I have one charge left on my Desert Spear and five mana remaining. I play a 3-cost minion. I attack face, generating a 1/1 rush minion. I play Zephrys, leaving me with 0 mana. My options: Savannah Highmane, Temple Enforcer, and... Inner Rage?
Why was I not offered Backstab? Is there something I could have done differently to guarantee it?
If you wanted to guarantee backstab, you should have hit the 5/4 not face, then hit it with the scarab to bring it’s health down to 2. I’m pretty sure Zeph would have offered you backstab then.
I am so sorry lol. To answer you again, Zephrys became a complete idiot after the Preist remake. Who would ever need a Kul Tiran Chaplain or Temple Enforcer?
I guess it's a decent followup assuming you can clear the board and buff your 5/4 the following turn. But, y'know... there's that pesky poisonous minion in the way. Seems like dealing with that should have been a priority.
I'm sure there's a logical (albeit incorrect) reason this happened. I'm just curious what the rule is so I can avoid it in the future.
I tink you did everything as well as you could have, and you should definitely have gotten Backstab, but... Zephrys isn't always as clever as he pretends to be. Maybe he isn't programmed to see poisonous as a threat? He definitely has a crush on Temple Enforcer, that card gets offered way too often.
There is no way Inner Rage is better for this board state than Backstab. Even if Zephrys completely ignores card text he was adjusted to work with Rush minions correctly. Another day, another Zephrys fail.
My guess here is that there was no way to get backstab through the Zeph algorithm. Thinking about all the times Zeph offers removal, it offers cards that immediately remove opponent's minion(s), as opposed to offering items that remove minions in combination with other things you are able to do after the card it offers is played. So it saw an undamaged 2/3 minion with poisonous, you have zero mana, and can't offer you a card to immediately remove the minion after said card is played. While your play was reasonable, the Zeph algorithm just isn't that "smart".
Now, there are probably other plays that would consistently remove it, such as spend 2 mana (hero power or a card you have), then play Zeph, and with 1 mana remaining, you might have gotten Holy Smite, a card that immediately kills that pesky 2/3 poisonous.

Yeah, I definitely considered the Holy Smite play because I had a nasty feeling I was going to get screwed somehow, but the other play was significantly better tempo given my hand so I rolled the dice. You live and you learn...
I'm wondering, though, if things would have been any different had I not swung the weapon first? Is he more likely to account for the needed 1 damage if there's a weapon swing available rather than a rush minion on board?
Zephrys doesn't know that Desert Spear will make a minion when you attack is my guess. There's certain things he just doesn't see, like fatigue damage. He also almost never gives secret removal anymore, even if you force him to 2 for Flare or 4 for the 5/4 guy.

Nah, I get secret destroyer, twisting nether, death and mass dispell every single time i want it.
I think you should have gone for moonfire. Zephyr doesn't take your attacks in much consideration when looking for removal, it only looks to the opponent boars, so it usually won't offer backstab against a 3 health minion

Here's the situation: It's turn 5.
My board: 5/4 minion with summoning sickness
His board: 2/3 poisonous minion

1/1 rush + 2 damabe backstab is not enough to kill a 5/4 I think?

The 5/4 was mine. He had the 2/3.

Bruh, you want to backstab a damaged minion...

Zephrys is just not as smart as before. I think it is safe to say he became a complete idiot by now.
It's the Quarantine, bro! ;)
I guess in retrospect I should have gone for the SI:7 Agent. Bit of a brainfart.

Zeph is an idiot for sure. I only use it when I need a twisting nether because every other time it sucks.
I think the most amazing part about this thread is that the first 2 comments are from people who can't read.
wtf man..the opponent has a 2/3
