Alright, before we get into this I want to make a disclaimer.
I know that this is an idea that has been done for, I know where this idea originated, I play the stupid thing, that's where I got the idea for this.
So my idea for a new format, Archmage, a more control-based game mode, where the core mechanics of the game are not lost, there are just some changes in how deckbuilding would work.
So first, the basics:
Any person wanting to make an Archmage deck must have the class they want to make the deck for over level 30.
All decks will inevitibly fall under the 'Reno' archetype as there are no copies allowed in the deck
Mode will be in Wild Format giving access to more cards and making it so it is possible to make a good Archmage deck in all classes
Deck sizes and health pools will be doubled while hand size and mana crystal capicity will be increased by 50%
For those of you who don't feel like doing math, that's 60 cards, 60 health, 15 cards in a hand, and 15 mana crystals
For those of you wondering why all of this looks a little familiar, first I would like to say hello to all my fellow MTG players, second I would like to point out to all of you, yes this does sound like MTG's Commander format(or for those really old school, EDH).
Now to give you some example decks for this, I'm going to post some decklists(one for each class) I have created for the new game mode...which I can't save because Hearthpwn decided to be a little bit stupid(like, why can't I save a deck over 30 cards, I'm going to label it 'Theorycraft' with a link back to this thread ffs, just let me have something nice). Note: These links open to an editible decklist because it was legit too much work to actually find a way to make these decklists easy to look at.
Archmage Mage (I swear named the mode before making the decks)
And now to address the potential problems that come are already prevalent in this mode:
Yes, I know Reno and Dr.7 are auto-includes, that was intended since the mode is designed to be a bit more control based
Yes, I understand that some classes are currently at a disadvantage, but currently that's also a problem with Wild, Standard, and Arena, so I see no difference here, but just like those, that might change in the future.
So please critique at your leisure, and for anyone who knows a better way to post these decklists, please let me know, I could use the help(seriously, these lists are ugly to look at).
I love you. I want this kind of ideas to be implemented in the game and keep in fresh every season (of the year). It should have a different name though, more neutral. Like Highlord
All the cards in the game are balanced with the usual game mode, that's why you have broken cards in Tavern Brawl and in this mode aswell. Imagine cards like Reno Jackson, Alexstrasza would have to change completely also many cards would be much worse like Leper Gnome or Hunter Hero Power.
You forgot to mention double the game time... no one is gonna want to play a mode where you have to fight someone with 60 health and Reno when their opponent can bm every turn. There's a reason its 30 health :/
So...MTG (which by the way, their 100-card Commander format is what this new mode was based on) has cards that are absolutely broken in Commander that are balanced in their Standard formats and the other way around.
Look, I would say we could try and do a ban-list, but then you realize how hard that would be in this game, in cardboard card games it's easy because you can just say, 'see this card, this card can't be used in decks and there is no way around it in competitive play as judges will want to see your decklists in any sanctioned tourney,' in Hearthstone that's a lot more difficult, especially in online play since people could probably hack the game to get around any protocols used to make banlists.
Look, it isn't perfect, but the regular formats aren't perfect either, and this is a game mode that not everyone has to play, no one forces you to play those Brawls where certain cards a broken, but if you want that free pack, you do so anyways.
Also, this is designed to be a more control-based game mode(because them aggro decks can get really annoying), so cards like Reno and Alex being a little more powerful is a reasonable assumption. And just going to point out by the way, if you see the lists for some of the more aggressive classes(like Hunter), you'll see than Finley is part of the deck, meaning that you might change your hero power at some point to make a 'bad' class, better overall.
love everything except for the name, I hope they make this soon
Yea...the name needs some work, there's already been a suggestion to change it to Highlord, but I'm going let Blizzard figure that out because they might have a name that is not either of the suggestions on here.
I love commander in MTG and have been trying to look into cool ways this could be implemented in Hearthstone. I would love Blizzard to test the waters with something like this and have something of a casual way to play this and it would give long time players a new way to play which is always nice.
Commander without the actual COMMANDER creature just doesn't sound fun to me. Maybe if you had a legendary you could use like a normal commander? But still even then, Reno and ALEXTRAZA would be overpowered and the game mode would never end. Decks like priest with tons of heals or rogue that can bounce Reno a million times would always win.
the biggest problem i see is alexstrasza and 15 mana. almost every game i feel would devolve into "stay alive, draw hard, and hope you get your otk before your opponent"

"since people could probably the game to get around any protocols used to make banlists."
I understand hearthstone has a reasonably sized kid audience, but seriously use some common sense. If there was any way to get around card limitations then people would have already done it! You must realize the game is set so you cannot put more than 2 of the same card in a deck, all it would take for the developers to change it is by typing in a 1 instead. Also your belief that it's harder to cheat in real life is dead wrong. Even in sanctioned events people put extra copies of cards in their decks in order to increase the chances of them drawing it. The judges can't go through several hundred decks, but a computer can analyse and double check that in a matter of seconds.

THey could simply ban certain cards that would make the mode broken
I like this as a Tavern Brawl and it's certainly a idea they have thought about, i think the biggest problems would be the duration of the matches and the fact that it's gonna be hard for new players to create 60 cards decks.
What's the reason to not allow multiple copies of the same card?
I think there could be other modifications in the rules, maybe start with a full hand and 10 mana, so the game is faster and also because the first turns would be boring since any form of aggro deck as we know now is basically dead you wouldn't see 1 drops or 2 drops.
Yes it could became a new game mode as any other Tavern Brawl could so i think we should focus on the Tavern Brawl idea first.

You can ban certain cards, I don't honestly think that cards like Reno would be all that powerful in a format that has you start at such a massive life total. Kazakas on the other hand would probably be nuts.

Archmage Mage (I swear named the mode before making the decks)
Archmage C'Thun Warrior
Archmage C'thun+N'Zoth Priest
Archmage C'thun Druid
Archmage Dragon Paladin
Archmage N'Zoth Hunter
Archmage GraveRobber Rogue
Archmage Maly-Saron Shaman
Archmage Reno-Lock

I like it. I think Hearthstone should branch out with more modes like this.
This is a stupid idea. Double the health pool in a format where every deck has Reno? That's just not well thought out.

I don't BM, so I didn't even know there was a time limit to games...or are we talking about turn time limit?
If we're talking turn time limit, then people need to learn not to BM every turn.
If there's a game time limit I didn't know about, then yea, double that too.

Shatter finally has its place if mage can run 60 cards... interesting...
Also, it's like Reno Jackson vs Alexstrasza

I like everything about this idea except for being only reno decks.
