Hey there! First of all, I don't have a big collection since I just returned to the game, but I got Liadrin and was trying to play paladin (I like the class) in any way but murlocs. Of course due to lack of card draw I find the deck pretty weak, but facing so many DH made me realise how expensive consecration is.
It's a 4 cost mana that deals 2 damage to all enemies, if I want to compare it I would put it in between explosive trap and holy nova, now that nova got its cost reduced from 5 to 4... It might be balanced that consec costs 3 mana?
Especially in this aggro meta, you waste a lot of mana on something that might not get you a full board clear and it's hard to combo with libram of justice without getting the cost reduced on your librams. This makes the class feel too slow imo, it's hard to stablish on board this way because the opponent can swarm again next turn and you got no minions at all.
explosive is reactive and nova doesnt hit face no more.
Well, but trap is 2 mana and nova heals your minions, that's why I think 3 mana consec might not be unbalanced. Also, the value you can get from a nova is way higher than 2 dmg face (pala doesn't really have spell power or direct face dmg anyways).
Priest has something similar that costs 3 mana and hits both sides unless you're holding a dragon. It also can't go face. That card sees play. I think consecration at 3 mana would go in every Paladin deck including agro.
The big problem with Consecration is it's the only real removal Paladin actually has. Even two copies of this really doesn't cut it in an aggro deck.
Really, I think Paladin needs more removal tools before we can start talking about giving them "better" ones. Yes, there's equality+pyro, that's a clunky two card combo that other classes don't need to rely on to hit a board.
Apologies for the double but it wouldn't let me edit. I wanted to add- yes, Libram of Justice (and the buff to it) helped, I guess, but absolutely not by enough.
The thing is, Paladins secret Class identity is to have decent cards in the 4 mana slot (thats also why they removed Eqality to 4) unless you play a mindless Murlocmaybeihitmycurveandrollalloveryou aggro deck.
And to ppl asking for "more" or even "better" removal.. cmon guys we just had Enter the Coliseum in 2k15, and because it was so prominent and good the devs are looking for something different, maybe a pure Secret next, or some Beast synergy cards? My prediction is a 4 mana Legendary secret!

You can't compare trap and a spell. Trap's abilities are usually overpowered compared to their mana cost. However, you get to chose when to trigger the trap and that's what justifies the cost. E.g. you have all the time in the world to play around explosive trap: e.g. wait for an oppertunity to buff your minions, wait for the opponent to play minions and make a bunch of trades before trickering the trap, etc.
Holy Nova might give your more value but concecration gives you reach. I have played a ton of Priest and it can be really tough to close out games if the opponents makes a comeback on the board, and in that case I'd rather want to two extra face damage instead of healing my minions.
One of Paladin's class weaknesses is AOE. Consecration should be weaker than priest cards.
Its not specifyed as a weakness per se. They wrote:Weaknesses, Direct damage spells, destroying big minions
Same as Priests strength isnt aoe per definition. I belive there is certainly some wiggle room especially since it looks like they try to push Paladin more into a slower direction lately (Pure , Librams, heal Dragons).

Blizzard's post on class identity was far from exhaustive. If you look at a list of Priest AOE versus Paladin AOE, there is a clear discrepancy between the two. Consecration and Avenging Wrath are the two only direct-damage AOEs in Paladin, and they're both classic. There are other AOEs, such as Shrink Ray, Libram of Justice, and Equality, but they are very much in the theme of Paladin's theme of stat manipulation (and require another card to finish them off). Priest, on the other hand, has at least 15 AOEs, along with other multi-minion removals.

Yes, but these aoes from Priest are only there because Blizzard wants Priest to go into the longer grindy style of games. This has actually nothing to do with class identity. Shaman is also such an example if they want a more slower grindy archetype Shamans get flooded with good aoe. If not.. well then they get Tunnel Trog or other busted tempo cards as happened with Galakrond Shamy.
As i wrote, lately it seems Blizzard wants to push Paladin towards this grindy lategame archetype with Dragons or Librams. Dont get me wrong , i dont expect them to give Pally any aoe anytime soon , but it could happen, this year more then ever. Also they really gave classes way more wiggle room in what they supposed to be. I just remember Hunter and Rogue being the best Control classes (DK or Nzoth), with good healing, or Priest being a good aggro midrange deck.
Eventually Blizzard should decide if they wanna make Pally a pure Token aggro class or a more slower control archetype.(and hopefully HoF all Secrets)
Paladin has healing and statmanipulations . These attributes scream Control. And unfourtunately every Control deck NEEDS good aoe.
Losing to Sire Denathrius makes me not want to play this game anymore. The Sire Denathrius nerf makes me want to play this game again. Losing to Deathrattle Rogue makes me not want to play this game anymore. The Prince Renathal nerf makes me not want to play this game anymore.

At 3 mana it is better than BoTI and that mage potion. No need to buff an already good card.

Paladin needs a buff as a class, one card buffs won't help, it needs to either get a bunch of cards buffed or reworked just like priest.
Consecration is fine, especially considering paladin has cards like Libram of Justice and Equality to combo with it.
