It's time to bring back Design Duels. For those who have not seen any of the previous threads, these Design Duels are always a 1v1 design competition between two anonymous players. The two competitors don't even know each other. For those who like to compete in one of these, simply send me a PM and I will set you up for a match. I'm going to try something new here and have 2 separate duels go on, one for new players and one for veterans (IE anyone who's done one of these already). I'll do it this week, and if I get enough PMs of people interested I will continue having 2 duels (one new comer one veteran) every week until the next tournament (some time after Christmas). So, without further ado, here is Veteran Design Duel #1;
Prompt: Design two cards that add to your opponents deck.
A first question, what´s the difference between the Veteran and Newcomer ones?
And for the vote, this was a close call, and a hard one to decide, the 1st chooses automaticly made me doubt and made me think about my vote on the last ones, both are incredibely good and all other things, but I like more by balance Shadow-Sage Iskar, but I also liked the Nora Dragon, not sure about the 1st ones, they are too matched and good between them (No, but I am comparing both of em)
About the 2nd ones (I am by 1 of him and 1 of the another one if you ask), I like more the Poison, I didn´t really much liked Fifth Legend, because it can get so wrong... that I in particular I don´t really like it, but the poison acts pretty interesting, could work in a Midrange or Mill, but can see play.
My vote goes to the Entry #2, a close call, pretty discussed for me.
A first question, what´s the difference between the Veteran and Newcomer ones?
I try to let new players get in first for the design duels, and when I decided to start them back up I got messages from players who competed in the first 10 and/or the tournament. Since I usually let first-timers take priority (so they can what these duels are like), I felt that was unfair for those who've competed before and now have to wait. A simple solution was to split them into two separate groups. So now we have the veteran design duels which are for players who have done these before, and the new-comer which is for brand new competitors. This way wait times are shorter and I can get an idea of how many people are interested to compete more than once.
I'm not at all convinced of the balance of Entry 1's cards, but I think tweaking their stat lines is a pretty easy fix, and they're solid thematically and conceptually otherwise. Entry 2, though, has one entry that deals in hand destruction and another that deals in draw denial; I can't say that I'm a fan of either of those mechanics, and they're also not nearly as easy to fix. My vote is going to Entry 1.
An additional note for everyone that I will add in subsequent Design Duels - Anyone and everyone is welcome to enter, this includes the veterans (I have a separate match for both). If you are interested, just send me a PM and you will be entered in the queue. The only time you cannot enter the queue is if you are already in it (New comers needs to wait until they win/lose before entering the veteran queue). That being said, as soon as your match is finished and the results are up you may enter the queue again (I will make sure you do not face the same opponent).
Amazing insight. Extremely well put and detailed. Told your opinion in a well explained way that would make anyone jealous of your masterful skills as a critic. Good job!
If the designers don't understand why the cards are terrible, that's on them, not me.
Don't have much time, so I'll just be quick. I don't particularly like either, but:
I'm voting for 1. The cards are a bit on the strong side (Nora Dragon strikes me as being wayyy too powerful), but I like them more as a concept than the other ones, and the cards look aesthetically nicer. I particularly dislike the Mind-Numbing Potion. A deck attack which makes your opponent's draws COMPLETELY USELESS is pretty annoying regardless of balance, it's got a typo in the title (N isn't capitalised), and there's 5 lines of text.
I'm voting for Entry one because Fifth Legend is just an awesome card, however it should probably be a 5-5 or less for the same reason prince malchezaar is bad- turns out a random legendary minion isn't always a good thing. What if you deny a druid their draw and give them patches the pirate? Insanely good. Nora Dragon is interesting because it tests the idea that if you give a class a card it has no deck or synergy with, but it is bonkers overpowered, can it create an archetype? That is very interesting to me.
As a side note, Although Entry 1 has balance issues, I think that is a relatively insignificant thing to judge.
The sage just doesn't really seem to fill a good purpose in my opinion- it is either a no fun ago card that is twice as frustrating as divine favor, a card I'm not a huge fan of to begin with, and although it has combo potential it would be very difficult to pull off even in friendly battles. The poison is cool but it shares a similar problem of just not being fun.
I think of it as picturing the win condition of both entries. Fifth legend gives a huge tempo swing (too huge imo but that can be fixed) and can either lead to the opponent getting baron gotten for the backfire or a mill house manastorm leading to a stomping when you needed aoe. This is good ring as well since it can be played around. On the other hand, imagine getting poisoned and needing a card and just being forced to not draw for a small investment of mana by the opponent.
Took a conscious risk by making my cards deal with hand disruption which Hearthstone generally doesn't do, the only card i can think of doing that is Dirty Rat.

The joke is you.

Both of them are terrible, but at least Entry 1 has one decent entry.

The match is getting close to finishing up. Feel free to continue commenting more on the cards and tell why you think they're good/bad.

Why Rogue is my favourite class:
My submission for this week's card design competition.

*waits patiently*
Unlike everybody else, I can at least see which entry won, but I still don't know who the entries belong to, lol.
Congratulations ZeroAndKira!
