I had this cute idea earlier to try a deck with Kael'thas Sunstrider and Sorcerer's Apprentice, being that if you could land a turn late in the game with an Evocation and both of these cards on board, you could essentially play out 0 cost spells, your third one costs (1) and the apprentice would then discount it to zero. Seemed fun.
However... it did not work that way. In the end, my third spell still cost (1) and even my other (0) cost spells went up to (1)!
I understand that cards with text indicating something like this will overwrite other effects, such as the Skull of Gul'dan discount and outcast Eye Beam costs 1 interaction. But why would an aura effect not still take effect?
So, I'm just wondering if anyone could explain why it happened this way.
To be honest, I wish I had payed closer attention on the turn I played them. I recall I was sitting on KT and drew the Apprentice, so I got excited and quickly played them both, but I think it was KT first.
I guess I should experiment a bit more and see if the play order changes anything.
It's like setting the 1/6 taunt with +2 attack when at full health minion's attack to 1, it's a static effect that overrules anything.
Same with naga sea witch and other cards, unless it's a battlecry, the set a cost to a certain number will always take effect over anything else since it keep applying it every second over and over.
While skull of gul'dan just decreased the cost and eye beam sets the original cost to 1 but it doesn't re-apply it.
All in all, HS can be quite confusing and inconsistent with words tbh. But you have to keep paying attention to the card text as well, I think kael'thas is a bit more clear than most ones. However, the combo sounds nice and can still work if evocation gives a 1 cost -> 0 cost card
Yeah, cards that set values to certain numbers take priority. Your Apprentice basically worked, but it reduced the original cost, which Kael set further to 1. It will work this way with all cards that would set a cost to a specific number. Whether it is logical or not.

It's because Kaelthas says (1). Fun idea tho!

Exactly the same logic as Eyebeam Gul'dan as you posted.
