I think he is just weak outside of heavy draw decks like Mill decks or maybe some kind of Aluneth mage. I dont get why is it that so many people play him in EU?He just dilutes the deck.
He was designed as a fun card for casual players, similar to the first Elise. The only difference was that the first Elise actually saw some higher level play
Not everyone plays to always climb the ladder or be uber competitive. Some people enjoy some of the fun, random aspects of the game.
I have a really low win rate yip deck, incredibly random and needs a fair amount of luck. I may win 1 in 4 or whatever but I still play it here and there because its fun.
Some people need to remember they are just playing a virtual card game. There is absolutely nothing of any kind at stake. Losing doesn't matter.
People at low ranks use him because that is the only way they can sometimes see all those cool legendariea
More like many people at low rank play just for fun but they enjoy the ladder environment. I don't personally use Malchezaar (dusted it a while ago, regretted it ever since) but I play a ton of trash cards, yet I have a nearly full collection. Climbing ladder with bad cards/decks is a very special feeling.
It's just a card for new players who don't have much in their collection, for them to try out some stuff and mess around with the game. Much like Whizbang.
Malchezaar is definitely not for competitive play.

Is that a new card? Never heard of it. Kappa
He's weak period. I only see him in very low rank Wild. Past 15 I have never seen him used.
~Someone who's climbed from 20 to 3 repeatedly in Wild
Trap card for casual players that don't understand value or tempo, or meme card for people who want legendaries they don't own.
Mostly for fun.
It’s fun
OP, the card is weak in Mill Decks, weak in Aluneth Mage. It's just flat out bad.
It is good in Rng mage

I am envoy from nowhere in nowhere. Nobody and nothing have sent me. And though it is impossible I exist. ©Trimutius
Well I wouldnt write him out of decks with strong draws.
Just use baleful banker instead...

He's fun to play, I really dont need much more of a reason than that to play him.

I would. He's bad, again, as everyone here has already said.
Everything that is random is bad but its fun.
