To be as good as in the described scenario, it needs a ridiculous setup:"
I agree, in the situation the other guy mentioned you need to have two cards for the Doomsayer combo (say Frost Nova and the Doomsayer) along with Dragon's Breath in your hand, then you need the Doomsayer to actually go off and kill at least five minions for Breath to become free, then you also need to have Alex or have already worked their health down as just throwing 4-8 damage at their face usually isn't a good play. You also often have to use Doomsayer on turns before eight. Freeze is a pretty refined list without a ton of flexibility to change cards, I don't see there being room for this card in it.
Even though this card may not be that good, I kind of hope the animation for the card matches the art for it. Man would it be cool to kill an opponent with a flaming dragon. That's classy BM.
Obviously meant to be used with mass removal like Flamestrike. You wipe the board and cast this basically next to nothing. Good for offensive mages who want to flood the board.
In a meta where mages are starting to cut either frostbolt or fireball, this card looks pretty terrible. I don't think it will make burst viable and I don't think it will fit the freeze archetype. Maybe in some minionish deck... But generally mages can not afford to run discountable but semi-efficient cards because as a class they have no means of drawing cards without loosing tempo and the risk of ending with a not discounted card is too high as most of their class-cards are expensive and awkward to combo. Ir might end up a part of a very refined, combo oriented minion deck, especially if there's going to be more cards like nerubian egg which you yourself want to kill-off, but other than that it's just bad value on average.
In arena this is average. There are better picks, but often it will be paired with something useless and this card in arena on average will be deal 4 damage for 3 mana, so an upgraded shadow bolt/flame cannon.
well the problem is if your trading in your board to play the card what are you going to do with it? hitting face would be worse than going face with the minions, i guess you could clear things with it but its not really efficient, if you traded 3+ minions to play it there probably isnt anything else to hit with it. i guess it could be a 1 of in a deck that was really burn heavy and needed more damage somewhere
If you manage to Frost Nova + Doomsayer against a decent board, this card could be free on your next turn.
And if he managed to silence or destroy the doomsayer otherwise, this card is still pretty dead.
Sorry, but if a freeze mage manage to destroy a decent board with nova+doomsayer, then he already won, with or without this card. It simply require too much setup compared to other mage spells. To be viable as a class card it would require to you to destroy 2 minions. Mages get always on their spells a +1 damage bonus compared to other classes, so to be a decent mage spell you need to destroy 3 minions, and then it is still only a targeted flame cannon. And what in the end should it replace in freeze mage; Ice Lance?
Personally i'm not a big fan of this card; too much requirements to be viable, especially for the class that already has not really a place for more spells in their deck anymore.
Hard to evaluate this card. Face value says "not good", but I can see the potential. Giants mage might like it... feels like it fits in a control style where you generally have quite a full hand, good aoe and lots of options. Then you can pick your time to flamestrike his dr. boom and pay 2 or less to finish the boom with this.
People are missing the fact that you can still play it for 2-3 mana quite a lot of the time in normal board states. You don't need the wombo combo for it to be decent, at least Shadow Bolt level. Will every Mage deck run it? Hell no. But there's a certain type of mage that would love the extra board control spell alongside Frostbolt and Fireball.
As already stated, it would work well with mass removal like Flamestrike. Other than that, it just seems like a boring card.
That's another issue. It _is_ a boring card. With only 31 cards in the whole "set", you'd think they'd make something more interesting. 5 minutes in the card creation forum on here turns up 10 far better ideas for cards than this. Feels like a waste.
Seems unlikely to get value out of this. Hard to imagine a lot of situations where this is better than a frostbolt and easy to imagine a lot of situations where a frostbolt is clearly better. Tech cards should have way more value to compensate for being dead in your hand otherwise.
Might have play with some gimmicky KT/Malygos/Doomsayer plays but I'm not impressed.
I think the problem these new cards are going to have is that the cards from GVG and Naxx are more efficient. Why change the play style if you don't have to?
Another boring card...wow is this even the same team that delivered Naxx??? Does mage really need another direct damage spell?!?!?!?
The only thing I can think of is Blizz is trying to give mage a heavy direct damage deck...You stuff minions like Azure Drake, Bloodmage, Coldlight Oracle, Flamewaker, Gnomish Experimenter, Jeeves, Kobold Genmancer, Mini-mage(lol), Ogre Magi that give you cards and + spell damage.

The card on its own is terrible. Under the right circumstances it could be a good card.
Only good part is that it can wipe a surviving minion for free after flamestrike if 5 minions died, but that's too situational.

Time will tell.

Why didn't they make it gain one damage for each creature dying that turn? That would have been more fun!
First Flame Leviathan, now this. The Devs hate Mages DansGame (except for Blastmage)

Strange.
Should've been 5 damage.
