I don't think you should even run that card. The thing is that Magtheridon is only "useful" in the Druid match-up, which is by far the worst one the deck has and it's not like it turns a really bad match-up into a good one or even decent; it turns a bad match-up into a slightly less bad match-up; it won't give you even a decent percentage to make the match-up realistically better (or that much better) to justify running a card that's bad on every other match-up.
Just think about it this way: it's a card that only "good" in one match-up, terrible on the rest and against the one deck that is supposedly good against is only really slightly better than playing another good card.
I've played around 100 games this month with Soul DH. Magtheridon is essentially a tech card against Druids and to some extend Paladins. It is too slow against aggro (Stealth Rogue or Face Hunter) and these matchups are good for DH anyway. You are still not favored to win vs Druid, but I think the inclusion of Mag increases your WR quite significantly. I am facing many Druids at the 3-6k legend ranks so I am happy to run Mag. It is useless against Warrior. They anyway don't play minions that you want to clear and they have 1000 ways of dealing with him. Finally, against Priest, even though they can also deal with him rather easily, it can be a convenient way to clear their board and get rid of some annoying minion without having to hit it with your weapon (for example something big and buffed with Apotheosis). However I've had games where Priest didn't have any removal in hand for Magtheridon or where they had to use something expensive like Soul Mirror to deal with it, both pretty sweet outcomes. Finally in the mirror match it is interesting. If your opponent doesn't run Mag and you play him, it is usually an instant win (12 health is too much to kill it with some Blade Dance usually) if they run Mag and you play it first and they can answer with their own Mag, then it is game over
Mag is a tech card, and unlike ooze, it's redundant here and there, while ooze is at least a tempo play. With that said - if you see druid/pally a lot it's worth it. It's worth the spot in mirror, but if you play it first and they have it too, better make sure you can win (if they're aggro, you don't have time for this). Needless vs mage, which is normally an eaay win, crap vs bomb warrior but useful vs big, rogue you need the removals earlier, hunter is a 67% wr while sleeping. Vs priest you just burst, and, shaman, well, it exists, and you don't need it.
I do run it, when I use it I win, but I don't use it That often. Will win you one of every three games you lose vs druid and pally, the replacents don't do a LOT more, but hell - anything beating those sad 5iq druid decks and pally kids decks is worth the spot.
TLDR - Third the time I feel stickyfingers would be the better tech, another third it wins a lost game, and you win/lose the rest regardless.
I wouldn't mind adding him to my Soul DH deck just because I think he's a pretty cool, powerful effect. However, as everyone has said here, it tends to drag the deck down a bit. You don't need him. Just add some other card generation cards (Wandmaker or Cobalt Spellkin work well).

Can it function without it? What's a good substitute?
I’ve been using Inner Demon myself. It’s unexpected burst/healing if you have the war blades equipped.

It's the worst card in the deck when it's played. The usual consensus is that the deck is stronger without.
Is not part of the deck anymore

As others told you, don't run Mag, unless you want to decrease your win-rate.
“Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.”
Dont lie to the guy! Thats a must have!but useful in judt one deck at the moment..so .. not a worthy craft if u play any other class than DH
I'm not an expert on soul DH, but I believe the consensus is that it makes the deck worse
Certainly an important part of the deck or its winrate
Wrong, card sucks

I think it is not needed in any means. Look through GM decks, you will find decklists without him.
