12 points of stats for a pretty easy to attain condition, plus synergizing with FL Jaina. Putting this in a big spell mage might make it actually competitive
I can't recall who coined the phrase, "you have to be a smart guy to be that stupid", but the "linguist" trying to parse his way into believing this card's if/then statement is no longer true at >8 damage definitely calls it to mind.
I didn't watch the stream as I am at work, but I certainly didn't need someone else to tell me that when you've done 9 damage in a game, it is also true that you have done 8 damage in a game. No amount of existentialism changes that fact.
ANYWAYZ . . .
I've been playing BSM since Raza was a meta in-and-of itself. The appropriate comparison is absolutely NOT this vs. Dragoncaller. It is this vs Sindragosa OR Baron Geddon OR Alex OR Lich King. Admittedly, Lich King probably still wins, but I could make a convincing argument for subbing this in for any of the other 3.
Furthermore, even if Odd Mage is not a thing in the upcoming meta, it certainly will have potential after BSM ceases to exist in March of 19.
I, for one, will try both. I've never been a fan of Sindragosa when Psychic Scream is a frequent sight, so that's probably my first cut for ole Janalai.

Enjoying Americans winning in the Olympics is forbidden because it is political. A 14 plus page discussion of state-sponsored lawsuits against a multi-national corporation based on harassment, discrimination, and wrongful death allegations is apparently not political enough to raise an issue.
This looks so OP. It will make Odd Mage really strong. I love the focus on the hero power on the Loa side. I wonder what's in the other side of things (especially since we haven't seen any new spells for Mage yet).
Oh good god is this an awful card. Wording is key here. It says if you hero power did 8 damage this game. Not 8 damage or more. EXACTLY 8 damage. You ping one damage over 8, this shit does nothing. So you draw this late after taking some high value pings and you get a glorious 7 mana 4/4. This isn't Spiteful Summoner. This is Star Aligner. Except you can't break this in Wild either. You trigger this on curve, sure, it's awesome. But anything beyond that is just straight up unplayable, cause you'd have to withhold pings hoping this isn't in your bottom 10 cards and you actually get to use it. In other words, you have to play poorly to make this turd of a card work.
Uh. . . I am not really sure why nobody had pointed this out, but when it was used on stream, they did at least 12 damage with hero power before the first Jan'ali was played. The first from a Spirit empowered ping that did 3. The second was another spirit empowered ping + Flame breather that did 9. So, no, it doesn't work like that.
Also, Star Aligner works like all the other counting cards like quests. It is counting a number of minions on your side of the field. The HP thing means that the counter is only incremented by 7 hp minions. If you have more then 3 minion with 7 hp the effect still triggers.
Blizzard often does not choose exactly descriptive wording for a card's text. The linguist guy is correct: the card says 8, not more or less.
A lot of cards' effects are not fully explained and can only be completely figured out through play. Blizzard does it on purpose in order to make the text shorter.
I'm an amateur linguist, and I am constantly horrified at Blizzard's English text choices, but they know their English-speaking audience: Americans. The localized versions of the cards are usually more complete.

This is not a matter of opinion. You are objectively incorrect.
/begin argument
The card says "If your hero power has dealt 8 damage this game . . . "
The opposite of this statement is "If your hero power has not dealt 8 damage this game . . . "
Both describe a factual state of being. Because they are perfect opposites, one is true or the other is true. There is not a third option.
Consider a game where the hero power has dealt 9 damage:
"Your hero power has dealt 8 damage" or "Your hero power has not dealt 8 damage" is true. Not both.
9 damage is greater than 8 damage. In order to have done 9 damage, you must have done 8 damage.
Therefore, "Your hero power has dealt 8 damage" is a true statement in this game.
/end argument
If you are going to reach a different conclusion, point to the premise that is incorrect please.
The nature of valuation or quantity of numbers includes lesser values, i.e. if you have 9 you must have 8.
If Blizzard wanted a card that required exactly 8 damage done, it would require the qualifier "exactly". The entire reason the word "exactly" exists in the English language is to distinguish the otherwise implied inclusive nature of valuation/quantity.
And I repeat, if you reach a different conclusion, I am dying to know with which premise you find fault.
FUCK!

This is so effin' cool, even if it is purely for the memes. I've tried a fair amount of odd Mage the last couple of xpacs and it just comes up a little bit short (especially post Mana Wyrm nerf). Losing Frost Lich Jaina probably won't help matters as it was a nice alternate win condition against aggro. But hey, maybe it'll continue to get support and find its place in a post-rotation meta where fair midrange is viable.
It gives me another reason to hate the Mage class :)
But to be honest, I am a bit puzzled by the fact they gave us a card that summon a minion which was put out of standard because "too powerful".
It kind of stay in Toki, Time-Tinker's theme (which is a cool idea for me) but Toki is RNG based. Here you will get for sure Ragna. And the fact that it's a battlecry allows some combo with the Youthful Brewmaster or Zola the Gorgon (just realize the "Gorgonzola joke xD) is not a good sign for me.
As a RNG based deck player, I am also not liking the fact that if I get it from RNG during a game and I am not Mage, Hunter or Warlock it's just a 7 mana 4/4.
Tl, dr : 7 mana for a 4/4 + Ragnaros the Firelord (the HP requirement is not that difficult to reach I think), specific to Mage is too annoying for me :)
Instant gold craft day 1 for me. This card can fit in most mage decks, but building around the hero power and throwing in things to copy this guy might be fun.
Amazing design, very comparable to stormshear windcaller except much better. These kinds of 'small quest' cards, where you do something to make something strong, but not instantly game winning happen are a super cool and balanced design, and I really think the game needs more of this.
If Astromancer is good in BSM, and BSM is meta, this should be good in BSM, which will be meta.

The next staple in Baku Mage and a must craft.

I really like this card, but what does ragnaros have to do with the loa??? :P
WELCOME BACK, INSECT!
It's good to see you back in Standard again, old friend, even if it's in this form.
Why HoFed Ragnaros again?

Guys - this is not "exactly 8 damage." Watch the stream, they deal 12 damage and the card is active.

It was already mentioned several times that it's not 8 exactly. It's at least 8 damage but can be more.
There are actually people here believing that you need to deal exactly 8 damage? LOL
Release the Kraken!
guess this shits on all the idiots who thought blizzard hated mage smh
