in some sort of hyper-efficient mill deck, and probably even not then.
This is actually tough. They both have significant downsides, the first its wordiness and the second its lack of immediate clarity, but they're both also quite interesting if you get past those specific flaws. Adhering more to the Winter Veil theme might lead me more towards the first entry if they'd actually said Winter Veil rather than Christmas, but I'm not sure... hmm...

Is it supposed to give the card to you too, though? I read it as Discover a card (get it in hand), then give it to your opponent...because it doesn't say "a copy of it", if it did, I'd think it gave them to both players...
I could have added in Mulch, but the idea was to put a card into only your opponents hand, One of the contestants had asked if their design could put cards into both players hands and I said "no," it has to go into your opponents hand only (and not via draw). Arguably Sap could have worked too, but I wanted the designs for this match to be more unique overall.

Ah, well then there goes my theory on the second one putting the Discovered card in both your and your opponent's hand. =P

Welp, now I really have no idea which way to vote. If both players got the card, I would definitely have voted for Dwarven Explorer. Right now, I just don't see a use for it, even in mill decks it's pretty bad.
Most of what needs to said has already been said, but I think the Mechanical Greench could (and should) have simply been worded 'Battlecry: Give your opponent a 'Christmas Spirit' card'. Look at cards like Elite Tauren Chieftain or White Eyes, they don't specify what the token is, and that saves space on the card. If it had been worded like that, I would probably have voted for it. For me, more than 4 lines of text has almost always been instant disqualification.

It's worded with Curse of Rafaam in mind, as it should be. They made the wording of the curse stupidly long so what can you do.

Well, in my personal opinion, whoever made the card could have looked at it and thought 'this looks ugly, maybe I'll just deviate from the standard wording a bit.' I'm not saying we shouldn't look at the currently existing cards when thinking about how to word ours, but when the wording is stupidly long and probably unnecessary (since you'll be including the token anyways), exceptions can - and should, at least in my opinion - be made.
Of course, I can see why they worded it like that. I just think it looks unpleasant.

Yeah, it does look ugly, but then there's the issue that some will not vote for the card, solely because it deviates from the wording convention. It's not possible to please everyone with the wording so yeah (which is why i try to ignore wording when i vote for things, it's often a really subjective thing how the wording should be done).
I voted for entry 2. It's simple and sleek. While it might appear useless, or even bad, it's the exact kind of card I'd want to ponder and think over until I found a way to make it useful. I love trying to find ways to make a bad card into a good card. Who knows, maybe it would find some niche in the Wild Format someday.
It'd make a good troll card. And it's so simple, I kind of wonder why it isn't already a card.
Beyond that, there is a need for "bad cards". If there were only good cards, then Discover would be way too good. You need to get trash results from the various Portal cards or Evolve or Mulch or w/e from time to time.
Mechanical Greench just has way to much going on. Bad wording and a out-of-universe reference to Christmas (not even the feast of Winterveil?). I also kind of hate holidays (can't wait for this winterveil crap to end), so maybe I'm a bit biased.
Today in my free brawl pack I got Barongeddon, then I had a cup of fresh green tea. As a result of that, I think Priest is OP because my keyboard is not a mechanical one. I hope Blizzard will address this issue.
I did not expect this! I thought since so many people were confused with my card that I would lose. I actually like the mechanical greench. Even though the card text is super long, its effect is really cool!

tl;dr: still on the fence who to give my vote

I'm surprised the examples of Mulch, Sap, Freezing Trap, and Vanish weren't given. I think they might have prompted more variety in thinking than just Curse of Rafaam. And that's without getting into cards that just outright have your opponent draw cards like Naturalize, Coldlight Oracle, Grove Tender, and Dancing Swords, though that might not be what you were going for.

I voted for #1 after all, despite the longer text this time...#2 is slightly off for me..

What I was also surprised about was that the cost of both of our cards and the stats were exactly the same.
A tough match once again. Congrats Dranight
