Well, Freeze Mage in Wild might actually start playing this because it becomes a guessing game on how to play around it. 8 armor is fine, but imagine just decimating the opponent's board instead. You will be saving 8 damage without need to always freeze the board.
That new Lackey that gives Health might be better than we thought now, as it can potentially save one of your minions.

Now if they really want to make me happy this set, please for the love of all Hearthstone gods old and new, give us a new ROGUE secret? Pretty please? Only having 3 in their pool is pretty boring.
Overrated. Of the non-secret decks only a highlander deck would run it as there are better options for other mage variants. Don't forget that 1) your opponent can play around it (IE they can let their board get rekt and then refill it, they can play DR minions that want to die,...) and 2) can destroy it with secret hate cards.
As for secret mage: Generally these are tempo decks. They don't want cards like this because by the time you lose your board and they hit your face, you're probably already screwed. Could be Blizzard wants to set up a burn secret mage where you stall the game and go for face damage. Also, no secret cheating cards or secret tutoring means Secret mage will be crap. Maybe there will be more support for this archetype in the rest of the set. I wouldn't be surprised.
Effect is strong but I'm having trouble seeing where this fits into decks. Secret mage has always been an offensive tempo deck - if you cheat this out T3 with Kirin Tor, the opponent isn't gonna be hitting your face for a while since you're going to have the board.. aka tempo mage. If this dealt face damage it'd be played there, but it doesn't and it's easily played around.. hunter runs explosive trap because it also does 2 face damage (and 1 mana cheaper). Defensive secrets outside of ice block kinda suck, and if you're in wild just play volcanic potion instead so you have initiative on when to clear.
Not on the same power level as explosive runes, not even close.

I don't think a tempo deck is the best place to use this, actually. AOE is a control effect, so it probably goes in a control deck.
People always love to shoot down new cards by concocting the absolute worst cases to use them in. It makes more sense to think about how you might alter your strategy to maximize the effect of the card.
For example, why would you care about Kirin Tor value when you are about to blow up opponent's board? Save your Kirin Tor for another secret. Leave your board empty, or maybe hide the secret behind a Taunt that will weaken their board before the secret finishes them off.
In fact, now that I think about it, Flame Ward and Conjured Mirage might work pretty well together...

Yeah, that's the only real weakness I see with this card.
But I suspect they did this to help differentiate this from explosive secret in hunters so people would'nt whine "clone/lazy card design omgz". You know how it goes.

Guys, this only triggers on minions, meaning you can't check with you hero unlike Explosive Trap.

Will do the job against aggro boards for sure, 3 damage can clear most of their minions or stealthed Spirits.
Yea it is the perfect card before you have controll with Doomsayer + Frost Nova or Blizzard. You probably want to replace the Mad Scientist with Ancient Mysteries to have controll when to play it.
I will try that today ... maybe frezze mage will shine again <3
